chess has way younger "peak skill" age compared to proper programming
@somber heath It must be hard?
How do you know?
as for sports programming, yeah, that's been similar for a while
Come join VC
peak is like 20 -> 30 year old
peak for programming is 40~50
Nah
Programming has no peak
and also english is not my main language so dont be rude with my my grammar
There are literally walking dead coder making stuff
after 40~50 memory issues start being a problem, though that depends on a specific person
Were we rude?
no
Nah I don't think so.
As barbara is an example that age couldn't be factor!
Who is Barbara?
She become successful in her 50s or 60s
Liskov
Shark Tank
, would be the guess
yeah, for some people memory doesn't degrading that much, then, yeah, skill accumulation lasts for longer
(in any case my point was that there is no early peak)
I wonder if she got called grasshopper.
((as commonly is with chess/sports in general))
Yeah
It's all about lifestyle and genetics
is there any git repo i could maintain cus there is nothing to do
you should probably be contributing to a repo, not maintaining it, if you're just looking for things to do
Opal why not try making ur own lang using python?
assuming that's someone else's repo
You're advanced programmer I think so
or just that
Dude what do you find interesting?
You can make Online Course.
There's fella named Bruno Simon, he made around 3 million just from online course!
one of the few reasons why innovation in programming is related to youth is because for some older people it's difficult to let go of what they believe;
i.e. lack of knowledge can help in solving something deemed impossible
@quartz beacon Hello
Your friend is you!
You love yourself
Hello Mindful dev
Galactus ur the kid?
i am bad with explaining
Where's ur youtube channel @whole bear ?
It's was for Opal
He is good at it
ahh
bruh
If Bruno Simon has sold his course to around 25000+ students at 90 USD each.
That mean he have USD 2,250,000 from the course alone.
Insane!
Imagine a course can make you rich!
Damn!
I don't remember who said that, but there was a quote about how for certain changes to happen the older generation needs to just die out/retire
- taxes
Nope
just trolling rn
I have taken taxes out
dont mind me
total was 100 USD
or something
So I took 90 as actual amount in pocket
-- welcome to the seminar on how to earn $1'000'000 in only a few minutes. what was the price for the ticket?
-- $1'000
-- how many seats are there?
-- 1000
-- and this is how you earn $1'000'000, seminar over
I don't even know what the modern grifters call their talks
when it's web, it's webinar
Because there's private discord which is only accessible to paid user or student, and user count was 26 thousand or more
in-brain t9 not functioning
I'd like to recommend you a soviet era movie
I liked it
Movie's name is "Of Freaks and Man"
@whole bear What's wrong dude?
I can hear you!
it's post-soviet
@whole bear -> @chilly wolf
yeah, Balabanov is a famous director
Really?
thanks
1998
well, I don't want to make my youtube channel famous
Hmm, so you had watched it?
not yet
@quartz beacon I use unity it's much better org compared to Alphabet
Oh, so do you have any intention to watch that movie?
Alphabet is not as open and direct about their questionable practices
Who cares about the transparency?
When ur using it for free it's expected
I like unity over google
because google admob is much worser compared to unity ad
there were very specific concerns for not using unity, iirc
I use unity ad
licensing stuff
But unity works well in most case!
until they sue you
Why would they sue me?
to get that money
I'm just poor boy no body knows me!
if you don't pay the fee
even if your game was published before the policy change
They take their commission, from the revenue, so it's never a issue for me!
from the revenue
no
that's the issue
it's per-install
Nah I use unity ad for my apps
@quartz beacon Why do you like arab?
I mean you do like to talk about arab and egypt
You did long ago when you where talking with Hemlock
Jikky do you know arabic ?
hayyyi guys :L
I know french, english, arabic
are you Lebanese?
You ain't 14 ur 80 year old in 14 year old boy
Farsi.
Who?
yahya
why
He speaks french and arabic
Lebanese people speak all 3 languages he listed
if you dont believe me, when i will go in voc when i will get voc verif and talk in those langs
so most likely north african
very very close
oh, nice
I knew it!
