i desoldered and destroyed one of the components and then scavenged the other part from the extra kit
i was only able to get 1 of the blinky lights working and then time was up
so i will need to get my own soldering iron and finish it or bring it back next year.
we had to take pictures of these little things just to try and figure out which one was which and where to solder it

I'm currently working on managing a database of active users for my app. Since no client-side techniques reliably detect page or browser closures (unload, beforeunload, visibilitychange...), I've been exploring alternative ideas:
A ping/pong system: The server regularly sends pings to the client, which responds; if there's no response, the client is disconnected.
A presence score system: When the client interacts with the site, its presence score is reset to 100%; if it drops to 0%, the server pings it, and if there's no response, the client is disconnected.
A ping/pong system where the client is active.
These solutions pose various challenges, such as the "unnecessary" overloading of the server in a ping/pong scenario, or excessive database calls in the presence score case, since all presence scores are updated for each user at regular intervals.
