I'm working part-time at a convenience store at night.
Once the wind gets under something, it's so often just game over.
it's mental
and with cars, oh, look...a convenient gap
Ah yeah, I did my time working that kind of job
Hope the night goes quick for you at least
I leave work at 9 a.m., so it is impossible to go to bed early.
That suuuuuuucks
So is your sleep schedule flipped?
Like sleep during the day and up at night?
where is this picture from?
Unfortunately, yes
It's currently 12 a.m. here.
I'm used to it because I do this every day.
Ah that's fair
yeah ๐
Very cool

Oh, I don't like Korean history. The reason is that Korea is historically too weak.
But I still love Korea.
Interesting mythology, though
uh wow I thought you were talking about the food this whole time xD
Are you originally Korean?
yeah
Then I think you should be proud of your history because your nation developed so much in a short period of time
Yes, that is true and I am proud of my country for making such progress in a short period of time.
However, I am sad because of the historical pain.
Ok then xD
I'm using a translator to chat, so I don't know if the meaning was conveyed well.
The translation made sense.
Oh, that's good.

hello
It is mandatory in our country to study history, but is it the same in other countries?

Yeah, we cover it in our schools.
Yes and no. But the question is whose history, and with what slant?
Or outright fabrication.

Web-based python environment. One of the better ones.
I hate web-based Python.
Others do not.
It's good in that people don't need to install Python to use it. They can just visit a website.
I don't like web-based Python because the implementations are so often awkward and buggy. Things which ought to work in regular Python don't necessarily work in web-based Python. Calls to input can be a bit wiggy. Learners often use input. Educators like stuff they don't have to buggerise around with installing...hello replit.
It's not really how most Python is run in the real world.
So people learn replit vs learning Python.
So when it comes to doing stuff without replit, they get a bit lost.
Which is fine, it's just a bit of a transition.
I think at this point it's just that I'm tilting at windmills more than anything.
why use input when you can use argparse?
Why use argparse when you can use sys.argv? Why use Python when you can use C? Why use C when you can use assembly? Why use assembly when you can use electronics? Why use electronics when you can use a great big fuck-off stick to hit people?
because sys.argv is an antipattern.
Great. Big. Stick.
use patterns, not antipatterns. it isn't hard.

large companies tend to stick with a main release I think
speed increase is negligible from what I understand.

!d slice
class slice(stop)``````py
class slice(start, stop, step=1)```
Return a [slice](https://docs.python.org/3/glossary.html#term-slice) object representing the set of indices specified by `range(start, stop, step)`. The *start* and *step* arguments default to `None`. Slice objects have read-only data attributes `start`, `stop`, and `step` which merely return the argument values (or their default). They have no other explicit functionality; however, they are used by NumPy and other third-party packages. Slice objects are also generated when extended indexing syntax is used. For example: `a[start:stop:step]` or `a[start:stop, i]`. See [`itertools.islice()`](https://docs.python.org/3/library/itertools.html#itertools.islice "itertools.islice") for an alternate version that returns an iterator.
A slice meaning a section of the slicable object. So from position A to position B, or every second thing in it, or every third, etc. You can use slicing to read things backward, too, and that's what that slice is.
Unspecified start, unspecified end, step of negative one. In essence, reverse.

Hi guys
Keeping in mind that polydimensional slicing doesn't work this way with Python lists and tuples, etc, only with third-party stuff, though with a bit of cleverness, it's still doable.
i've been doing some network automation in python over last few months/years. And in parallel still trying to improve my way with python and see where it takes me.

When you run your code and the interpreter encounters an unhandled error, the running of the code will halt and an error message will be printed. That message is the traceback. Your have provided an excerpt, but not the entire thing.
There is often useful information in the traceback.