Glad to hear that!
Did you hear about the North African mermaid? ||They were from Algaeria.||
no
That's good one 😂
@whole bear 👋
Russia ain't bad
🧜
@quartz beacon non-trivial
Hello, I'm just going to listen to the conversations, I didn't come here to talk
As long as she can make good earning
algae are weird;
like, many of them are neither plants nor animals nor bacteria
difficult to leave legally
@quartz beacon Dude why are you talking to yourself, it kind of feels like that
?
I was about to reply with ? too lol
I mean, no one speaks as actively as you in voice
She is from where?
for me it's 3 pm
@quartz beacon Actually, I want to talk too. My accent is terrible but I know how to speak English
why not
download it
Speak english
It feel like I'm speaking Spanish when I speak English
no it's cus there is nothing to do
Dude, please speak english, I would hear you all day long!
@quartz beacon You are so funny lol
yes
You can't give up ur nationality?
Damn!
It's like prison
@somber heath Your voice is like the voice of an experienced wizard
Russia has a list of "extremist" books, distribution of which is limited
it's not in my country
My friend, leave these issues behind, go and relax with a cup of tea lol
Same here, it's not just limited to russia!
it's just for trolling reasons to scare ppl
You can leave your country but ur country won't take you back!
and also i dont know german
@rough silo 👋
and also i now that hitler i f**** monster
Swastika is normal here, even the nazi swastika as some Indian find it symbolic!
Jikky, try saying these words "Salam qaqa necesen", you will feel like you are a real expert in the language.
context matters for symbols
☮️
@quartz beacon why not
i will not support hitler
his ideology is stupid
let's change topics
no soup is more of a culunary art
🕊️
I do not appreciate these people talking about this at this time, everything is behind us, anyway, when you talk about this topic, Discord suspends your account, I tried it once
sus
why everyone is silent
No problem
Nah I don't think so
thats the name of god, dont be saying that
Which god?
He is muslim!
Yahya is a name prophet
no
cause i know Moroccan youtuber named Yahiamice
was curious, since you're also moroccan and use this word
Yohan
i thought people would be talking about python here..
i dont agree with your view
voice channels are off-topic
or Γιάννης*
How many charaters are in "PYTHON" ?
are what we talk about
Why "PYTHON" ?
i mean its not an opinion, its a fact in history
Does real life Python has any law suit on "Python" ?
@quartz beacon and also when joining the channel with them already in it
im always off-topic, sooooooooo even when on-topic
translations are a thing, the origin is Γιάννης
It's not that bad
realpython or Real-World Python?
Do Python (Anaconda) and standard Python inherently agree to be slow in real-world applications?
Yes, there is serious collusion
requirements.txt
no like web site with a research thingy for mods
NixOS as a management system for minecraft mods
Do anaconada fart?

@rugged root and the other Hemlock

Does hemlock owns python?
the portal gun would be pretty swell
Could I also make it let me pick the ammo?
So I could unlimited shoot my golden bulletS?
and buy houses
or countries
Do cats eat kitten?
sometimes
if their newborn changes odor then yes
How about dog?
idk
How about humans?
@quartz beacon Good to know!
Ram mandir
We are always watching
This is an example
It was mosque
and before mosque it was temple
is there any git repo i can contribute
@peak depot depends on whether there is official rating
tetris effect is all ages, for example
@amber raptor yeah, opposite of hidden in library
if you need to hide everything, you need to hide and make it private
last time I played anything PvP on Steam was in September
(CS2)
and before that OpenTTD in March last year
seems like literally only those two games
in 2024
@wind raptor webhook one into the other
2023: duck game (because developing a mod), battlebit (rip), tabletop simulator (we only played uno), fps chess (crypto miner)
I tried JetBrains dev containers
I did not like it
@amber raptor you can probably just return it as a file
it should mimetype it properly
(FileResponse)
I write code so perfect that compilers thank me. Bugs fix themselves out of respect. Google searches me for answers. My algorithms run in O(0) time. Stack Overflow had to ban me for being too powerful. I don’t just program—I redefine computing itself.
