@graceful grail once you connect to other servers, you can chat with people that have those as their homeserver, but you can cut that connection anytime without locking you out of your homeserver. the connection between your homeserver and other peoples homeservers only determines whether you can chat with them. not your login, or the messages you sent on your own server, only your communications with people from that server (which has to happen since their messages are on that server).
nothing prevents you from cutting off your server from the network, or making your own network.