!d pandas.DatetimeIndex
class pandas.DatetimeIndex(data=None, freq=_NoDefault.no_default, tz=_NoDefault.no_default, normalize=False, closed=None, ambiguous='raise', dayfirst=False, yearfirst=False, ...)```
Immutable ndarray-like of datetime64 data.
Represented internally as int64, and which can be boxed to Timestamp objects that are subclasses of datetime and carry metadata.
Changed in version 2.0.0: The various numeric date/time attributes ([`day`](https://pandas.pydata.org/pandas-docs/stable/reference/api/pandas.DatetimeIndex.day.html#pandas.DatetimeIndex.day "pandas.DatetimeIndex.day"), [`month`](https://pandas.pydata.org/pandas-docs/stable/reference/api/pandas.DatetimeIndex.month.html#pandas.DatetimeIndex.month "pandas.DatetimeIndex.month"), [`year`](https://pandas.pydata.org/pandas-docs/stable/reference/api/pandas.DatetimeIndex.year.html#pandas.DatetimeIndex.year "pandas.DatetimeIndex.year") etc.) now have dtype `int32`. Previously they had dtype `int64`.
Hrm.
There's either radio interference or, I suspect, it's the rain that's still screwing with the internet.
Gets into the copper wires, I think.
Creates shorts. Yay old wiring.
That we aren't allowed to fix.
Even though it's in our own house.
What's that? Get an electrician? No. They're not allowed to touch it, either.
So your dataframe needs a pandas.DatetimeIndex instance as a timestamp or whatever.
so what can i do to fix it in my data frame ,cause i tested the code with a dataframe i downloaded from yahoo it works
My suggestion is that you ask in the #data-science-and-ml channel. I don't work with Pandas, and this financial stuff will also probably be up their alley, too.

Yo ๐ป
It's not within my sphere of influence to do so, I think.
I did, they were dry.
I think it's the pit.
So public utility/private company arena.
Okay, so we have the modem/router. From there, it's copper cable into the house wiring which in turn goes down the street to the pit, where all the local copper in our segment converges, and from there it's optic fibre off to the local exchange and from there to wherever else it goes, and I suspect that water has flooded the pit.
Or something.
It's all NBN.
ISPs buy bandwidth and IP space off the NBN.
Yes and no.
Well, there's one company that administers the NBN, and from there the ISPs go through the NBN and we go through the ISPs.
It's bullshit, but that's what people get for voting in the previous party.
Experts advised the government to do things the right way, then the government went, "You know what? Let's do it the wrong way and six times more expensively."

no, it's my mosquito net
They're tricky things, mosquitos.
I've had things sealed up fairly tight, and they will still find their way in.
You wouldn't like it where I live, then.
Oh, okay, well, rubbish, sure.
Maybe they're burning treated wood.
Even if it is that, it wouldn't smell awful awful.
It'll be some other compound.
On cold nights, a lot of people start up their wood fires, here. It's not an unpleasant smell in moderation.
The air is otherwise clean enough for it to be more atmospheric and charming rather than disgusting.
If you rent a hotel room, you can freely assume that the outside may be monitored.
But not the inside.
Any responsible regulation would mandate that no cameras are placed inside.

Docker is paid if you earn too much

hey guys, can someone help me with some basic python stuff handling some csv files?
what's the question?
I want to get the data type from the values of every column but I dont want to use pandas
!d csv
Source code: Lib/csv.py
The so-called CSV (Comma Separated Values) format is the most common import and export format for spreadsheets and databases. CSV format was used for many years prior to attempts to describe the format in a standardized way in RFC 4180. The lack of a well-defined standard means that subtle differences often exist in the data produced and consumed by different applications. These differences can make it annoying to process CSV files from multiple sources. Still, while the delimiters and quoting characters vary, the overall format is similar enough that it is possible to write a single module which can efficiently manipulate such data, hiding the details of reading and writing the data from the programmer.
i dont know how i can do it
this is built-in CSV support
you know what else existed before Docker for a couple of years?
Docker
it just wasn't named "Docker" but was developed by, essentially, the same company
it's not "new hype technology" anymore, and it wasn't entirely "just a repackaging of previous ideas" ever
@twilit stone are you talking about container being able to access host's ports?
then just configure those ranges
ofc default configuration won't be "perfect configuration"
software isn't magic, it can't just guess what you want
"gets exhausted"
that is also fixed by subnet configuration
just make it /16 not /24
to exhaust /20, you need over 4000 addresses, not 255

yes, that's why "in idealistic world"

