With the online event, I think the delay is longer. As I recall, last year it was about six weeks until the videos were public on youtube.
They might be trying to solve that this year? I know of at least one of the talks which is now available on youtube via an unlisted video (found by complete accident, so I won't be linking it here.)
if i had to guess the delay is intentional. immediate release of the talks would devalue the online admission fees that attendees pay
any one here uses chatgpt Api?
see #❓|how-to-get-help. be sure to ask a complete question all at once--don't ask to ask
Where would a conversation regarding mask usage at pycon be held? On the discuss site?
Probably best in the discuss.python.org site. My caution would be to be very respectful and go in knowing that the organizers may choose to keep the mask policy regardless of the arguments presented
if there's a conference organisers email and you have thoughts I'd try courteously summarise and send them that way rather than on a discussion site, sounds like an opportunity to start a flame war
They might also send out a post-conference survey, if so that would be a good opportunity to share your thoughts on the mask policy
Hence my question lol
Sounds good! I’ll wait a bit then
I had to ask a few people to take off their mask and some of them looked outright insulted and others happy, even with my explanation as to why I needed it
ya for sure it's a good question, just given the nature I'd try raise in a private forum first if you're willing to do that, conference organisers are generally receptive to this so I think that's more likely to generate actionable feedback than discussions which end up in arguments and then no actionable feedback can be taken away
What was the reasoning?
Deaf and hard of hearing, I rely on lip reading for a lot of conversations
I had to ask guido for his mask off due to his accent lol
I gotcha. Thank you for sharing.
Given the PyCon’s organizers focus on inclusivity, I imagine they’ll be able to make adjustments in the future for cases like yours
As always it’ll be a big balancing act between competing needs
Outside of inclusivity reasons, as someone who’s not anti vaccine / masks etc, and who has kept up on booster shots and such, masks are getting old, I don’t know of any other conference that still requires them
pycorn
Don’t understand why a conference thinks it knows about my health better than me. It’s arrogant when conference is about computing.
as mentioned above, let's constrain any feedback regarding the mask mandate to well-formed discussions sent to the relevant feedback locations for the conference, this channel is not going to become the surface that hosts that discussion.
I just received my feedback email for PyCon US

PyCon 🤯
PyCon!
I'll be there again this year!
I wish I was going
Go next year
@brittle lily who's the point of contact for this?
I want to know what's considered too out-of-date to not be useful for them
Abigail is the one managing it, and the place to drop them off is the Black Python Devs booth. I'm sure you can reach out to the Black Python Devs for more questions
I'd probably say Automate the Boring Stuff first edition might be out of date? since that was long enough ago that there's a fair bit different.
Kind of a measure of, "How much of the book works as it is presented without earmarks" and "how much does a student need someone knowledgeable present to address problems with example code".
She says all kinds of books are great, but she's seen the best reception and use with textbooks that are at a high school to early college level, but don't let that prevent you from bringing anything specific if you are able to donate other things
i’ll be attending for the first time this year 🙂
any speakers happen to have the slide templates converted from .pptx to Keynote? I got the fonts, but it looks like the roundrects are not rounded and there are a few other problems with a naive import
Anyone have plans for what they want to do in Pittsburgh outside of the conference?
No
Last year I was intrigued by the inclines but didn't ride one: https://www.visitpittsburgh.com/blog/how-to-ride-the-pittsburgh-inclines/
be advised that the duquesne (wtf is this word) incline only takes cash and doesn't have a bathroom. and it's a bit of a walk from the convention center. it's a nice walk, though.
as it happens, i am staying at a non-conf hotel that is a little farther from the convention center, and therefore a little closer to the inclines
My first time in Pittsburg I got stuck on an incline (just for 5 minutes)- but the locals assured me that rarely happens 😆. Would recommend if you are just wandering. Nice views at the top
I walked to the top of the slope last year, made me feel more accomplished 😄
(Using a different route than the little trains)
Dancing and finding good places to eat
And now probably this
@dim sage congratulations on your talk being accepted--I'd only be able to understand the parts that are similar to Latin, which presumably isn't any of the parts that have to do with... computers
thank you!, how'd you know?
i'm doing last minute edits and thinking about adding a small summary in english if space allows for it
Someone who knows your real name (I don't remember what it is) saw the speaker list and mentioned that you ("krrt") had a charla
Perhaps the PSF should give speakers the option of submitting voice overs in other languages, and make those available on YouTube.
gotcha
IIRC there's a petition for all the transcribed talks to be made available and linked under each talk (or charla) and be able to automatically be translated
GG krrt, will all the talks be on youtube or how does that work
all the talks get published to youtube, usually a month or two after the conference
does that extend to charlas?
I am really debating on switching from lua to dpy. Should i?
AFAIK, yeah
The charlas from last year are on YouTube, that's a good indicator.
it's pretty nice up top 👀 but i was pretty surprised by just how many lanternflies there were
- Carnegie Museum of Natural History is awesome. I did not have enough time last year to see as much as I wanted.
- National Aviary (I'm biased because I love birding, but this was my highlight last year and I will be going again)
- Pittsburgh Botanic Garden I am looking forward to trying to go here. I love gardens/arboretums. I'm hoping I can go and bring a book to read (weather permitting).
- The inline is neat and unique, definitely a "Pittsburgh" thing to do.
- There's a few Pirates baseball games during the sprints it looks like. It's a lovely stadium.
- Walking around, going to the Point State Park Fountain is nice. Close enough to the convention center, and far enough away that it's a welcome breather.
I am overbooked... >.> but I'm looking forward to trying to see/visit some of these places
👀 Well this is an amazing recommendation list: https://hachyderm.io/@miketheman/112433830461621040
Anyone else from Seattle :)?
Also, Im arriving on the 13th around 7pm. Anyone want to split a ride into the city? Ideally into Shadyside
weather forecast says: bring an umbrella
There are two talks about making interactive documentation with pyscript
wait, somehow I'm looking at last year's schedule??
I feel as though dance-friendly and code-friendly defines a tiny set of individuals. Of which I am a member. 😄
foooooood
if you go to the restaurant with the fries in the sandwich, I recommend getting them on the side
the fries are pretty good, but you can't really taste them when they're in the bread
also I didn't like the "pitt burger". I'm going to try getting their pastrami sandwich this time
good to know!
Everything online says that Condados is not good, but last year i ate there every day, and on one particularly bad day i had it for breakfast AND lunch so... highly recommend.. it's right by the convention center.
you don't like the food at the convention center?
Last year we had a friend from out of the country fly in so it was a lot of eating things for the experience.
oh, cool
their best quote was basically something like "(why do) you guys put cheese on everything"
where is this person from?
east asia?
australia? don't they have similar food as other Anglo countries?
last year there was a "dance space" at pycon, but when i got there it was empty :/
not sure if i got there late or what
I don't recall that being a thing
there were different spaces / rooms available after the main conference for different random things, robotics, language exchange, latin dancing etc
sort of community hosted events i'd say
iirc there was even an anime space
evening open spaces, it sounds like.
yes, i forgot the name
ok, so it's off-topic, but there's actually a reason for it: skim milk. around the 1980s and 1990s, there was a big push to get people to use skim milk instead of whole milk, to cut saturated fats in their diets. But skim milk is made by skimming the fat off the milk, so producing skim milk produces milk fat as a side effect. The dairy farms don't want to waste that milk fat and pay to dispose of it when they could be selling it instead, so they process it into cheese, and sell it in bulk to restaurants, who put that shit on everything because it's cheap and delicious. See https://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/07/us/07fat.html or https://www.reddit.com/r/AskFoodHistorians/comments/nu4vhq/is_it_true_that_dairysubsidy_government_cheese/
👋
🚗 🛬 for airport car pooling (I can't seem to make threads)
I'll be arriving on UA533 Thu 4:34pm 😊
safe travels to all flying today
If anyone's in town early and looking for something to do in an hour, I'm going on the Best of the Burgh walking tour. Tickets are still available: https://www.walktheburgh.com
Same flight!
pittsburgh i am in you
Anyone else on the JFK-PIT delta flight (dl 5719) arriving tonight? I'm probably going to get a taxi to the Westin if anyone wants to car share.
