Can a sovereign parliament transfer their sovereignty to an individual? because they have the 'right', but at the same time if sovereignty originates from the parliament, does that mean they don't have the ability to transfer sovereignty?

#

lords have no power

#

I could have sworn that house of commons could by pass the house of lords.

#

Is there an emergency power's law? Thats the sterotypical way to quickly create an autocracy

#

Thats one way to mess up the government

Can't understand when he is going on and on and on

I just read act 1

#
BASSANIO
In my school-days, when I had lost one shaft,
I shot his fellow of the self-same flight
The self-same way with more advised watch,
To find the other forth, and by adventuring both
I oft found both: I urge this childhood proof,
Because what follows is pure innocence.
I owe you much, and, like a wilful youth,
That which I owe is lost; but if you please
To shoot another arrow that self way
Which you did shoot the first, I do not doubt,
As I will watch the aim, or to find both
Or bring your latter hazard back again
And thankfully rest debtor for the first.
#

^ that is gonna take a couple more reads to understand

#

Hes asking for money from antonio. I just can't really understand it all

#

Im pretty sure he is saying antonio secured a line of credit for him. and he went and wasted it (hes broke). and now he needs more. And he's asking without any sin with it

#

or something like that

#

I dunno. The more I read it the more I understand it, but its gonna take a lot of reads. and then I will be talking and thinking in shakespeare, which will be fun (not really)

#

thanks for taking a crack at it

#

thats fun

Ohh ok

whole bear
#

I can't believe

#

I've used the mdbook

#

and i've forget about it

#

I'm dumb

vocal basin
#

spotting mdbook be used randomly for non-Rust stuff is fun

#

GitBook only recently added dark theme iirc

#

wait no

#

and that one uses gitbook

#

but it doesn't have a dark theme

#

confusion

#

ah, no

#

it does

#

just non-trivial to find

#

oaky, so, yes, now GitBook does have a dark theme

#

and mdbook had it for a very long time

#

and defaults to it properly

#

okay now I'm ever more confused:
why does GitBook themes have different fonts

#

presumably for readability?

whole bear
#

I careless about why

#

I care about more

#

as long as it has more

#

it all matters to me

vocal basin
whole bear
#

I think it has to do with fall back

#

having more fonts and theme

vocal basin
#

and with

whole bear
whole bear
vocal basin
#

that's why I think it's just because of readability concerns

whole bear
#

readability is main reason

vocal basin
vocal basin
#

with the equivalent in the standard library being added in 2019

whole bear
#

Can it be used in latest version of rust?

#

I'm curious to know

#

I suppose it should work without any problem

vocal basin
#

yeah, most of the crates are usable even after a decade

#

there are very few breaking changes

whole bear
#

Hmm

vocal basin
#

the most significant in recent years was when time broke

#

because Box<str> got a second FromIterator implementation

whole bear
#

So It was for convenience

vocal basin
#

ideally, void::Void could turn into being just an alias for std::convert::Infallible

#

however

#

there are some consequences of those being different types

#

so the trick, that's planned for Infallible and ! can't be done

vocal basin
#

(if those were turned into the same type)

#

T and E there should've been associated types not generic type arguments

whole bear
#

I wasn't expecting so much info about it

vocal basin
#

I wish Python had associated types

whole bear
#

you have complete knowledge of situation

whole bear
vocal basin
#

something like this

class Iterator(Protocol):
    Item: type

    def __next__(self) -> Self.Item: ...
    def __iter__(self) -> Self: ...
#

compared to what we have now

class Iterator[Item](Protocol):
    def __next__(self) -> Item: ...
    def __iter__(self) -> Self: ...
whole bear
#

Uh

vocal basin
#

actually, I guess, for Python, the second option makes more sense

whole bear
#

Why do python lack associated types?