Ok Chuck Norris
these bars though
@wind raptorDo people in here know how to create google extensions?
that would be mostly JS-/HTML- not Python-related
, since that's what Chromium extensions are written in
do you know any good JS servers?
idk if these are good, but at least a list exists
https://github.com/mhxion/awesome-discord-communities?tab=readme-ov-file#javascript
https://github.com/mhxion/awesome-discord-communities?tab=readme-ov-file#typescript
@peak depot funny timing of mentioning that as soon as I decide to listen again to the song I've been listening to a lot in the past weeks
idk how many times it's been exactly, it's not that easy to get those stats out of youtube
4 ads in 2.5 minutes, wtf youtube
can you pay instagram to remove those like with youtube?
in case of VK, the answer is no, I think
so Instagram might be the same
@peak depot
(instagram)
this might be a law thing
(if they estimate they earn more from ads than from subscriptions, then they have no reason to offer subscriptions except if the laws demand such option)
((per user))
A year ago, we launched Subscription for no ads in the EU to comply with changing regulatory requirements, specifically the GDPR and the DMA.
it was indeed a law thing

have dapp programer is there?
what's dapp
is blockchain app
"if it's blockchain, therefore it's not really decentralised so what could possibly d stand for
"
I have some understanding of the underlying technology but I don't deal with things like Ethereum directly
i want to learnin it. it is very attractive and exciting
do you have a project started already or are you only researching how existing projects are made for now?
i have project but not programing
imo proper distributed systems are way more exciting than blockchain-based abstractions, because they aren't trying to represent the world linearly (because it isn't linear)
distributed systems like that??
stuff like https://raft.github.io/
Raft is a consensus algorithm that is designed to be easy to understand.
and ActivityPub
this is somewhat close to blockchain in that it is linearising state changes
but not all systems are like that -- not systems require a universal consistent change history
nice but i dont know wthat u say! becuse im just researcher now
(those two examples I gave are very different, for completely different environments and trust models)
another common example is databases;
for simplicity, you can look at a replicated key-value store:
how many replicas do we write to before be decide the write succeeded? how many replicas do we read from?
do we use eventual consistency? strong consistency? weak consistency?
I wrote a first version of this posting on consistency models about a year ago, but I was never happy with it as it was written in haste and the topic is important enough to receive a more thorough treatment. ACM Queue asked me to revise it for use in their magazine and I took the opportunity to improve the article. This is that new version. Eve...
@dire pebble is the question about data normalisation? or query planning/indexes? or something else?
docker
MariaDB Server is a high performing open source relational database, forked from MySQL.
@hearty knot @languid cedar (I didn't see which one of you two was asking, so will ping both)
streaming permissions are typically given on a temporary basis if you have something specific you want to stream (e.g. a project you want to show or a problem you want help debugging)
if there's a moderator already present in the voice chat, you can ask them to give you video perms (don't forget to say what exactly you want to stream)
Later
@vocal basin Am I gonna download the one with 2.1MB size?
I see that docker is not essential for my path
it makes things way way easier
installing the database directly onto the host is going to be very troublesome
I want to learn what's going on with databases, so the corresponding difficulty is a good thing to me
it is not a useful type of troublesome, but okay
in production, it's generally going to be docker or equivalent thereof
(Docker, Kubernetes, Zones; or, if you don't manage it, some SaaS provider)
@vocal basin I should download this, right?
big and small installer are different in whether they're self-contained
web one will download things later
a bit weird that it's 32-bit
is there no 64-bit option?
That's why I am asking
It's just the address which deep seek guided me to
there is also https://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/
@vocal basin Do you have experience with MySQL?
all my database-interacting code is written for SQLite and PostgreSQL;
but I have experience deploying and upgrading mysql and mariadb
still attempting to play minesweeper
https://minesweeper.online/game/4366486915
I also heard of SQLite but still don't exactly know where the difference technically occurs, it's actually better for me to use SQLite, but I've decided to use SQL for educational purpose
Nice , looks quite big now
SQLite is targeted towards embedded/simple use
it's a single file, not a service
unlike most other DBs
last i rember you have teach me how to play now i forgot
You have make it really awesome
I'd like to experience usage of a server, so I will use SQL even thought my project is a quite simple app
how many daily active users are?