Based on this, I assume Hynek may be
(I've pinged him on Mastodon, thanks)
How do folks like to get from the airport to their hotel? Does everyone just take a cab or is there a better option?
There's a bus from the airport to downtown every 30 minutes. It only takes cash.
https://fosstodon.org/@sethmlarson/114502343050277248
apparently there’s a bus.
Reminder if you're flying to Pittsburgh International Airport that the "Airport Flyer" (28X) bus service costs $3 and drops you off right near the hotels.
Thank you very kindly that's super helpful!
I did Uber but my job is paying for it
About to walk my butt to Nan Xiang Soup Dumplings - Pittsburgh
you can say ass.
OOO there are good soup dumplings in town? ❤️
Maybe idk. I'm also just realizing Im staying at a place on opposite end of where the convention is lol
Oh no. I'm 2 miles away
I thought I really messed up for a moment
Apparently top rated, 30 minutes for me to walk there
You can buy a bus ticket from a machine at the airport, which takes cards as well as cash. You can also use the app called Transit and buy a ticket through that. More info here: https://flypittsburgh.com/pittsburgh-international-airport/ground-transport/ (scroll down to public transit) and here: https://www.rideprt.org/pdfs/28X.pdf and here: (fare info) https://www.rideprt.org/gomobile I rode this bus to and from the airport last year. Super easy and straightforward.
Page for mobile ticketing
On the bus. Sounds like it might be the same one as @spice marsh or @zinc prairie ? Y’all here?
I’m near the front in a white mask and PyCon 2024 shirt.
Same flight, but Thursday
Ah missed the day. Woops.
My first Pycon- I'll have to find something distinctive to wear. But glad you made it safe! Good to know about the bus
Of course I forgot to pack a hoodie 🙃
Time to buy one 😉
I actually tried to find one earlier but couldn't locate one easily near my hotel downtown. I could probably go further afield though...
the teeny tiny target didn't have a men's clothing section
I presume the conference would be selling python gear. Maybe not
yeah I guess there will be conference swag...
i thought it had be ordered ahead
I don't recall the conference ever having hoodies.
Do you remember me? 🥺
strava heat map says running along the trail on the north shore of the alleghany river is pretty popular - anyone have any other recommendations for running routes near downtown?
I probably do, but I might have mistaken myself for someone else 😉
No, I mistook you for the other one
(I probably won't recall your face, sorry, PyCon has so many humans that I forget most of us :). But yes, I definitely remember you)
I'll be wearing a distinct hat this year. For how much of the conference depends on if I start to feel embarrassed
stel are you going to pycon in the popehat
yes
I've run the river a couple times, crossing the bridges is pretty fun. It fizzles out if you go too far east, with less runner happy infra- but you can always double back
Happy to do a morning run with others Friday onwards. I'd be comfortable with 5min/km or 8min/mi but can be flexible. Not to pressed on milage since I find it hard to find the time to run at all during conferences
I have to increase my brand recognition
Any group outings right now?
Is it spammy to send pictures?
No
I’m trying to see if anyone wants to go the Pirates game Monday evening after the first day of sprints.
So if anyone wants soup dumplings, Nan Xiang's is good imo but it's also my first time having it
Looks yummy.
Enjoyed it very much. Got to walk across the Hot Metal Bridge and caught the sunset
oh, you're helping develop it? thanks!!!
I noticed something weird in the schedule. It’s great that the hatchery and summits are added but for some reason the Maintainers and Typing summits both say “pre-registration required” and I’m pretty sure that’s wrong. Typing Summit page says, “You can! No invitation or pre-registration is required.” and the Maintainers page doesn’t say anything about registration. (I’ve reached out to one of the organizers to confirm.)
@eager pecan the schedule in the app that is.
Maintainers summit doesn’t require registration.
here's the bus ticket machine:
https://metalhead.club/@scunning/114505828567551205
I used the app last year and recommend it
#PyConUS attendees who are flying into #Pittsburgh have a $2.75 option for getting from the #PIT airport to the convention center: the #28X #bus.
The ticket machine and door to the 28X are just past baggage claim L, on the left side. You can pay cash, buy a reloadable card, or buy a daily/weekly bus pass.
Track 28X predicted stop times at the airport: truetime.rideprt.org/predictio…
Track real time locations of 28X buses: truetime.portauthority.org/map
Thanks! I've updated the Maintainer's Summit event. Let me know if you see any more issues
It may take a bit to sync
How do i get one of those fancy PyCon US roles
What roles?
You have it, but your other roles have higher priority so it’s not green
Added (By stelercus? Someone beat me to it). Though the sort order places it under your other roles
Typing summit also needs to be changed. Maintainers is perfect now.
you're too fancy as-is.
Who said they ate at codados tacos every day last year?
Just got 2 brisket pleezys, pretty good
#changelog message I considered including in this announcement "I love Keith as much as a gay man can love a straight man in a way that is straight."
I think we need a Fancy Working Group to establish standards on how fancy @eager pecan can be
How does role assignment for speakers work, anyhow?
I push the buttons.
Aha, I kinda thought there might be speaker page scraping, and wondered if I didn't match something, turns out, human driven! Thanks for doing it.
If I’m speaking at a summit am I a speaker? I know I’m a booth fairy.
Sure
Ooh, can I get a presenter role? Pretty please? I'm speaking on Friday afternoon - "Beautiful and Balanced: Using Color Theory in Data Visualizations" ---- oops, looks like I already have it! thanks!
hello everyone! I'm Kira, this'll be my first PyCon! I'm on the train headed there right now and I'm pretty excited for it
I wanted to be around where other attendees are talking so I'm glad I found this server
I'm omniscient ||Keith told me to give it to you||
Where are you coming from that a train is a viable option? Chicago?
If I had taken a train from DC, it would have taken all day, even though we should have a high speed DC-Pitt-Chicago line.
It's an option from Philadelphia, but not a very convenient one...
The fact that a high speed line between Philly and Pitt wasn't built during the previous administration seems to indicate that it won't happen
Low hanging branches.
south jersey! (left from philly)
You did that which godly geek was unwilling
The fastest train between Philly and Pittsburgh is 7.5 hours, vs 5 hours driving or 1.25 hours flying.
i mean a single train is convenient enough for me, plus I can use the time to do things like "make less unhinged accts i would happily share with people" and "finish deciding what I want to go to" since I really didn't have time during the end of my semester
Slower than driving? Smh
The train is like just as slow as driving
plus it comes out like right by the convention center/hotel i'm at which is nice
I flew from PHL to pit also from South Jersey
Ah I just saw this, so even worse
Yeah, the airplane trip is faster, but once you add transit to the airport and bake in time to wait on the TSA, it's a lot closer to driving
I got through TSA real quick, even without real id. I was 3 hrs early though
So yeah 3hrs of sitting there -_-
If the train was 5 hours, I might've taken it. 7.5 and costing just as much as the plane, though? That's a tough sell
wait it costs as much as taking a plane?? gdi
i guess proximity & time to myself is still nice though
When did u fly? I was on the 2:26pm yesterday
i'm used to flying being too expensive so I didn't bother checking lmao
(although nowadays maybe I'm glad to not have to get on a plane anyway lol..)
I'm flying tomorrow on the 2:26 - same plane, different day 🙂
Ah
TSA Pre-Check FTW 🙂 Makes airport traversal SO much let’s stressful IMO.