#

There must be reason for not having it!

lavish gazelle
vocal basin
#

in Python it's more normal to say that I is an iterator that yields A and also an iterator that yields B

vocal basin
lavish gazelle
vocal basin
#

yeah, unrelated to whether variables have types

lavish gazelle
#

I would still argue it is

vocal basin
#

associated types, just like generics, are expected to exist only within the scope of the type system model

#

shouldn't get too real most of the time

vocal basin
whole bear
# vocal basin I think this

Everything in python is object at runtime, so saying Item:type could be interpreted as both runtime class attribute and compile time member?

vocal basin
#

they're annotated more explicitly

vocal basin
#

keyword might

lavish gazelle
#

ah I get you now — you’re saying associated types (like Item in Rust’s Iterator) only really exist inside the type system model, while in Python the runtime doesn’t even care. so in Python land we just say “this iterator yields A or B” and leave it at that, because duck typing takes over. makes sense 👍

whole bear
#

I'm yet to learn python

vocal basin
#

I've implemented approaches similar to associated types (literally having a type you can pull out of a class or an instance) before

lavish gazelle
#

What will be your use case?

vocal basin
#

certain things related to how Pydantic behaves

lavish gazelle
#

Hmmmm

vocal basin
#

Pydantic supports generics in quite a weird way

lavish gazelle
#

Still solves the problem

#

Better than a vibz lang like JS

vocal basin
#

TypeScript's type model is excessively powerful

#

I believe you can, for example, have most of the JSON Schema spec covered by it

lavish gazelle
vocal basin
vocal basin
#

there are a few runtime TS features which aren't present in JS

#

general advice is to avoid them

lavish gazelle
vocal basin
#

those features

#

e.g. enums

whole bear
#

epy

#

bye

vocal basin
#

this is kind of thing that one can't get without associated types easily:

type ItemOf[T: Iterator[Item]] = Item
lavish gazelle
vocal basin
#

enums are just aliases

lavish gazelle
#

No i meant compiling into javascript the result code

#

Cuz browsers can't run ts

vocal basin
#

enums just get inlined

#

as is, as values

vocal basin
lavish gazelle
#

Lemme check quickly

vocal basin
#

you might be confusing those with weird constructors and decorators and whatever

#
enum Direction {
  Up = 1,
  Down,
  Left,
  Right,
}

this just gets inlined as 1,2,3,4 in code

#

Enums allow a developer to define a set of named constants.

lavish gazelle
#

I did see someone showing the end results of the code of enums

vocal basin
#

they likely get minified if they're strings

#

so you get _mQ1 or whatever instead of "this is third enum variant with an excessively long name"

lavish gazelle
#

Give me a sec to compile a ts

vocal basin
#

it didn't like me using : ItemOf[Test] directly

#

but seems to work fine this way

#

I'm surprised pylance understands it

lavish gazelle
#

This is what I am talking about:

#

After compile ts:

enum Direction {
  Up = "UP",
  Down = "DOWN",
  Left = "LEFT",
  Right = "RIGHT"
}

console.log(Direction.Up);
#

I got:

var Direction;
(function (Direction) {
    Direction["Up"] = "UP";
    Direction["Down"] = "DOWN";
    Direction["Left"] = "LEFT";
    Direction["Right"] = "RIGHT";
})(Direction || (Direction = {}));
console.log(Direction.Up);
vocal basin
#

ah

#

so no inlining

#

unfortunate

lavish gazelle
lavish gazelle
vocal basin
#

that might be why

lavish gazelle
#

Lemme set the target then

vocal basin
#

tsc might be defaulting to that

#

many projects still pretend to support es5

lavish gazelle
#

Same shit:

lavish gazelle
vocal basin
#

then just for consistency/simpler implementation ig

lavish gazelle
#

it took C 50 years to get 0b syntax for integer literals

🤣 🤣 🤣

#

I like C tho

vocal basin
#

modern C++ can compile most of C but that tends to produce different results

#

because C++ provides less direct control

#

and gives more options to the compiler

#

(C++ has more UB)

lavish gazelle

I have never used C++

#

I might wanna use it for gaming or just use bevy with rust

I won't use it until C++26 is stable enough

Top tier prop

calm ibex
#

so i’m new at programming and i wanna know how to use visual studio code

vocal basin
#

one of the most important commands to know:
"Python: Select Interpreter"

#

if Python behaves as if packages and whatever else is missing

#

(just a thing to remember when stuff explodes)

calm ibex
#

I was using pycharm

#

but I wanna change to visual studio code

vocal basin
calm ibex
#

done

vocal basin
#

with uv for managing venvs

#

uv is a tool built on top of pip and venv which simplifies some things

#
uv init
uv add numpy
uv run main.py
calm ibex
#

so I want to begin write codes

vocal basin
#

is your project going to have dependencies on existing python packages?

