I just picked up a P51 for $240 usd shipped. I've loved ThinkPad's since the t61 and have been using them since then. My daily driver for the last 4 years has been the T440p which I've upgraded as much as possible. The T440p was purchased in 2020 for $190 usd and I put around $150 into it. Current leaving specs are I7 4702mq 16gb ram, and a whopping 4 tb of storage (it'll be going into the new thinkpad)

As for the new ThinkPad (P51) I got lucky and found someone on ebay that was taking almost 60$ less than everyone else that had just been listed. The specs are as follows; Laptop CPU: i7 7700HQ 2.80GHz GPU: NVIDIA M1200 SSD: 256GB RAM: 32GB Screen: 1080p.

When I receive the laptop I'll be doing all the basic tasks like cleaning it, replacing thermal pads / paste & replacing the battery.

Is there anything you suggest doing?

I typically wouldn't touch the thermal paste/pads on a laptop. The less internals you futz with the better

But I'm also overly cautious with them

default_value works on pre-parsed values (ie strings), like #[clap(default_value = "100")]

default_value_t works on post-parsed values (ie your data type), like #[clap(default_value_t = 100)]

#[clap(default_value)] used to mix these concepts and would set your default to T::default. We deprecated this and instead encourage #[clap(default_value_t)]. This doesn't mean default_value = ... is deprecated, just without a = is.

Does anybody know whether there were any big changes between 3.9 and 3.10 to do with how CPython deals with timestamps? I'm having issues with timestamp conversion but it's under a few layers of custom python bindings so I'd like to see if there's any changes I should be looking at before fully digging in. Pls help if you can!

# rugged root Like what exactly is breaking?

To be honest itโ€™s difficult to say because of the layers of custom C binding we have that Iโ€™m getting somebody to assist with debugging. We basically have times in the form of microseconds_from_epoch that are converted into C timestamps, in CPython3.9 this works fine but 3.10 creates misformed timestamps.

As much as necessary, as little as possible: Whatever you need to document, e.g., decision papers, try to focus on only one thing at a time and include only the necessary information for this one thing. Extensive documentation is hard to read and to understand. Additional information should be stored in the appendix. Especially for decision papers it is more important to tell a convincing story instead of just throwing tons of arguments. Further, this saves you and your co-workers, who have to read it, a lot of time. Have a look at some documentation you have done in the past (source code, models, decision papers, etc.) and ask yourself the following questions: โ€œAre all necessary information included to understand it?โ€, โ€œWhich information are really required and which could be omitted?โ€ and โ€œDoes the documentation has a red line?โ€.

I'd expect it's first syllable that's stressed in `bumpalo' (by analogy to `buffalo')

#

@verbal zenith Bump is !Sync, so probably uses something like RefCell on the inside for interior mutability to allow for alloc via shared reference

#

@verbal zenith was it saying that variants are too different?

#

oh

#

it's actually not guaranteed to be this way

#

Rust can and will reorder fields

#

@verbal zenith does clippy from CLI show the same warning?

#

Bump returns a box

#

you also need to enable features for it to provide that

#

if you want it to escape Bump you need to move it to main memory

#

at which point why not just allocate it normally

#

@verbal zenith you can but not always

#

I think the only time I use macro_rules! in the past many months was when I needed to repeat a match many times slightly different

#

ah

#

you can have a "box"-like thing

#

with a feature

vocal basin
#

the difference from just reference is that it Drops

#

&'a mut should be fine for most times

#

or just &'a

#

type aliases can't be inside impl on stable

#

you can clone out of it

#

new thing will be in default allocator

#

global one

#

since it's just &T getting cloned

#

Vec is useful because it can be made with a single allocation

#

if you know the necessary capacity

#

if you're moving stuff from Bump into Vec you can count it first

vocal basin
#

since I call bumpalo::boxed::Box::leak anyway

#

(yes was response to just using Box instead of bumpalo)

vocal basin
#

(*box).clone()

#

no

#

not really

#

you need parentheses

#

(*b).clone() clones the inner value
*b.clone() clones the whole box, then moves the value out of it

#

second is expected to be less efficient

#

it might

#

it won't do it in debug builds

#

(*b).clone() is same as b.deref().clone() but without requiring Deref in scope

#

@verbal zenith extension trait

pub trait

#

then use

#

pub(crate) trait rather

#

all trait functions have the same visibility as the trait itself

#

pub(crate) is equivalent to internal in C#

vocal basin
#

^ also covers pulling String out of Box<str>

#

or, structrured differently,

trait CloneInner {
    type InnerOwned;
    fn clone_inner(&self) -> Self::InnerOwned;
}

impl<T: ToOwned> CloneInner for Box<T> {
    type InnerOwned = T::Owned;
    fn clone_inner(&self) -> Self::InnerOwned {
        (**self).to_owned()
    }
}
#

this guarantees a singular clone_inner per type

vocal basin
#

^ just because .value_set wants a const-size array reference instead of a slice

#

you can put code generation source as example in the project itself

#

examples/generate-500k.rs

#

cargo run --release --example generate-500k

#

and just put files with fn main() in there

vocal basin
#

cargo run --release --example generate -- 500000