I wanted to see the testing tutorial so I got in early. Which btw Francesco did a fantastic job. Never used unit test mocks, only pytest fixtures and learned a good deal.
i signed up for two tutorials tomorrow, I'm here so I feel like I should maximize the experience. plus they looked cool! the webgl and recursive descent ones
I REALLY wanted the Polars tutorial but there was no spots
Looking forward to the Apache iceberg talk later in the week
has anyone done sprints at pycon before? It'll be my first time and I'm new to open source in general, so I'm a bit anxious about what to expect
Did they cover pytest-mock at all? I find it's an excellent expansion over the stdlib mock
Did not. Did cover over mutation testing with mutmut and coverage with pytest cov. Lastly we did some integration tests using non mocked but a light weight http server through pytest-httpserver
Nice, thanks for sharing! I recently added mutation testing to termcolor, that was fun to find a couple extra test cases needed to completely remove all mutants
Check this out.
The conference starts days before the first official talk. There’s topic-specific summits, sponsor presentations, and deep-dive tutorials th...
If anyone is thinking of a museum, the museum of illusions was a bit of a bore.
oh that's exactly what I needed to read, thanks! I didn't even realize some of those bigger projects were going to be part of the sprints, it'd be cool if I ended up getting to do something with django or flask or cpython
There will be a ton of projects there. Pick one that you want to contribute to and have at it.
I feel better about it already, much appreciated. I'm going to try to hit the mentored sprints sesh too, registration was full but they told me in an email that they usually have a few no-shows and I can try showing up to see if there's space
The sprint should be valuable. The few PRs I've made helped me build confidence. Proving yourself you can jump into another code base, learn their system and add something meant a lot.
Wish I could hang around for the sprints but job won't pay for that
Too close to the career fair, won't allow it lol
lol is that really why? I suppose I've found the one benefit of not having an industry job! (nothing preventing me from going to the sprints!)
That's definitely what I'm hoping to get out of it, I seesawed on the idea at first but I decided it was probably the move for the same reason I was uncertain about it
Yeah my manager was sitting there while picking stuff out and he was like naaww. Technically I'm not allowed to make open source PRs either. Some nonsense with my job owning the code, even if not on their assets.
But hey I'm getting paid to send 5 days in Pittsburgh on their dime so whatever
ahh yep, that's definitely a good deal! Technically the only other time I've been to Pittsburgh I was getting paid for it (actually Google paid for it, subcontractor work, though nothing to do with software ~w~)
aw that's lame. I've skipped applying to jobs over that sort of thing before, I'm sorta contending with that I'll probably have to just deal with it sooner or later, but I like being able to work on my own things
You can’t do PRs from your personal machine on your own time??? That’s BS!!!
Yeah technically they still own it but like, they would have to come after me. The argument is like, if I put a pr that helps something at the job, its for the job and they paid for it. Which I guess is true since I wouldn't have knew about the problem if I wasn't working there
That is totally insane! I’m glad I work someplace normal.
Should double check what you signed. I work for lockheed martin. Seems pretty standard
Tenable is cool with it. Even working to get approval to do some open source work during work hours.
iirc in california it's illegal for employers to try to do that
I wish. So we can apply to work on open source but legal has to get involved. Big Hassel
In my country it is a default that companies own everything an employee makes , unless stated specifically in the Contract that they can't own , and imagine an employee creates a painting while being in a coding job 😂
Even on their own computer and not during work time?
Yep , "Literally anything not even related to work"
Where do you live???
it's extremely common for employers in the US to claim the rights to software built by software developers employed by that company on their own time. It's rare for companies to actually try to enforce those rights, but claiming them is a form of legal butt-covering. What they very much don't want to have happen is for you to write some software, integrate it into their system, wait a few years until it's extremely entwined, and then tell them that you've decided to start charging an annual license fee for it.
employees say that they're not paid to be butts in seats, they're paid to think of solutions to problems, and so it's not reasonable to expect them to be physically at the keyboard 8 hours a day. The flip side of that same coin is that they don't stop thinking about those problems when the workday ends. Certainly the company expects to own all of the code that you write for them, but if they didn't say that they owned the stuff you write at home, they wouldn't. At least, that's my layman's understanding of the relevant IP law.
anyone know how it is walking in downtown pittsburgh? i assume it's fine but it's an unfamiliar area for me, if it's still pretty light out i'll probably walk to the hotel myself (as opposed to ridesharing) since it's apparently not a very long walk

i did not expect to read something like that today
just ruined my illusions of going /s
Booth fairies are the volunteers who organize the PSF booth. We’ve been working hard for months planning it. Stop by and say hello.
i did not know that was an actual term, thanks for the context
I only learned it last year when I became one.
If you're around for tomorrow's sponsor presentations track, I'll be one of the folks in the afternoon: https://us.pycon.org/2025/schedule/presentation/153/
I haven’t felt unsafe in the daylight the past few days
This year's talk will be at least 50% more interesting and entertaining because we're adding Mike Fielder.
certainly a hook
I've walked like 15 miles past 2 days. Felt fine
i think i'm gonna get a rideshare after all, it's looking darker and the train isn't there yet
new to this "walking around as a girl" business and I'm gonna have a suitcase and a laptop bag which is certainly a look lol
Just picked up my badge this afternoon. Tomorrow will be my first day full of Pycon activities.
Hopefully I can sleep before 4 am tonight. I don't deal well with these timezone changes.
omg, I'm gonna get to see Seb?!
actually when does badge pickup open?
Tomorrow it's 7 am I think
Hours:
Wednesday, May 14th: 7:00 am - 6:00 pm EST
Thursday, May 15th: 7:00 am - 6:00 pm EST
Friday, May 16th: 7:00 am - 5:00 pm EST
Saturday, May 17th: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm EST
Sunday, May 18th: 8:00 am - 1:00 pm EST
Hi 👋 This will be my first pycon. Really excited! Can someone share how I get the PyCon attendee role for my profile?
i left at 8 am and landed at 4PM
the dissonance is real.
Ah, yeah. It was something similar for me, I think. 9 am -> 5:30 pm (but with 6 hour time difference)
Hi! I hope you like it. Do you have any talks on your must watch list?
By the way, if anyone is looking for people to have dinner with in the coming days, I'm interested. I'm travelling alone.
Are you here in Pittsburgh?!?!? Nice!
Anyway, I need to get back to stressing out about my tutorial
I'm looking forward to the python + rust and the pydantic talks. And trying to see as many Charlas as I can. My Spanish is horrible but I can understand it pretty good.
Oh, nice. I think I'll want to go to at least one rusty talk.
The only talk I really don't want to miss is Hynek's talk on Design Pressure (https://us.pycon.org/2025/schedule/presentation/81/). There are a few others I've marked, but I'm intrigued by this one.
Take the taxi/rideshare. It’s no fun schlepping that around no matter what.
I took the bus from the airport to downtown. That was quite easy and cheap.
Ride share/taxi within downtown is quite easy
If you’re interested in security there’s a bunch of stuff going on including the talk I’m giving (and shamelessly plugging) at the Maintainers Summit on Friday afternoon.
I think your talk overlaps with Hynek's, but it does sound very interesting.
Enjoy your first PyCon! I highly recommend the newcomer orientation. And don’t forget the “first time attendee” badge ribbon! Stop by the PSF booth and say, “Hi!”
I wonder who will get the most ribbons record this year
Yeah. I’ll probably be finishing my talk and going to Q&A when he starts. LMK if you’re interested in the slides. I’ll be sharing them when it’s done.
Yeah, that would be cool
I have 3 that I made. You have to ask nicely to get one.
Did anyone go to a tutorial today? There's a coffee break in the timeslot, right? Is it a shared slot/all tutorials together or "whenever the tutorial has time for a break"?
Def a different situation for you. I did see a lot of solo women walking around though
Pittsburgh seems clean and safe. I would say I'm surprised by how few people I actually see walking around
The talk I’m looking forward to the most is Amethyst’s “Or Else”
But I've read this isn't the most favorable place to live so that's that
i walked lmao, didn't want to deal with uber. you're definitely right though
I think the tutorial runs for x time and there are snacks and coffee set up between sessions.
what's it about?
Writing security advisories for humans and computers.
Called “So You Have a Security Vulnerability, What Now?”
oh that sounds super interesting, I wasn't looking at the maintainers summit since I'm not a maintainer but it sounds neat
I’m not a maintainer either but I figured that would be a good audience for the talk. It’s at 2:30. You can leave when it’s done. No one will take offense.
