The point of the spec is to generate a lock file, which pins deps and sub deps to exact versions that match the spec at the time of locking.

That guarantees that the next person that makes a venv based on your lock file gets the exact same version of deps and sub deps that you did

even if you have "*" for every version req, when you lock it will lock the versions to t he highest version that satisfies all your requirements in the lock file

when someone installs based on that lock file, they will get the exact same versions

The spec is what you change if you need to bump a certain version, then you relock to get all the versions and sub versions that match all your reqs

if your deps are never going to change, then you can just ship the lock file

if they are going to change, then you need to spec to keep track of all the compatible versions of the libs, and then a lock file that locks all the deps and their sub deps to exact versions, so all contributors get consistent venvs

Take for example @royal lake, there are only 39 dependencies listed in the pyproject.toml https://github.com/python-discord/bot/blob/main/pyproject.toml

but when you actually install those, you get 94 deps, thanks to sub deps

if we didn't ship the lock file, the version of those dup deps would be determined at the point on install, and the highest version that meets the spec would be used.

However, since we have a lock file, all those sup deps are locked to specific versions, and are the exact same for everyone installing the bot.