@lunar haven you can't divide an abstract dictionary "in half"
because there's no order
note the word abstract
dictionary is just a mapping
it has no ordering
how to know when to use dicts and when to use objects?
to established proper ordering, you probably need trees
classes probably
yes
if you need arbitrary number of keys, then probably dicts
!d collections.OrderedDict
class collections.OrderedDict([items])```
Return an instance of a [`dict`](https://docs.python.org/3/library/stdtypes.html#dict "dict") subclass that has methods specialized for rearranging dictionary order.

okay, I looked up, the order is defined since 3.7
from 3.6 docs:
The order-preserving aspect of this new implementation is considered an implementation detail and should not be relied upon

https://paste.pythondiscord.com/azawoquwep.py
I forgot a thing there
an obvious one
except re.error is wrong
buffering
depends on the model, file size, etc.
@midnight agate in a more correct different version it is supposed to read the file twice for the same reason (when removing)
I chose not to do that not to increase complexity
although
eh
not really
for deletion you need to keep in memory
or use temporary files
print(file=file) because .write takes too much thinking to use
@midnight agate auto-imported from sys
but it shouldn't be there
I already said that
yeah, I'd rather use more memory than use file locks

I was restricting myself to C# sometimes (because shashank was writing Java)
C# still has string interpolation over Java so unfair anyways
surprisingly similar to the actual meaning
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shashank
how is some* pattern called
* being .* in regex
similar to glob
but not for paths
some\* meaning is undefined, spec doesn't say how it should behave

raise NotImplemented
assert matches("Buy*", "Buy Rice") is True
assert matches("Buy", "Buy Rice") is False
assert matches("Buy Milk", "Buy Rice") is False
assert matches("Buy Rice", "Buy Rice") is True
(matches could have a better name)

!d match
8.6. The match statement
New in version 3.10.
The match statement is used for pattern matching. Syntax:
match_stmt ::= 'match' subject_expr ":" NEWLINE INDENT case_block+ DEDENT
subject_expr ::= star_named_expression "," star_named_expressions?
| named_expression
case_block ::= 'case' patterns [guard] ":" block
```...
Yeah if you want to be pre-3.10 compatible you can't use it.
@midnight agate
https://www.codewars.com/kata/5cde541f52ed7f000c0aa9a0
Yep ๐
@sinful phoenix did you get your , todolist code to work ?
i had a , error using ToDoList so i renamed it list
i made your code in the style im used to
This one was nice (https://paste.pythondiscord.com/itefagorah if anyone's remotely interested)
if everything is stored consecutively:
atom_names: list[str]
atoms: bytearray # or `bytes` if immutable
atom_positions: dict[str, slice]
atom_names with fixed order
atom_positions for each name give you the slice
atoms[atom_positions[name]]
Ah nice. This is what I've got, but it currently doesn't pass the tests because of a weird edge-case :C
https://paste.pythondiscord.com/yefepapigi
I actually don't understand the test cases ๐
Oh nah, on the exercise ze linked to.
dict.update takes a dictionary to merge with the instance
The ones in the problem description? Just checking since I didnt sign in or run automated tests just did things manually
Nah the ones you get when you click 'attempt'. They don't seem to be consistent with the other tests
Yikes, mine fails 6 of the 25 too
My code returns py {'1.one.two': 5, '1.one.four': 3, '1.two.four': 8, '1.two.five': 7, '1.three.four': 2, '1.three.five': {}, '1.four': 5, '2': []} for one of the tests, when it expects ```py
{'1.one.two': 5, '1.one.four': 3, '1.two.four': 8, '1.two.five': 7, '1.three.four': 2, '1.three.five': {}, '1.four': 5, 2: []}