I walked from the car rental place to the hotel last year. Stupid decision.
did something happen?
oo, double checked what I had planned at that time and I definitely think I might be there
Returned the car after driving to Pittsburgh. Was just a pain walking the mile or so with the suitcase and backpack. This year I’ll ride share.
oo yeah that seems not nice. In my case the train station was like, a five minute walk from the train station
If anyone’s bored Trey wants to teach you a game.
Hey #PyConUS!
Want to learn a game? I would love to teach you the Cabo card game! 🃏
Come to the Westin lobby!
And if you’re on Bluesky I set up a feed to monitor the hashtags.

His majesty wants to go to PyCon with me
How do you get the attendee or presenter role? Is it just hoping that an admin sees your message?
Wait, stel's here
I'm flying over in the morning
How long is your flight?
By the way, can you remove the EuroPython: Organiser role from me? I'm not involved this year.
An hour
Oh, that's manageable
I'm sure one hour domestic flights are incomprehensible to the Dutch mind
Yeah, you'd be out of the country in The Netherlands
but I took a US domestic flight on Tuesday (Atlanta to Pittburgh)
Was that just a transfer, or did you see Atlanta?
Can I get the PyCon presenter role in exchange?
Just transfer (and immigrations, etc.)
There is no such thing as domestic flights
My best friend is dutch. When I told him I was going to PyCon the first time, he told me not to forget my passport
Though some Americans might need a passport for a domestic flight as of, like, this week. If their driver's license doesn't implement RealID
Yea …. Was almost me 😅
Right. Well, I didn't have to show my passport when flying back from Iceland to The Netherlands, not even at the gate.
So there's that
Entering the US was different. The officer asked me at least three times if I was bringing weed. Apparently I just look like a junky.
Look at my kitty
I believe that the registration fee for felines is $0 this year.
Did you fly out of Amsterdam?
Coming from Amsterdam? Be glad that’s all they asked!
Yes, Schiphol to Atlanta, Atlanta to Pittsburgh.
I do like the badge this year. Nice colors.
Taking a train from Trenton to Pittsburgh tomorrow. How's the shindig so far?
i think that's the same train i took!
That's a far train lol
That or driving and I consider it good me-time. 🙂
What part of Jersey you guys from? I'm from Gloucester county , pretty south
Hunterdon county. I'm about 10 minutes from the PA border.
I also got outted as a Philly person by a bartender today bc of how I say water (wood-er)
Or you're one of those /s
😯
Also when anyone gets the chance, I'd love the attendee role on here, pretty please. 🙂
Stelercus is losing his omniscient edge
yeap!
oh, burlington county!
LOL u shoulda said quoffee too
no, I was just packing my suitcase
I have eight hours before I need to go to the airport. should probably sleep?
Yes
Sleep Gooooood
*proceeds to stay up..*
aren't you at least already there?
What is this “sleep” thing that you speak of?
Yes I am.
I needed time to see the birds
(If you're able to visit: the National Aviary is an absolute delight: https://www.aviary.org/ )
👁️
Are you sure? I heard it was for the birds.
Hmmm... Fair point.
Might just have to visit again this week to double check..
Ah, that looks awesome!
It is! The staff are all really knowledgeable and happy to chat about the birds, habitats, and other things. If you have a gap in the schedule to fill, I highly recommend it! (Granted, the hours conflict with the conference a bit..)
I'll think about it. Maybe tomorrow afternoon.
I only have my tutorial planned in the morning
It's such a neat tutorial topic! I wish I could be in 10 places at once!
We'll have to grab @tacit jetty and have a lunch or dinner at some point too!
Yeah, that would be great
If only corporate would pay for the tutorials. So many I want to take.
(For anyone interested in a really neat subject presented by a neat guy: https://us.pycon.org/2025/schedule/presentation/60/ )
When is your thing?
Looks like saturday at 2:30: https://us.pycon.org/2025/schedule/presentation/16/
Event sourcing and homemade IoT seems like an awesome project to me
I’ll be in transit. Hopefully nearing the PA state line.
That's a surprise, tutorials are such great value for their training
I totally agree. My manager agrees. The expense folks don’t.
There's always a relevant xkcd
I've put it in my calendar
I'm going to try and get some sleep. Maybe my body and mind will remember that sleep's a thing that they can do.
there really is.
The other talks and the charlas in the same timeslot are also amazing
I should tune out for the night as well
G’night all! See y’all tomorrow!
Possibly a dumb question but is there a conference schedule app?
Android or iPhone?
can i get the attendee role :3
Well, I'm here! For a slightly out of the city center definition of "here", mind; a friend got a work-paid short term rental about 10 minutes drive out.
Not ideal, but also saved me $2000 on hotel 😄
Hi everyone 👋 Will the pycon talks be uploaded to YT for later viewing ?
Yes. All the talks, charlas, lightning talks, and plenary sessions will be uploaded to YouTube.
Summits, hatchery events, open spaces, etc. will not.
How does this role get used? Especially if it grants any channels I'd like it also.
I'm a recent transplant to Pittsburgh but have been a local for a few years. Feel free to tag me for recs or if folks need help navigating the prt
Attendee role please!
It's purely cosmetic. Are you attending?
I sure am!
Cool
I'm in the TSA line rn
Have a safe flight.
I'm leaving from national airport in DC, so I just need to watch out for helicopters
It should be smooth sailing once we're out of the airports airspace
I’m scared to fly right now so I’m driving from Columbia, MD.
I think you're still more likely to be in a car accident
Maryland drivers and all that.
Yeah. I almost get run over by Marylanders pretty often
Pretty sure they're agents of a foreign adversary to destabilize the capital
I’m pretty sure the executive branch already has that covered.
And here I was holding myself back from making political jokes
I have clearly misread the vibe up in here, lol
You'll find that the python community is "woke".
I figured that if a moderator was making one it was fine.
Good heavens! Even knowing being woke brings planes out of the sky? Clutches pearls
With my luck it’ll bring his plane down on my car!
Time to start driving! See y’all this afternoon!
Statistically speaking, this will happen now that you've spoken it into the world. Safe driving!
I thought the 5 hour drive would be better but now I'm regretting it
Erm, if you're sailing, I think you're in the wrong port.
kelly o’s diner about a mile from the convention center has really good pancakes
There's a lot of great food & drink to be had in the Strip District, around there! A great direction for for folks to head of you want a moderate/long walk (i.e. around half an hour) to a place to eat.
I'm doing my company a favor by waiting for the bus. I got a bit unlucky--26 minute wait
I saw Uber prices and it felt excessive
Would anyone maybe be up to go to the National Aviary sometime today? It's about a half hour walk from the conference center, across the river.
I might be up for it--it depends on when I can check in at the hotel, convention, etc.
The airport bus doesn't have a baggage rack oof
How much for you
Uber 1 way for me is $14
It was going to be like $60
My Uber from my home to the airport was 14. I'm talking about airport to city center.
I live pretty close to the airport in my city. I only ubered because I knew it would be cheap and I didn't want to walk to the metro with my suitcase
Very exciting. Flight is later today. I’ll be in for tonight (but after the days conf ends sadly). And fully in all of tomorrow!
Any things happening in the area tonight?
Halfway done. I forgot how much energy this costs 😅
Nice!
does anyone know where i can post to find feedback on a code i wrote? its not that complex
I'll likely be hanging out in the Westin lobby for many hours teaching folks to play my favorite card came (Cabo) and chatting. There were over a dozen PyCon folks in the lobby from 8pm until about midnight last night.
The Westin has the best lobby of the official hotels and it's the closest (connected to the convention center via a walkway). I hung out there a lot last year even though I was staying in a different hotel.
Sounds good! I’ll likely be there!
Should be there myself (the Westin that is). 🙂
On the train now, should be there around 8.
Time for some podcasts and side projects.
