# whole bear wdym bridge-selling business?

I find NFTs to be a bit like the trading of imaginary things, which feels like it should fall under the heading of creative and alternative commerce wink wink. It reminds me of the classic confidence pitch of "Hey, do I ever have a bridge to sell you!" Where the person doesn't own the bridge, isn't authorised to sell it and it's a public way, so you couldn't control it, so what are you really buying? I'm sure there's some okay applications for the technology, itself. It's just what a lot of people are using it for seems a bit...empty.

For one thing, someone should point out to Tolkien that in 'series' novels of this type, readers get to enjoy a particular cast of characters, and want to read more of their adventures. Those who enjoyed Bilbo Baggins in the first book will be disappointed early on: the titular hero of The Hobbit disappears out of the story about half-way through the first chapter, and while he does make the occasional appearance thereafter, he is in no way the hero of this one. Nor are any of his dwarf companions from The Hobbit much in evidence: Gloin does make a brief appearance, but also not for long, and in any case Gloin was never a particularly interesting character in the first novel (where the adventure party consisted of altogether too many dwarves, most of whom were indistinguishable from one another).

The exact definition of a roguelike game remains a point of debate in the video game community. A "Berlin Interpretation" drafted in 2008 defined a number of high- and low-value factors that distinguished the "pure" roguelike games Rogue, NetHack and Angband from edge cases like Diablo

@rugged root my pc now appears to be completely dead. With my 3080, a 970, or no gpu at all, when I power it on the fans spin up for a second then stop. The RGB on the ram etc stays lit up though, and the GPU fans will spin at full speed.

This is almost certainly a mobo or psu problem now right? If so, what are my options, do I just have to test with an alternative mobo/psu? I've tried replugging and reseating everything to no avail.

somber heath
#

"But it worked before! Look, it's powering things and everything! It's just not working it must be x it must be y, anything but the power supply!"

#

Replace the power supply.

#

"Oh, it works, now. Must have been that."

pallid hazel
#

what you mean a 970? a gtx 970?

#

probably.. and your only putting 1 in at a time? .. best thing since you been in the case, make sure all connections are tight on the cables.. start there.. and do you have an led bios debug light.. like it shows codes?

quasi condor
#

no debug thing on the mobo, no. And yeah, tried w/970, w/3080, and w/no-gpu - all get the same result. I just tested a different PSU as well which hasn't worked. I have another mobo, but it's like half a days work to extricate it from the PC it's in, but that's my next step

pallid hazel
#

try to reset your bios i guess, usually a jumper on 2 pins.. if your steady enough you can use a small screwdriver

#

does your mobo have a vid out, and does your cpu have a vidchip in it?

quasi condor
#

cpu doesn't have integrated graphics, no

#

it would be much easier if it did

#

I'm just going to try the stupid other motherboard - I know it works, and it's not like I use this PC for anything

pallid hazel
#

hope you dont have one of those recalled psus that kills pcs.. gigabyte or something i think

#

i would check tho, since i dont know what you have

#

reseat the ram, also did anything come uplugged while your were working on it? .. like the case header pins..? .. those usually can easily be slipped off...

#

do you have more then 1 pcie slot? .. after resetting your bios you should be able to use either.. if your bios had the option to lock the vid to one and you did it, that is.. or try now

#

and send a case pic.. so we can see what your working with

quasi condor
#

there's the case, presumably dead mobo, and PSU

#

I'm going to check that the PSU isn't a murderer before letting it near the definitely working mobo

Nothing I said implied that it was an absolute thing - sometimes you just need to hire a dev because if you don't your headcount allocation gets reduced for the next 10 years, in that case it's whatever - but what I am saying is that the cost of interviewing more people and of getting more people in the door is linear as far as I can see, and the potential returns are also linear. If the metric you use to hire by (doesn't need to be a number, can be completely qualitative) is reasonably well correlated with the quality of hires, then the size of the pool is a dominating factor in a world where the Pareto 80/20 rule holds true, purely because the quality of eventual employees is roughly lognormal

business potential returns are not linear. At my $lastcompany, we had a overnight data crunching process that took 4 hours to run. Some developer came in made it 2x faster so it took 2 hours to run so it could be run with later data.
