hey @leaden comet can you quickly explain how much norwegians love skiing in voice chat?
valentine hype everywhere and i hate it
I hate skiing.
yeah
Most of the examples that Oscar Schwartz gives are pessimistically hyperbolic. 1) "the spectacularly abortive One Laptop per Child program". There were actually two rounds of the OLPC, and after pioneering this market, it ended after the rush of EEE-pc's flooded the market with 100$ computers, which was then drowned by the flood of sub 100$ smart phones. 2) "Google engineer’s talk about how driverless cars would make roads smarter and safer in the near future. In fact, seven years after TED 2015, it feels like we are living in a reality that is the exact opposite of the future envisioned that year". This is a ridiculous statement, when now all new cars made in the US come with automatic breaking a standard feature that save thousands of lives every year. 3) "Bolte Taylor’s talk is how she makes cognitive science somehow about self-improvement" I think he entirely missed the point and science behind this talk. Though much of what is said here has been over turned, like our ideas about left and right brain duality. Though, the idea that brain science would change over the course of a decade isn't exactly a revaluation, or a criticism of TED talks in general.
Schwartz makes some valid points about TEDx, but it takes him most of the article to mention it, and he doesn't point out the inherent financial problems behind TEDx. 1) "Twitter had failed to bring democracy to the Middle East." Yup. This is valid, but he doesn't elaborate on this point. 2) Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos, is a good example.
However, the end " the propaganda arm of an ascendant technocracy" is a perfect example of the hyperbolic techno-cynicism that I am critical of Schwartz, who is not himself a person who produces anything. He is a writer and a "poet", not someone who has ever made a product. It is easy to be critical of others when one has no idea how difficult it is to make anything.
SO good

I don't think "spectacularly abortive" is all that hyperbolic. The literal title of the project "one laptop per child" didn't come close to being achieved, there were heaps of valid criticisms and the program never came remotely close to achieving its goal. It did contribute value in that the EE innovations helped bring about things like the Raspberry Pi, but the key thing is that the inspiresting idea really fell flat and much less sensationalist and more low key programs are what actually took a step towards making computing accessible. But the target for OLPC was to charge 100$/pc, which is vastly out of reach for much of the developing world.

Self driving cars are different to driver assists. The closest thing we have to self driving cars is Tesla's "Full-Self Driving", which is no safer than regular cars when properly adjusted to do like for like comparisons. https://engrxiv.org/preprint/view/1973/3986
-
His key point is that the story overshadows the science, the "inspiresting" nature of the content overrides the invitation to critical thought which is key to science, and the only likely outcome is to get people feeling excited and bubbly which isn't actually all that productive. The very fact it's now been overturned highlights that this kind of inspiresting content can lead to people buying into these ideas which are based on science which is still in question
-
I don't disagree with your last part. This article feels to me like it's doing the exact same thing as the "inspiresting" content he's criticising. The main takeaway from the article that I buy into is that Ted is the distillation of this new "insperestational" form of media.
i dont think ill join that topic here in chat, i dont want on a list..

@rugged root - I don't think you're a Group Policy person, but can I throw this one your way?
The group policy from "Mobile Endpoint Management" is from my domain and is correct.
The group policy from "Group Policy" is preexisting and is incorrect.
The device is joined to my domain, and gets its policy from the "Mobile Endpoint Management"
How am I supposed to remove the "Group Policy" ones?
As far as I can tell, if I open the local group policy editor, it just shows all these as "not configured"
Huh
I just didn't realize it was that granular
And for those, it'd have to be in AD I think
You can open the "Local Group Policy Editor" on a Windows 10 (or 11) workstation that is not AD joined to set policy for just that computer.
It's in my AD, in Azure, and my group policy shows up as "Mobile Endpoint Management"
I think these are locally set, because I don't think this computer was domain joined before
But I wasn't able to find them last week.
I couldn't really find exact matches though, maybe they changed the policies with the "Windows 11" update?
But is it a local user?
the ted discussion is better in text, if you're responding do it via
I would have assumed domain joining would have forced out all existing policies

I don't see the relevance.

And soft as clouds
I often kiss you when there's no one else around
I've got your picture, I've got your picture
I'd like a million of you all 'r...
I'll be back.
@quasi condor most of the point of OLPC was to serve an underserved market. Most African countries, at the time, were being ignored by all technology, because the cheapest computer one could buy was around 500$. So the idea was to make portable devices, at the time laptops, less expensive so that children could have access to technology. Cell phones, at the time, even for a flip phone were even more expensive. Much of the reason that OLPC was stopped, because it was being seen to undercut the market that had opened since it's inception. The inexpensive laptop market was seen as a more sustainable way to distribute technology throughout Africa.
There's a lot of value in reading a post-mortem of OLPC and understanding what it did right and what it did (if anything) wrong. But it did not come close to achieving the goal of providing one laptop (or any kind of computing device) per child, it did not come close to providing affordable access to the internet to almost anyone in Africa. It set out with these huge (and laudable) goals, and it fell miles short. That's not to say it did no good, it almost certainly paved the way for other cool new things, but I "spectacularly abortive" isn't really hyperbole when it can't be said to have even come close to achieving what its founders set out to do
OLPC

I have 3 variables as results in a function, each time i run the function I want to pack those 3 variables into a dict.. the 1st var is a counter so it changes, i want to use it for the main key.. then add the other 2 vars.. for each iteration of the function to add to the dict... so it looks like.