Omg, Guido is nearby
But I have to act normal
I am about 70 miles away
But he's talking to Pablo and I actually have something to talk about with him
wow when did I turn green
I pushed the buttons
I look like a simp waiting to talk to Pablo (people probably think I'm waiting to talk to Guido)
But it's about a PR
Shoulda went there instead of museum of illusions
Can you please push button for me 🥺
You have pressed the buttons and yet my color remains.
Helper priorities 😤
(don't change it, we'll just be special)
was the bot to study coding?
What bot? This is the PyCon channel btw
oh you were there at the same time as me
Yay
i saw that too, when they were talking, what i didn't see was a guy with a popehat and mini popemobile
I'll be wearing the Pope hat at the opening reception
I took a pic of the conference center
damn, bamboozled us
steelercus went undercover
You're mixing up my names
how so
You added an extra e.
Steele is my real name
steele went undercover and bamboozled us
Opening ceremony is at 5 right? How long do the talks go?
What if you work for more than 1 company 🤔
It's usually prohibited and you'll probably be terminated from the job.
My flight has been delayed so much
Well, not the worst amount. I’m still getting there tonight just fine
hey there folks one of my coworkers is looking for info on the icon run club and we can’t find pointers to it on the website. Anyone have any thoughts?
Run Club for #PyConUS is back. Leisurely 5km along the river. All abilities welcome. Stretch your legs and meet new people! Great way to start the day ☀️
- Thursday 7:30am
- Saturday 7:30am
Both times we’ll start at the East Lobby entrance to the conference center on 10th St
I just landed! Gotta drop my stuff off first. But yes!
the spanish python folks will go out tonight, maybe you can join
(not me, working on my talk)
I don't speak Spanish
plenty of them speak english
but you might feel left out when everyone naturally ends up speaking spanish and chisme
I think that's what's more likely to happen, and (unlike the British empire) I wouldn't feel comfortable asking people to speak English for my enjoyment.
Worst case, if nothing is figured out, I guess I’ll see what’s up at Westin
@sharp token matt
food related? 👀
For you locals and folks who've been here before: any recommendations for a place that's open late-ish where one could tap away on their laptop while enjoying coffee/tea/other beverages? I'm lodging a couple blocks west of convention center.
Probably. I might go to the primantis in the strip
Want to go with me?
sure, that sounds fun
We'll probably see other PyCon people there.
I'll meet you at the lobby of the Westin, then
I’m about 5 minutes from my hotel. It’s sadly not Westin. Anyways, can I join yall?
Train's due to arrive in another hour 😦
my car is parked in the convention center garage
can I just leave it there and eat you think
I'm fine with waiting.
Do they say when you have to be out? Is it like 11?
I can't imagine that "no overnight parking" means "out before 8"
5-11 "except for special events"
I imagine this qualifies?
(also no way they'd close for the weekend like the site says)
they said it's event parking today
So, a question from an ignorant foreigner: How much would you tip the cleaning staff at a hotel?
But is it a special event?
You don't
It's unusual to tip hotel staff in the US, actually
I've never heard anyone suggest this
Ah, okay. The internet gives me conflicting advice.
Must have been from hotel cleaning staff
I mean they'll accept a tip, maybe...
You're only "required" to pay wait staff at full service restaurants, or bartenders.
👀
Dripping things off now. 10 minute walk to Westin. So let’s say 15 total till there
Important question; is jay walking acceptable/ expected in this city?
yes
I'm wearing green
I've never tipped hotel service like that. Only food and bc waiters/waitress get below minimum wage
And it's more a social requirement. I know someone who plays games of purposely taking off from the tip for each infraction
It's nasty
Iii would say you should. I've been in the US my whole life. Possible that it's a bit class-bound as a practice, so not super universal. But I was taught to tip cleaning staff at hotels on the order of $20/night you stay. (I think when I was actually taught this it was more like $10 but in my mind this has shifted up as the dollar has inflated)
Anyway in the sorts of hotels you're likely to be staying at they're probably used to a wide array of different behaviours around tipping. So it pretty much comes down to do what moves you. You will probably be in good company in any case
I think the only tipping in a hotel ive seen was in trump plaza Home Alone 2 Lost in New York
Poor Dan Schneider gets shafted
Gosh that movie is gonna' be so confusing to future history dabblers
Thanks for the input. I've also googled some more and got even more conflicting information. I do still have some cash dollars with me from my pycon visit three years ago that I'm probably not going to spend. So, maybe I'll tip anyway
Save it for a restaurant
Or the local vagabond
Ah, yeah, also a good idea. So far, I've mostly seen payment terminals with on-reader tipping screens
Yeah there is some benefit to tipping in cash when you can, driven by employers being obnoxious about releasing non-cash tips to their employees/doing so only very slowly
But by all means save your cash for where it's most useful/better to tip via card than not tip at all/etc.
While tipping cleaning staff is unusual, the job is poorly-paid and is often piece-work (they’re paid by the room; a real mess may cut their pay rate).
We always leave $10.00 at the end of our stay.
We had Uzbek food for dinner tonight here and it was excellent!
Not so great for vegetarians though 🙂 wall-to-wall lamb and dumplings 🙂
Oh neat pycon chat!
no hat? 😩
I put it on and walked to the expo hall and was getting unwanted stares, so I chickened out
If I could just subliminally communicate to everyone in the room "there's someone wearing a pope hat as an inside joke", maybe I'd feel differently
I've had Uyghur food, which from what I understand is fairly similar 👀
I didn't see it and I'm sad
I almost stopped at yaba's Mediterranean today but I just wasn't hungry enough after eating at primanti's
What did you order there? I did a primantis adventure with @supple hawk and @crystal solar
capicola and cheese
I'm a big fan of the fries and slaw on all the sandwiches
See, I want the fries separate
I wanna taste the starches and oil. And slather it with ketchup.
Someone explained to me today, it's a relic of providing lunches, for the workers, that could be eaten with 1 hand
Good morning PyCon! I’m gonna start the day with a shameless plug for my talk, “So You Have a Security Vulnerability, What Now?” this afternoon at 2:30 at the Maintainers Summit. Hope to see you there!
(If you don’t come, that’s OK. Find me around, probably at the PSF booth wearing a Grumpy shirt and a Yankees cap.)
@tacit jetty I got my badge and did change my name on it. Yay.
I wonder if someone who works on the apps can add the links to the summit pages to their schedule entries so people can see what they’re about.
Dang, wish I was at PyCon this year! Sounds like a great time!
The keynote speaker is being hostile to a bunch of companies that sponsor the PSF
He isn't necessarily wrong in his assessment, but I'm surprised this is being platformed here.
I wouldn't be surprised if this keynote isn't posted on YouTube after.
Yes
I was literally just saying that to my friends in Matlab discord
It feels weird and highly political
where is the gen chat?
He's taken a dump on meta as well.
Meta and Google both had employees speak during this same session
Yeah, he crapped on meta too.
I think the growing conclusion might lead more towards, "abstracting responsibility to small adjustments as the responsibility of an algorithm is bad" and "the people in this room, company employees, and individual devs, have the ability to notice these small twiddling movements and that'll help return to a product of value for fair wages."
I don't think it's as heavy of a "google bad meta bad", and a lot more of a, "this is the path that walks away from the good. You're able to change these habits."
Hopefully that's the direction he's going, but he was going full throttle against google and meta at the start of this presentation.
I don't have much good or bad thoughts on what's he saying, his opening just seemed in bad taste. Like "I'd have to be an alcoholic to work at meta"
(and I'm not shilling those companies. It's just ironic that he'd eviscerate PSF sponsors at the PSF event.)
I think they knew what they were getting into when they booked him.
I’m pretty sure it was planned and they knew exactly what he was going to talk about.
I’m also pretty sure the order of the sponsors was deliberate.
Seems too on the nose to not be
For those who don't already know, Google Microsoft laid off their cpython teams recently, including the faster cpython team.
I mean the moral of the story here is that there are natural pressures on companies to do what they do.
And there are things that can be done by consumers and in policy to reign them in.