#

(which would normally be installed via pip)

vocal basin
calm ibex
#

i just wanna to make a simple calc

#

Hello

vocal basin
#

for now just create an empty directory for your code and open it in VSCode

calm ibex
vocal basin
#

create a directory using your system's file explorer

calm ibex
#

I am stick at this

vocal basin
calm ibex
vocal basin
#

I don't think your should be opening that directory

#

you opened where VSCode is installed;
you need to open the directory of your project instead

calm ibex
#

ty

#

like this right ?

vocal basin
calm ibex
vocal basin
#

click Open Folder again, then navigate to your project

#

open your project's directory instead of the first thing it shows

vocal basin
#

now you can create a file by double clicking in this area

#

e.g. main.py

calm ibex
#

ty

#

how can I run the programme rn

vocal basin
#

press ctrl+` (backtick; key to the left of 1, also has ~ on it)

#

then run py main.py in the integrated terminal

vocal basin
vocal basin
#

though might depend on your keyboard layout

calm ibex
vocal basin
#

py main.py, then enter

vocal basin
# calm ibex

you need to rename the file to something runnable

#

for example, main.py

calm ibex
#

ig Pycharm is way easier than this

vocal basin
#

try to avoid using spaces in file names

#

PyCharm won't allow you to run non-Python files either

calm ibex
vocal basin
#

it doesn't, it just automatically adds .py

#

(when creating the file)

#

click the file, then either right click it and find rename in the context menu or press F2

#

the file name must be snake_case or lowercase with no spaces ending with .py

#

after that you need to run py <whatever the file name is> in the terminal within VSCode

calm ibex
#

wait wait

vocal basin
#

have you renamed the file?

calm ibex
#

yh

vocal basin
#

it must be simple_calc_ig.py

calm ibex
#

oh ok

vocal basin
#

lowercase s and .py extension

calm ibex
#

done

vocal basin
#

after renaming,
ctrl+` to focus the terminal
then run py simple_calc_ig.py in the terminal

vocal basin
#

no, don't use the run button

calm ibex
vocal basin
#

clear the terminal input and type exactly py simple_calc_ig.py into it, then press enter

calm ibex
#

so to run any code I must do this Every time ??

vocal basin
#

now that your know how the right way to run code looks like,
you may try clicking this button

hexed trout
#

neat

vocal basin
#

so I'm showing you the more reliable way in case stuff with the run button doesn't work

vocal basin
vocal basin
#

or enable auto-save like in PyCharm

calm ibex
vocal basin
#

it already saved for you when you ran the file

vocal basin
#

which idk if works at all

#

but seems to run

calm ibex
#

I can’t remove this it’s that last thing when I run the code

vocal basin
#

it just goes back to the terminal after running

calm ibex
vocal basin
vocal basin
#
$ command
output
# here, the output is finished
$ another command
...
vocal basin
#

IntelliJ family of IDEs treat program output way too separately from regular terminal output

#

including PyCharm

#

which is why, for example, ANSI escape sequences don't work there by default

#

whereas VSCode runs your program mostly as is

calm ibex
#

if I want to run with these two

vocal basin
#

I can't currently check the first one there; seems like because I'm using a remote server for running it

#

(presumably that one has something to do with actual windows)

timid quartz
#

calm ibex
#

Hey I wanna unistall python and reinstall it

the other one is made with python. Made it look as realistic as possible

works to what extent?

turbid harness

very similar but not quite there. I implemented some of the default command

vocal basin

does $(...) syntax work?

turbid harness
#

Not sure I added that. Imma upload it to github in a bit so you can test it yourself

#

Right now it only works on linux beacuse of one import

vocal basin
#

btw sudo is a separately installable package on Linux

#

not a basic shell thing

turbid harness
#

On ubuntu 25.04 it came by default

primal shadow
#

It generally comes with Ubuntu

vocal basin
#

on minimal ubuntu installation with "login as root" enabled it might be missing

#

it is missing on Debian default installation

#

because that has "login as root" enabled by default

#

with a separate password between root and non-root user

turbid harness
#

Oh ok

vocal basin
#

sudo is a surprisingly non-default thing despite how people view it as inherent to Linux

#

Alpine doesn't have proper sudo

#

only sudo as an alias to doas

, which is a package
