people really need to understand that this isn't some sort of fight

the foundation isn't doing this out of bad faith. they don't have to have this feedback period. legally, they could screw over the project if they wanted. but they're not, because they want to arrive at a trademark that is enforceable and permissive enough.

a lot of what they've written is standard trademark stuff

You obey a lot of the same rules when you implement any other trademark into your project/website; while I'm not advocating for blindly infringing on trademarks, I think holistically, you have to write it in a manner that also gives you the ability to enforce violations of your trademark policy that are actually legitimate. I'm not saying they'll look the other way on minor trademark violations, but I'm also saying that selective enforcement of trademark laws exists very heavily.

I'm pretty sure having the PyCharm logo on my GitHub profile in the manner I do violates the brand guidelines. I'm not sure I'm going to get a JetBrains phonecall any time soon telling me I didn't obey the modification agreement of their trademark.

oh yeah, that's a good point. they still have a trademark at present, and could technically take any number of people to court for it. this is just an effort to get it into an enforceable, clear policy so that they don't end up losing it.

Trademark laws and branding regulations are rough. When I was a young'un, I wanted to be a graphic designer, and researching branding guidelines for some of the events I was designing for was incredibly time consuming. I'm sure I got it wrong more than a few times. I've also received exactly zero notifications that I made said violations.

🤷‍♂️ Obey the laws when you can, but I'm not sure Rust is coming to take ownership of your project if you goof I guess is what I'm saying.