Spotify’s only issue is their web app
👍
I never used the web app? I always just use the desktop app for better or worse
According to the Wikipedia, the primary language behind Spotify development is Python. Among other significant languages used are Java, C++, and C. It is compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, Linux, and macOS.
Read more at: https://www.freelancinggig.com/blog/2018/06/20/what-programming-language-is-spotify-written-in/
Desktop Component – The desktop component has been written in C++ for most of the part, and that is why C++ has been mentioned in the documentation. Along with C++, JavaScript is also used for some of the web related components. For the Mac OS X users, Objective-C and even Objective-C++ have been used. The use of JavaScript for the native desktop app has been surprising to many. But Spotify uses Chromium embedded framework due to which the web components had to be developed in JavaScript for flexibility and scalability. Currently, Spotify does not allow third-party plugins which were previously there. This has more to do with the security purposes, and Spotify has bought a few plugins that were popular and embedded them directly into the platform.

I love working from home but idk, I feel like I need some energy of people around me from time to time and try to bring my laptop somewhere else for a while
And I feel kinda silly doing it since I have a nice office setup that I'd rather just unplug from my monitors/peripherals and go somewhere else 🤦

Someone hit me with that skating emote! Forgot what it was called 😔
Lies
Got some main villian vibes right there
Sexy main villain 🤤
I believe they made an anime inspired by this guy
I feel like he could be a male ursula in a broadway adaptation or something
Oop, lol didn't read that caption 🤷
hajaa im going to get you a date with that dude
you deserve it
https://youtu.be/9FO3RIyd9i4 ok based on a lot of figure skaters
This is the trailers for the special documentary comparing Yuri on Ice anime scenes vs Real Life figure skaters stories and the skating performances. We know that this topic could be controversial as some figure skating fans don't like people to compare the real person to the anime. However, after watching Yuri on Ice, we can be sure that the pr...
Hahaa that could work
Oh I wanna try one of those too
@rugged tundra your ass is crazy
im starting to think your playing with me
thats like asking
what is star wars
dude youre not
I feel like the silence would be deafening tho. I always need something in the background. Lofi all day errday
youre in a financial instiution
youve been to college
and graduated
at this point your. a fully grown man
a red blooded american
and you dont know what point break is
you need to chill
take some time off
Yes.

✅ @pallid hazel can now stream until <t:1644334545:f>.
could you tell me what is wrong with this code?
why can't I get the expected output?
😆
what is this for?
this is an exercise in sololearn.com
this has something to do with positions and indexes
and your printing line 0
at the first position
and its a string type
with len(line)))
im trying to print every lines first character with the length of that line
which ive used before but forget what it does
from ast import literal_eval
!e
from ast import literal_eval
spam = "{'ham': 3, 'pork': 7}"
print(repr(spam))
eggs = literal_eval(spam)
print(repr(eggs))
There we go
@rugged root :white_check_mark: Your eval job has completed with return code 0.
001 | "{'ham': 3, 'pork': 7}"
002 | {'ham': 3, 'pork': 7}
so why is it throwing an error do you think
is it a problem with what youre using/the challenge?
or for sure not?
cause all i see is your output is the exact same as the expected output
just 1 number higher...
whats the big deal?
Can you show your code? Ideally copy pasting it using Discord's code block formatting
!code
Here's how to format Python code on Discord:
```py
print('Hello world!')
```
These are backticks, not quotes. Check this out if you can't find the backtick key.
Welcome and congrats!
thats for you to figure out
use visual studio if youre just starting
Ok thanks
Found it
I'm most familiar with vscode too but they all have they're pros and cons, just gotta play around with em and find what works best for you. You can use notebooks like jupyter in vscode tooe
if you read the last sentence of the second picture you will understand the issue
Ohk Thanks
ok i got you
so specifically the yellow box
because 4 of your output characters are right
and the letter the book starts with is correct
so its that n thing
If you click on the "click here to see details", it takes you to one specific CVE
If you go to the "Log4j" page, you can see that it's actually two other CVEs
Still have to go the device page, open the "Update Log4j" recommendation, and switch to the "Vulnerable files" tab to actually see the file path
you need to satisfy the other cases
the other 3 lines
except for the last one
CLI? O CLR?
youve only accounted for the last line
llvm clang
Can you patch my Log4j CVEs while you're at it?
Yeah
It's FedEx's shipping software
They still haven't released a patch for it
Yep
c:\program files (x86)\fedex\shipmanager\bin\offlinefastservicepublisher_lib\log4j-core-2.16.0.jar
Just checked for updates this morning, and it said there were done avaiable
Vector<int> myList = {1, 2, 3, 5};
for (auto const x : myList) {
std::cout << x << "\n";
}
I wish I could do that
We have a custom integration from a vendor that was last updated in 2003
Both the FedEx tech and the tech at the vendor that built the integration aren't there anymore
The computer died last year, and it took a team of about 30 people from us, the vendor, and FedEx to reverse engineer the integration to get it working again

