# dusty aspen I'm not sure if I should do that https://doc.rust-lang.org/stable/nightly-rustc/...

The rustc_driver is essentially rustc's main() function. It acts as the glue for running the various phases of the compiler in the correct order, using the interface defined in the rustc_interface crate.

The rustc_interface crate provides external users with an (unstable) API for running code at particular times during the compilation process, allowing third parties to effectively use rustc's internals as a library for analysing a crate or emulating the compiler in-process (e.g. the RLS or rustdoc).

kali is fine if you're a student setting up a vm for the intended use of kali. kali makes it easier to get a class full of students all on the same page and able to test certain things. It's a good starting point for doing CTF and games like hackthebox and tryhackme.

#

it's really not where you should start with learning linux unless you're enrolled in such a class tho

#

The primary trouble with using kali is that everyone will assume things about you (mainly that you're ignorant) if you talk about using kali lol.

#

And a lot of times theyre probably not wrong.

#

But its good to understand that if you are thinking about getting into it. TLDR: if you ARE a student, there is no shame in it. But if you're not... do you want to be that guy?

#

that's the question

sinful lark
#

is this some kind of networking thing

kind horizon
#

kali is a rolling release distribution that focuses on software used by penetration testers in a virtualized environment.

sinful lark
#

i searched kali and closed the tab cuz i saw networking XD

deep heath
sinful lark

kind horizon

Its a whole series of jobs actually.

deep heath
#

But as you have a contract with someone, it's legal. You try to find whether procedures and systems are safe, before someone tries to exploit them

sinful lark
#

sick. u get to be a hacker and also get paid

kind horizon
#

Most of the job is writing reports to convince your clients that they should be paying you. Rather that do cool 1337 hacks you're mostly scanning for shit everyone is vulnerable to and then writing reports.

deep heath
sinful lark
#

ahh got it

kind horizon
#

There are a lot of aspects of it. A lot of people don't hire a pen tester until they get breached.

#

So there are phases of how to approach. Its worth looking into it.

#

Imagine watching ads on youtube lol

cursive agate
#

kali has catered tools for hacking. u can use any distro tbh for hacking. anyway. good morning

sinful lark
#

havent seen an ad in years

kind horizon
#

pentesting has a lot prerequisite knowledge required and unfortunately not everyone who signs up for the classes is in the same place

cursive agate
#

setting me up is part of the learning process ;)

kind horizon
#

I'm not saying that you don't need to evolve beyond kali, but kali was developed by people who teach these classes to address the problems they have in those classes with teaching students the job.

#

So you can have linux superiority complex about it but it was built for a reason

#

Its for students

cursive agate
#

sadly i am from Asia. i cant go there.

kind horizon
#

Honestly, I can't imagine what it's like to sign up for a cyber defense class and not have been using tech your entire life.

Is it training wheels? yes it is.

cursive agate
kind horizon
#

spiel, its a german word.

#

The people who develop kali was educators who literally teach classes.

#

That's what my spiel is about.

#

yeah.

deep heath
#

I literally had a workshop about security testing and protecting, so we used kali

kind horizon
#

It's really just something you have to be careful talking about, because 50% of people are going to jump to conclusions that you're committing crimes against the state with it, and the other 50% will assume that you are ignorant and lulz at you when they have never covered the subject in an education setting before.

#

And they cant imagine the usefulness of it there

#

yeah, there isnt just some prerequisite knowledge. There are many, many, many different directions of it.

deep heath
#

Some people in there didn't know much about Linux, so idk...

ocean walrus
#

Lol

deep heath
#

I replied to your reply to my message about the security workshop

#

So I meant the workshop

#

It was people who want to test their own apps or encourage their companies to look into that direction. Because most (if not all) people there were sent there by their companies

kind horizon
#

Its crazy how many developers have never thought about web app sec at all.

#

Like at all

deep heath
#

We also had to sign a waiver that we won't use what we learn for malicious stuff. Because due to how Polish law is written, teaching illegal stuff is illegal XD

Powershell runs on linux

iirc

Lakmatiol uses it on linux

I had a client's guy tell us we should install powershell because something works for him on powershell

The solution was to change apache's config

To ignore sso on api endpoints

His solution was literally to install kerberos and powershell (because powershell did sso on its own, without passing it manually). Even though we said it would invalidate producer's support on that machine. And even though we said the other option was to reconfigure apache