@vocal basin It's not gonna be a trouble to use SQL for a simple thing, right? I'm almost sure it's worth even only for experience
I don't have the stats for minesweeper.online (since it's not my project), but it seems to be several thousands, judging by how current online count is 1.5K
okay i thought its your's
MySQL/MariaDB/PostgreSQL/SQLite should all be fine
SQL databases that you shouldn't use (some examples):
MSSQL (Microsoft SQL Server), Oracle DB, MS Access
wanna play chess?
Could you briefly explain why?
Or shall I ask it to AI not to take your time?
Oracle DB you shouldn't use because of Oracle (i.e. it's a product that's only made so that you can pay money to Oracle consultants, it has no real utility nowadays)
also it's proprietary and actively rotting on the inside
why not MSSQL: mostly because Microsoft themselves don't believe in it, they're moving to postgres
why not MS Access: proprietary + it values being part of and integrated with ms office more than being a database
Join the challenge or watch the game here.

okay
I aborted and made a rematch, should flip sides
i need white but its okay
did my game play improve or you are not playing seriously?
I'm not really thinking in advance right now; I think you used to play more strongly at some point in the past
i am playing moves to quickly without thinking

@astral coral hello
hey
how is your work going?
okay
Or go to the toilet.
@gentle flint We had some lineworks done nearby the other day and they apparently fucked it up. Our powerboards kept complaining of under/overvolting and kept shutting down. Turns out, the workers hadn't properly anchored the lines to the connector points on the pole, so they were arcing.
It buggered up one of our tv recorder units.
But I don't think it was electronic damage, I think it just didn't like the power being shut down constantly.
So I think the software got confused.
We didn't have to.
Freebie replacement.
It wasn't listening to the hard reset sequence.
Overvolting, yes.
Ahh, so if it's warm from being operational, low resistance.
Iiiinteresting.
More the point for me, though, was the potential fire danger presented by the arcing poles.
Especially here.
Yes.
Excuse me.
you are excused

I need to take certified courses, but they are really expensive. do you know a route, can you really help, I'm sorry to be sincere and I'm stressed, now maybe I won't understand what you're going to say but I'll be really grateful if you have a roadmap that you can show me, I don't have friends at school and this is the last lesson this year, so my motivation is very low. I even thought about quitting this job.
what is a roadmap, in your understanding?

@rugged root does the self flagellation include wearing the horse hair shirts like in the middle ages?
well i just have some general theory questions at the moment , as i said im very green to python , so im practicing running sets, tuples, and dictionaries ,
In a broad view , how are these connected in terms of using it for data analysis ? namely the tuples, sets, and dictionaries ?
Burlap
AF on the case
@rugged root it collapses like a star; sh_ttier nova
Typing in their specific text boxes on their site is what they were tracking.
So tuples, sets, lists, and dictionaries are all considered container types. tuples are like lists but you can't change them after you define them
Anything else was unpaid. Such as actually working out the problems.
sets and dictionaries use what's called a hash map, with the main benefit being that you can quickly look, to see if a value is in them
When there's a bug bounty for docs/devops bugs, I'd do it more often.
dictionaries are key-value pairs. Think of it like an actual dictionary; you want to know the definition of "ham". You look it up and them bam, you have the definition of ham
Just because people don't talk about it doesn't mean they aren't doing it.
sorry but whats a "hash map" ?
your typography is hurting my TeXed brain
Think of it like.... Let's say that you have values. When you put it into the container, it gets assigned its own special spot
The container knows exactly where that spot is, so long as you're looking for that particular thing
Bug bounty is nice and all, but I want a more predictable, consistent, and reliable income stream.