By the way - Did you know that FedEx uses VBA for enterprise integrations?
cya mates 👋 i gtg sleep
👋
What integration options does FedEx online have?
Or does your team just hand type in all the addresses?
Rust is nice
GitHub actions automatically building my exe(s) is great
Soo much easier than Python

Did you say you want to put in your infractions?
please read our #rules and #code-of-conduct
What's your biggest spreadsheet?
Barely
I'm needing to add more
But it can't take it
I built a recursive function that takes a table name and downloads all the records and saves them in SQLITE
view model =
div []
[ button [ onClick Decrement ] [ text "-" ]
, div [] [ text (String.fromInt model) ]
, button [ onClick Increment ] [ text "+" ]
]
import Browser
import Html exposing (Html, button, div, text)
import Html.Events exposing (onClick)
-- MAIN
main =
Browser.sandbox { init = init, update = update, view = view }
-- MODEL
type alias Model = Int
init : Model
init =
0
-- UPDATE
type Msg = Increment | Decrement
update : Msg -> Model -> Model
update msg model =
case msg of
Increment ->
model + 1
Decrement ->
model - 1
-- VIEW
view : Model -> Html Msg
view model =
div []
[ button [ onClick Decrement ] [ text "-" ]
, div [] [ text (String.fromInt model) ]
, button [ onClick Increment ] [ text "+" ]
]
All it does is match reference columns across the tables to find a specific reference without having to click all the way through the system
I feel like Pandas could do that a lot faster
❓
That's... interesting to read
So... Are these equivalent?
view : Model -> Html Msg
view model =
[...]
def view(model: Model) -> Html Msg:
...
😕
Reason lets you write simple, fast and quality type safe code while leveraging both the JavaScript & OCaml ecosystems.
Elm is written in Haskel?
Isn't... Elixir written in Erlang?
Whatever happened to writing languages in C?
With what?
with my code🥲
Show us your code, and we can take a look
sure. wait
This looks like Ruby and KQL had a baby
Because apparently SQL isn't good enough for searching SQL databases?
@rugged tundra use the terminal
make a few scripts
use vim
its so cool
people dont like it, but its one of my favorite things
so facebook is out of eu
my code already worked. thanks for replying earlier. @sweet lodge
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Haskell, is in fact, Haskell/Unemployment, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Haskell plus unemployment. Haskell is not a lifestyle unto itself, but rather another component of a fully dysfunctional way of life, kept useless by the welfare state, unemployment benefits and undesired skills comprising a full NEET as defined by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
class Game {
// Haxe applications have a static entry point called main
static function main() {
// Anonymous structures.
var playerA = { name: Simon, move: Paper } // Just assume that the two names are strings
var playerB = { name: Nicolas, move: Rock }
// Array pattern matching. A switch can return a value.
var result = switch [playerA.move, playerB.move] {
case [Rock, Scissors] |
[Paper, Rock] |
[Scissors, Paper]: Winner(playerA);
case [Rock, Paper] |
[Paper, Scissors] |
[Scissors, Rock]: Winner(playerB);
case _: Draw;
}
// Paper vs Rock, who wins?
trace(result: $result); // The argument itself is a string
}
}
// Allow anonymous structure named as type.
typedef Player = { name: String, move: Move }
// Define multiple enum values.
enum Move { Rock; Paper; Scissors; }
// Enums in Haxe are algebraic data type (ADT), so they can hold data.
enum Result {
Winner(player:Player);
Draw;

private uint year = 0;

public HelloWorld.with_year (int year) {

can i help someone? i am bored
I've always thought that INTERCAL is best described as a dominatrix, because the code reads as if you are pleading.

It's only given out temporarily by mods upon request

git only has the one branch

Like competing static type checkers operating at the coarse-grained application level via ad-hoc heuristic type inference (e.g., Pyre, mypy, pyright, pytype), beartype effectively imposes no runtime overhead. Unlike static type checkers:

We just started setting up this new fancy Microsoft security stuffs, and it's flagging on everything
Investigate this user because they connected to a new ISP: Microsoft
Investigate this user because they connected to a new service: OneDrive
Investigate this user because they connected from a new browser: Edge
the client was using JS
obtain(url)
there's no GET() in the MDN last I checked
Microsoft is an ISP?
oh, verizon. that explains a lot
The fact that it is flagging Windows as a risk makes me smile
First time user connected from planet: Earth.
Taking bets: will you be required to set it up so every time it flags anything it creates a ticket in ServiceNow?
Planet Unknown: Flagging Planet
Or whatever you're using for that
Oh, we get an alert every time someone misspells the name of the company in their headers
pisses me off
Mostly because it happens so often it is impossible to see the actual alerts
"Investigate this user because they are not connected."
Put that shit in Kibana instead lol
I do get these
With what budget?
damn that UI is looking clean, I much prefer that to ServiceNow