Microsoft
There's a lot of value in noticing that the sponsor isn't just a person that has a product they push to the audience, but, at an event like this it's an opportunity for the sponsor to return to their company and say, "This community has these needs, and the behavior we have is alienating them."
not everyone at these companies wants what their CEO is choosing to do, and there is value in noting that this gives those folks more sway to push back against bad polity
Microsoft* laid off that team
Yeah mark Shannon and 2 other core devs on it got axed, big shame
Ty for corrections
Solid time to hire an amazing team of CPython devs who are incredibly experience and capable
There were layoffs at MS yesterday and 3 #Python core devs from the Faster CPython team were caught in them. If you know of any jobs, please send them their way (they kind of know Python, CPython, and its internals well 😉):
Eric Snow: linkedin.com/in/ericsnowcurren…
Irit Katriel: linkedin.com/in/irit-katriel/
Mark Shannon: linkedin.com/in/mark-shannon-b…
225
lol you beat me to it
The joke he just made about stallions. That was the second joke about... That, I think
It's an interesting talk, but not at all what I would have expected.
Same, stallion joke was funny
(the other one pertained to atlas shrugged. IYKYK)
Here it is
Yeah, I hope folks take this as a key takeaway too.
The Faster CPython team got closed. But there's a lot of good that the initiative created, and there's a lot of good it'll continue to feed into the python ecosystem as a result of Microsoft taking a chance and supporting it.
But, it isn't a thing that is, "Company is perfect because they did a good thing." Company did a good thing and that's good, and has a lot of good impact. But the good that Python (or any programming infrastructure/team/language/tech) offers back to a company is something that the the community should heavily point out. Because it's easy to say these devs don't add value past a threshold, or easy to say these conferences aren't worth sponsoring.
But they're key and valuable because there's so much community built infrastructure that makes it easy for a company to make a "thing", whatever it is.
And a room of folks all uniformly acknowledging that it feels weird and bad to have so much open source code that lets big companies sell products, and impact our lives at such a focused level, hopefully will make it easier for the employees at the companies to voice and articulate why the twiddling growth is something to push back on
I'm now at the undoable notebook talk
Contribute to psf/pycon-us-mobile development by creating an account on GitHub.
I'm so confused where's hall A,I want to see the pyarrow pandas talk
on it already
it's actually ballroom A. it's on the third floor
That’s not confusing at all
I met some others who were confused as well. There's a conference map in the app. It does help.
Only a little. Maybe should have used other identifying words? Like shapes? Idk
Yes I finally noticed that distinction, thank you
It's purely a lack of me not paying attention to the leading word and only looking at the letter
Could we pin this?
If you want to learn about team programming,
I'm hosting an open space for Ensemble Coding. Friday at 6pm in room 309.
I wonder how this presentation will age. While arrow is great. Numpy 2.0 does have native Unicode string support. Right now pyarrow is only used for strings in pandas. I'd be curious to know what pandas dev does long term with numpy 2.0 string support
Arrow is a large dependency and I've read the pandas dev criticizing the use bc of that
I can't, but it's also not complete. I can't make scrolling screenshots on this temporary phone. There's another level with the quiet room and summits/sprints rooms.
Floor plan for PyCon US 2025:
@wheat inlet is this the right map?
Yeah
I'll pin it then
(I'm not at pycon though so ping me if it's wrong)
We are looking for more volunteers if you are attending and interested:
Shared this on Mastodon and Bluesky.
can i volunter
what is pcon about?
Pycon is a conference. The US PyCon is going on now in Pittsburgh.
Can I join the mettint
Meeting
It's a physical conference, I don't believe there is a virtual meetup for it?
@frozen relic is Greg here this year?
Alright, I've been looking forward to this talk.
I'm in an open space that's good and it's not winding down
To second this, I volunteered this morning (hosting a series of talks) and it was a lovely experience! Delightful to step into some of the backstage work that keeps things running smoothly. Sign up, y'all, especially if you haven't at past PyCons!
Nope, not this year
I'm at the Typing Summit. Carl from the Astral team is introducing Ty.
(Room is in a bit of overflow tho)
Let us know how that goes
I like types
Previous to this we had Jukka who works on mypyc.
Anyway, listening 🦻
He showed one thing ty does that's quite interesting, first class intersection types.
The type checker in this example infers that the @final class Other cannot have a subclass that might have an x method, so it determines that the if hasattr(obj, "x"): condition completely removes the possibility that obj could be an Other instance at all. And therefore, it knows that the x attr (of this WithX instance) is an int.
Time to get off the conf WiFi
If you can guess my ssid, you can have creds
https://us.pycon.org/2025/volunteer/volunteering/
If your first day of PyCon US 2025 has been amazing, and you want to enjoy it more, consider signing up to volunteer!
It's a great way to have extra time to talk with speakers, help out with organizers, and help the conference run smoothly.
anyone doing outdoor dining?
in general, yes and the Strip is great for that! today I'll be at the Astral happy hour which looks like is at capacity, but I'll probably be trying to find a group every day for dinner
Any other end of the day events?
Board games at the Westin at 9ish.
Where's this listed? 👀
#PyConUS #boardgames tonight at the Weston hotel lobby starting at ~9pm. Come play, bring games, or check out all the fun ones folks have brought! @treyhunner
@davidism
really enjoying the crowd so far, everyone is very social and i definitely feel like i'm with the right people with the way everyone reacted to cory doctrow's talk
Which reactions in particular?
(I largely agree with his points about vendor lockin and platform decay, but it still felt weird for the context.)
I am so sad. My day is ruined.
Joshie and I walked all the way there. The sign says that they're closed for a few weeks
I walked by that sign yesterday and took a picture, but I didn't make the connection that that's where we were going.
:incoming_envelope: :ok_hand: applied timeout to @ancient burrow until <t:1747446457:f> (10 minutes) (reason: attachments spam - sent 10 attachments).

!unmute 186344247081828352
:incoming_envelope: :ok_hand: pardoned infraction timeout for @ancient burrow.
Our bot doesn't like people posting lots of images at once
i mean, people seem to generally be on board with him. i went to an open space that ended up largely being a discussion about tech vs late stage capitalism and it was a really cool chat
had some similar chats over lunch too (among other topics), i'd say the crowd is definitely my speed. everyone seems quite cool overall, I haven't been in a single convo so far where anyone's voice seemed to get minimized or devalued. I'm glad I'm here for my first conference
Yeah PyCon is great
Found at the Andy Warhol Museum near PyCon:
The Python / Beautiful Soup exhibit.
Long shot but was anyone in Ballroom BC yesterday right after lunch and happened to take photos during my talk, A11y Need is Love (But Accessible Documentation Helps Too)?
Would love to have a few if you caught any! Thanks in advance! :D
I know there were some on Mastodon and Bluesky.
Thanks, I’ll try to find them!
Since I’m too lazy to type it in again…
For anyone who enjoyed any of the notebook talks yesterday, marimo is hosting an open space on reproducible and reusable notebooks today at noon! Come chat with marimo team (and get a free hat!) Also tomorrow at 10am. Room 315 both days.
Anyone notice how late breakfast was out yesterday? Curious whether I've likely missed it if I show up just after 9.
It took some time for breakfast to be cleared away yesterday. There will likely be a last table left for a few minutes yet
Is Fay Shaw who spoke on traffic safety at lightning talks this morning on mastodon? I missed the session but am super interested in the topic so wondering where to subscribe to this person's newsletter
I showed up at 9:15 today and successfully got breakfast
Same
Slides about ty (for the ty open space)
Yoooo
I want some
Oh, I missed that one! I will watch it on YouTube!
Left the booth for a break but I’ll be back in a bit.
Lightning talks are on youtube eventually
Yes, emphasis on the eventually
Is that 3:15 talk on exception groups and stuff an old listing since it's stuff from 3.11?
Or is that talk really happening
Not that it's a problem if it is, just wouldn't expect a talk for new features of 3.11
Got them!