Which is part of why I am working on learning blue collar skills such as outboard motor repair.
don't worry, thanks to modern AI technology, the supply of bugs is quite steady
Lots of demand for blue collar in Maine because all of the contractors are dying of old age.
though if a company mainly uses AI to build their products they're unlikely to understand the concept of a bug bounty
I use pdb more often than I use the regular python repl lol
I bet there's something in Python or Rust for that.
Why did you raise your voice? we were able to hear you just fine before.

Let the haters hate
They're going to anyways
You should ask
they're afk, it'll be fine
@flint hill this says the Discord account is a day old
this is when they got here
been on Discord a bit, newer to this server, though I first came here in 2020
but I left and returned at a point
Hemlock got to the server after I got to Discord
so not that long ago
that's not bad...
I imagine that's the case for many
I imagine DIscord has more htan doubled itsu sers since 2018
If 3 years from now is soon
I wouldn't call 2028 soon, not soon enough for sure
considering where I live and who's running it into the ground for the next 4
Hey @versed heath 👋
1️⃣ Open Google Chrome (or any other browser).
2️⃣ Visit any website of your choice.
3️⃣ Right-click anywhere on the page and select "Inspect" (or press F12).
4️⃣ Go to the Console tab.
5️⃣ Type the following command and press Enter:
window.devicePixelRatio
Can't you just hit f12?
Yes
My F12 has a ⭐ icon on it
Looks like Mute on F1
Yes
In this mode, I can use fn + f1 to mute volume
in this mode just f1
opens help?
wdym?
Yes
In this mode it is mute for speaker
@versed heath Hello nerdy!
@primal shadow Don't you have custom key option for windows shortcut?
Like desktops in windows, etc?
I can program some keys sometimes
"default" not quite, but courtesy of M$FT
Though after I did that, I learned I can reprogram the touchpad's 4 finger gestures to manage my media as well
so I mostly use those
Oh
Is this third party?
courtesy of M$FT
not default, not third party
Hmm
Ah ur using powertoys
But could you change ur shortcut for your desktops view and change between desktops ?
@primal shadow
these things?
They're able to be changed by default IIRC
That's what I did, I Set the 4 fingers to media
Actually it can't change defualt shortcuts like desktop view or switching between different desktop!
pretty sure that's what it was origianlly
Nah
windows shortcut key
That's touchpad gesture is different
like ctrl + alt + tab
to switch between tabs
windows + tab is for task view
I think you cann't change key for this using powertoys
https://www.autohotkey.com/docs/v1/index.htm might work for you?

about to wait

Does an np.array LT/GT return an array?
or a bool
np.array < int returns array?
I don't use np
@sour stirrup Yo
@unique wyvern Wait, there IS a const
It's just that let is single assignment
const just needs to be at compile time
What're you working on? 👀
I'm also not certain you want to sum them
Oh right, like metalurgy?
as the list should be a bunch of values, so summing them would give a whole LOT of white, and not as many, but still many more black, unless a significant portion of the black are black black
Oh this is weird to me. I'm looking over Nim, and this is how they do case statements:
let name = readLine(stdin)
case name
of "":
echo "Poor soul, you lost your name?"
of "name":
echo "Very funny, your name is name."
of "Dave", "Frank":
echo "Cool name!"
else:
echo "Hi, ", name, "!"
I've never seen of used in this manner
If in doubt, try printing out the arrays and see if they look right
Why. Why light blue
@whole bear Yo
sup?
how is that comparison working, unless a PIL image turns into a fancy list
I see
@arctic lantern If you're wondering why you can't talk, check the #voice-verification channel. That'll tell you what you need to know about the voice gate
Oh shit, they do return a fun list when you evaluate them like that
of bools
so the math should be fine
Yeah it's weird getting used to when you first start using numpy, but super useful
Oh I haaaaaate this:
inc i
Increment using inc
That's so strange
Going to take me a hot minute to get used to loops having their own scope
Every language has to have a few weird design choices
Fair
But maybe there's a good reason ¯_(ツ)_/¯
no ; s in python bro.
also a is an array and 200 is a integer so it cant be compared ... in m code im using comparison between pixel counts
Spite
On the plus side, you can have named breaks
Oh boy, another one that's going to take me a bit, 1 .. 10 is inclusive on both ends
when is interesting. It can be evaluated at compile time
Same as if with a couple other differences
Still neat
lol, they don't hurt
force of habit
waaaat
-sighs- In nim, they aren't called methods or functions
They're called procedures
Just.... why
I feel like this is one of the only languages that does that
Wellll technically that's more correct (some would say)
this is just a result of mutable ints and uniform call syntax
Me still no likey
like, you can do inc(1) or 1.inc even
Oh fair
fortran does it too
algol
pascal has procedures and functions which are different things
When I'm being pedantic, I call python functions procedures
And reserve "function" for pure functions without side-effects
might be a dumb question but is doing projects in minecraft a good way to develop programming skills
like i have seen some cool things like minecraft computers
pascal uses functions for code blocks which return a result, procedures for code blocks which do not return a result
is it efficient though
efficient?
procedure is an operation, function is a calculation
Okay but what if you're reaaaaaaaaaally crappy at it
optimized growth
@woeful blaze can you explain again what you're trying to do? I didn't follow. Do you have an example?
more efficient than playing with sticks in the dirt? Yes
more efficient than using a "proper" programming language where you aren't concerned with physically placing large blocks to make hte computer? unlikelyt
Crap, back later again
But > 0 is still > 0
So I won't say it's the msot efficient, but it's likely to keep your attention longer
and be less boring
What's the application?
quick question how far should you have achieved in programming in 3 days
so you might end up spending more time on it
im on my day 3
not much
i can do basic functions
that's good progress
What's the total count of hte array?
run it against a smaller image where you know the answer
then you can better diagnose where things are going wrong
is it true that the easier the language is for humans the longer time it takes for the computer to process it
on it
yes
make a 10x10 image where you've got 10 black , 20 white, the rest 128/128/128 grey to not be counted
No but why I want to do is take an import let's say I put in time as a keyword from an input box and then it will search for that specific import within each python file sure it would be taking a long time but I can find almost any file with an import then so if I'm looking for a pie torch project that I can't remember the name of because my brain just forgets things immediately I can type in the imports that I'm using and it will narrow it down to the project
on it sir!1
how come if some languages are faster why dont people just only use that language
like if c++ is the fastest why not only use c++
what is the use of other languages
C++ sucks to write
IMO
This sounds like something you'd use ack for: https://beyondgrep.com/
It's for like searching code in a folder with regular expressions.
why do people use different languages for different things
preference
complex things takes easier framework
a decision must be made
is it all preference
generally the decision maker has a preference
so no technical reason
technically we could all write it in assembly
that's where personal preference comes in
and skill
Computers are fast enough that if it doesn't matter it doesn't matter
vast majority of the time, it doesn't matter
With ack, you would use a command like ack 'import foobar', and it would list the files that contain that text. It's similar to grep, but more optimised for searching code.
And with ag, you would do similar, but faster
@mossy cedar Try using a slider to get the threshold right: ```py
import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
from matplotlib.widgets import Slider
arr = ...
fig, (ax1, ax2) = plt.subplots(nrows=2)
foo = ax1.imshow((arr >= 0) * 255)
slider = Slider(ax2, '', 0, 255)
def update(val):
foo.set_data((arr >= val) * 255)
slider.on_changed(update)
plt.show()
Yep
Oh right
Said something already built into python or at least an import that can use
here
I don't think there's anything like that in the standard library, but you could implement it yourself in python using pathlib and re: ```py
from pathlib import Path
import re
root = Path('/some/directory')
pattern = re.compile(r"^import ([a-zA-Z0-9_.]+)", re.MULTILINE)
imports = {
name
for filepath in root.rglob('*.py')
for name in pattern.findall(filepath.read_text())
}
print(*sorted(imports))
I just cobbled that together in a few minutes, so it's probably not perfect.
yes