I would, specially since lots of people aren’t aware of this feature
Sometimes talks are there to remind people that features exist
i'm surprised there's someone giving USBs at pycon, my mama always told me never to accept USBs from strangers
That's his US broke Iran's nuclear enrichment facility iirc
(context: Anaconda is giving away USBs in their booth)
I thought it was a charger
Maybe they want to know if your company is breaking their new TOS
the lady who offered it to me said it was a USB
but regardless, still an attack vector, though for your phone now
She probably meant USB phone charger?
Shrugs

Anyone walking to lunch, was thinking The Eagle for a beer and food
If she works in a non technical role, she might use "USB" more generically than you'd expect
I've moved
There's a floating bar heading past us.
Excellent
She’s technical
What's a USB on its own?
A flash drive, I guess?
personally I'd assume "a USB" means a cable or a port, not a device using USB
Oh could be a battery could be a mass storage device
PyData Pittsburgh Happy Hour tonight at 6:30. Just down the street in the strip district.
After enjoying an excellent afternoon imbibing deep Python wisdom from the [Hometown Heroes at our PyCon Hatchery Event,](https://www.meetup.com/pydata-pittsburgh/events/30
Me too, but I figured from context that we're specifically not talking about that.
Thanks for sharing!
Our man Keith is speaking!!!
are there any happy hours/similar tonight? trying to figure out what i'm doing after things wrap up today!
There's one.
May be others, of course
ah if only i could read lmao. thanks!
@tacit jetty r u wearing a pope cap or is someone in hall c wearing a banana suite?
Found at the PSF sticker booth if anyone lost this!
It looks like you can still get tickets for the pyladies auction
There's also this
Anyone else know what's going on tonight?
There is a rock climbing open space going out to a climbing place
I'll probably check out PyData
What's the deal with the auction?
Is it like a Rafal off?
It's really great. It's a dinner and charity auction where you bid on items that go to supporting pyladies
Even if you don't bid on anything, it's still a lot of fun
It’s an amazingly fun evening raising money for PyLadies. Some great stuff will be auctioned off including the video game cabinet that Capital One had in their booth which they said they will ship anywhere in the US.
Where do you buy the ticket, in lightning talks atm
Can I just buy it on my phone?
Okay, I'm convinced, I got a ticket
If it’s not available you can come up to Ballroom A and ask one of the staff at the door. I bought mine at the door last year.
Track me down and say Hi. I’ll be in a pink and white checkered button down.
Ok cuz
👀 which gym?
You can check at the door or maybe Ee will be in the staff room.
Sorry - super duper late
Naw I walked up. No way to do it lol
Sold out
Yeah, I was told at the door, look at ur account and add to it
I bought a ticket 20 minutes ago
Probably got the last one, NBD
Yep
Well if I can’t go to auction; who is going to the pydata happy hour?
thinking about it!
I’m going to go walk over there now
Im going with my brother and I know another attendee who is there 🙂
it definitely seems like more of a general pycon meet, we're kinda all just self organizing by pycon badges lol
Yea …
I too would like to know
Strip district definitely usually has spots, just depends how busy...
Bout to drive over now and give it a go
but maybe I'll just walk
I'm walking
15 min walk, not bad, but I'll give it a shot
sounds good. I'm heading towards the entrance of the parking garage
Hmm, actually looks busy. I'll hoof it.
Ok, not sure where that is. I'm on penn Ave across from Westin
I'm in a green stripe shirt with grey/black curly hair blue backpack
I'm walking out the main exit by the parking garage
define "across from Westin"
Penn and tenth
We are literally on the corner of Penn Ave and 10th
Main intersection
I wore it
The hat looks better when you're looking at it straight on. I don't, though.
I'm sitting next to the pope at the auction
Does anyone know if Alvaro Duran made available his slides for his talk "Building a NoGIL Load Balancer in 30 minutes"?
I'm not sure yet, but his repo for the code demonstrating it is here:
https://github.com/ohduran/building-a-nogil-load-balancer
thanks much!
The food at the pyladies auction was... Uninspired
Still a good number of Pycon folks hanging out at Aslin brewing
In addition to good beer and bar food they have an arcade
I'll probably head there in a bit
Also a reasonable collection of board games (I.e. ticket to ride, codenames, etc)
I just got to Aslan
i like when python is used as a way to deterministically represent logic (even simple logic) for human readers, really highlights the 'language' part of a programming language
Sure but it's a syntax error to use raise like that
yeah ok that's true lmao
then again is language fusion not uncommon in groups of people who are bilingual with the same two languages 🧐
U weren't wearing the pop hat were you
I left at like 8:56
Shame, next year perhaps
I was
Though I left before that. I wasn't really vibing
Though the pyladies auction has been sold out in other years I attended, so I'm glad I gave it a try, I guess
I meant at aslans
Oh. I don't wear it outside.
I got it from an actual clerical clothing store.
WTH happens when the bid is 100 exactly
i mean it doesn't matter, the walrus line is a syntaxerror by itself
I'd like to say the Auctioneer becomes a confused walrus.
at least they tried. I think chat gippity would do a lot better, so it does seem manual
But why a walrus???
viewer = confused
You don’t go to the auction for the food. You go to see it end with a lot that started as the auctioneer’s sharpie and had contributions from tons of people in the room sell for $2100 at the end of the night to meet the evening’s fundraising goal.
PSA - there seems to be MANY road closures around the convention center this morning
so it would seem. not really sure how to get by
just made it 😬
Are they closed for walking too? Realize no museums are open Sunday. So I'm gonna risk hanging around PyCon before going to air port
I had to take a very long detour
seems you can walk through
For driving?
ya
I didn't know we had a channel for PyConUS 😮
In case someone sees me, I'm carrying a couple of shiny Python Stickers (Photo from reference of another event https://bsky.app/profile/cmaureir.bsky.social/post/3lh4d4xqsxs2u )
Hey #python people 🐍 in case you are attending #FOSDEM and want a shiny✨️ Python sticker, you can find me around! I will be also in the @qt-project.org booth in building K, first floor.
has anyone figured out the secret sticker game yet
There was an open space about it yesterday. If you figure it out, please post it here with spoilers
For those who don't know, someone set up a mystery thing here at pycon
I'm gonna be hanging out at bills burger and bar until like 1230. Gonna try to squeeze in 2 talks before going to air port
If anyone wants lunch
is there anyone at the conf center atm?
is there any chance you could check if tshirts are still available for sale?
I'm talking to some people at lunch but I'll check on my way out
thanks!
There yeah go
I just spoke to someone who preordered one, but they didn't know they had to pick it up before today 😬
I hate tshirts anyway but I could have just kept it in the closet
That's homophobic
Wut mate
I'm being silly.
I know
Keeping something in a closet
😉
The real question is, if my flight leaves at 4:19 do I try to squeeze in the 1:45 pedantic talk or leave after this no gil meta talk
I bought a leftover shirt last year, and all they had left were fitted shirts. So I gotta keep going on chest day
Sounds like good motivation
200 IQ play
TFW I just went up the escalator for a talk in hall C.
🤔 Ends at 2:15
Get outside 2:25ish maybe
20 minute Uber/Lyft (assuming the PIT airport)
Get there by 2:45-3pm
Flights tend to board 30 minutes early, so 3:50ish
Should be fine?
So youre accountable if I'm late right?
Absolutely not, I'm miles away.
O7
Time dilation and such
So light years away
The worst that could happen is a giant meteor strikes the earth obliterating all life as we know it
Well at least I'll die tipsy with a full stomach
I'm still in town tonight, if anyone wants to do anything
RIP
Yes
Amazing advice
anyone know who's running the unofficial intro to sprints open space? I was thinking of doing the same and would love to help/coordinate/whatever
I’ve winged it like that many times around the world, it’s a special skill Iat this point
Yeah I mean I think I'll be fine, short of some catastrophic traffic
There’s an Intro to lightsaber thing going on apparently, but I haven’t been able to find out where it is reee
"garden outside 315" according to open spaces schedule
Looks like it conflicts with zanies talk, decisions decisions
Jamie is running it. Not sure where.
@umbral quail where zanie talk? I don’t see it on the board
I remember something about it being at 2:30 🕝
2:30, yes, Ballroom A (across from like room 301) https://us.pycon.org/2025/schedule/presentation/32/
Thanks!
The tv board by the lounge doesn’t show this
I thought that one just shows open spaces not talks?
Hmmm, multiple of us just now were thinking that it showed all events today, but makes sense
a MongoDB sponsor slide showing up right after a duckdb talk is finished is just
I've been struggling to stay awake since PyCon started. Today I missed all the breakfast coffee, so I went to Starbucks.
Today I feel completely awake.
The conference center coffee must be weak.
The PYES booth has these coffee candies that have kept me awake through it lol
Nice
Conference coffee is definitely weak. I paid for the snack bar coffee after they took down the carafes and I'm still tired
which Jamie / how do I get in touch with them?
also do you know if anyone is going to announce on the main stage at closing that a) intro to sprints is indeed happening and b) people running sprints are invited to pitch their sprints?
Right now she’s finishing up the lightsaber class outside 315.
Time for the finale
6:00 in room 310
Probably. I was drinking a red bull before coming and then doing a conference coffee
Interesting.
I've never had an energy drink.
I find that more interesting
For as much coffee as I drink, I don't need or want it
I used to have a caffeine addiction. Double shot upon wake up, then an energy drink or cold brew in the drive to work. Then coffee at noon
I've cut back substantially I believe
Waaaaaa
x2
Here's a link-dump from the dotfiles open space session: I surely missed stuff, but there's a lot here. https://dmv.community/@akuchling/114530392077471299
👋 pittsburgh
There is an open space grabbing dinner. I am thinking of joining them
PLAN: We're headed to this location, leaving the venue at 5.30pm:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/YGsFxnP5bkgC6p7y5
Meeting 5.20—5.30pm outside Hall B (closing talk), and leave 5.30 from the venue to the location!
@supple hawk @dim sage is this the same thing?
Cool. I need to switch shoes though
don't do shoes at all, you can do it, i believe in you
I guess I can do that during the awards
Do they intend the music to come back during these presentations?
Closing ceremonies underway!
I guess that means “come to have mullie’s [sic] ice cream with Cheuk” will be later than 5-6
Open space on Event sourcing with Chris May. Room 315
Ah. shoot, would have loved to join, but I'm already at the gate.
reminder: Intro to Sprints (what are sprints? how do I contribute to a project? etc.) in 310-311 in 15 minutes!
But the coffee ice cream is amazing!
@dim sage are you even here?
i got kidnapped by the spanish community
we're at aslin beer co
you literally promised you'd be at my talk with your pope hat
@tacit jetty how long will you be there?
Idk
will go if you're still there
I'm still here but I'm thinking of heading back towards downtown
Which one is you?
I'm wearing green.
ah jeez.. they're not doing coffee for the sprints in the morning, are they
There's a coffee shop at the corner of the convention center as if you were going to Aslin Beer Co, Heinz History Center etc. It's Lavazza if I remember right
la prima - it’s pretty good! although a bit of a walk
I’m going to get breakfast at Pamela’s P&G diner before the sprints I think
oh no they don’t open until 8:00 😢
Oh you're talking about pamelas
La prima closes obnoxiously early.
it wouldn’t be a long walk to la prima but the convention center is so huge and the layout forces you to snake back and forth through it to get in or out
Yeah, it's annoying
This PIT security system is strange. So far, I’m still flying through it. But I can see this backing up easily. But what a strange security
If you are not pre checked; you have to walk outside to a separate building for security. Idk what they are doing
Also these bins where you put your stuff in, have ads!?!?!
@brass75 @tacit jetty
It's normally not like that @supple hawk . I flew out an hour ago, I have never seen the PreCheck line like that. Normally regular folks will also get in the same way. Perhaps it's due to the new terminal or something?
I was pretty stressed about making the flight, but the alternate terminal may have been faster than Precheck today. 10-15 min max.
That alternate gate had been used rarely in the past when the terminal is very busy
My security check was pretty long yesterday, but not too bad. I was in line maybe 15 minutes? Even without realid, it just some extra TSA groping
I also dont fly much at all so maybe 15 minutes is nothing, lol
It depends. An airport that has their stuff together, is like 5 minutes. But yea, 15 minutes is pretty normal. An hour is a long security line imo. But idk what the floor of that is
Morning! Anyone knows if there is breakfast at the sprints?
Haven't seen any breakfast so far
Thanks!
Pro tip: if you're by the ballrooms there are elevators which take you straight back out to 10th St, which eliminates a lot of walking.
Good call heading out to see the Incline while you're in town! It's a pretty unusual bit of public transit (although funiculars used to be much more common)
Some of us that are still here are going to the Pirates game this evening. LMK if you’re interested.
I’m so mad I’m not able to go haha
My plane missed the takeoff time, so we have to wait on the tarmac for 45 minutes.
@brittle lily I was thinking about your talk--those microcontrollers don't have an OS on them. what actually is Python interfacing with?
Is there anyone saying in the embassy suites? sorted!
I didn’t realise Westin doesn’t have coin laundry.
Asking for a spare room card to use embassy’s tonight
Anyone fancy a lunch visit to the north to visit a museum or the aviary for lunch?
since Keith didn't answer, I'll take a swing at this: when you're using MicroPython or CircuitPython, there is an interpreter that runs your program, and that interpreter's standard library includes facilities for talking to hardware, in much the same way as CPython's standard library includes facilities for talking to an OS kernel.
Makes sense, though I have a hard time wrapping my head around what that looks like
One way of thinking about this is that an OS kernel is "just" a piece of (native) code, and so is Python (both Linux and CPython are written in C). The difference is that the kernel runs in a processor mode where it has unrestricted access to talk to hardware, change memory mappings, etc., and normal software does not. But in theory there's no reason you can't give a normal program that level of access. The only thing the kernel doesn't have is the ability to make system calls, i.e. requests for the kernel to do things, because it's the kernel itself and that wouldn't make sense. So as long as you change all that code to be ordinary function calls to do whatever is appropriate (which, on a microcontroller, is probably not a lot of code that needs to be filled in), you can run a normal program with full CPU privileges, as if it were a kernel.
(I assume these microcontrollers probably do not have the two processor modes at all, or system call facilities, you can mentally model them as general-purpose CPUs that can only run kernels.)
You might also enjoy this https://lwn.net/Articles/692638/ (there's probably a video of the talks on YouTube)
At last year's PyCon in Montréal, Josh Triplett introduced the work he and others have done to [...]
which is about doing this work with actual CPython (not MicroPython/CircuitPython) on a general-purpose CPU
I imagine these processors have a RTOS running.
Real time operating systems. Many have the capability built in directly
Micro Python probably goes through that. An RTOS isnt free. It's not as fast to access hardware interrupts directly but it's much faster than a general purpose OS
they do not, at least not by default - though you probably could run one if you wanted to, instead of MicroPython or CircuitPython.
and no - these devices boot directly into a micropython interpreter that you flash onto the device.
i've headed back to the hotel for probably the last time this pycon (wanted to beat the rain.. but now it looks like it's calmed down anyway, but I have an early trip back and could probably use the time to decompress) and i just want to thank everyone for making it such a fun first conference! i learned a ton, met really great people, and came away way more engaged with OSS and the python ecosystem than i started. the open spaces and sprints were definitely the coolest parts for me. i'm so glad i went and i hope to be back next year!
it was fun chatting with you at the Sprints!
likewise, was great meeting you! Sorry I couldn't do more on your repos, i still have them up & still want to see if i can work out a few things
sarah's new issue on memray looked really good for getting into building wheels which i've been meaning to learn about anyway (never had to do it before)
the fix for that one should look almost exactly like https://github.com/bloomberg/pystack/pull/236, but you can definitely learn about wheels while testing it! For testing the fix, you'd need Memray's build dependencies installed (which you can get from using GitHub Codespaces in the browser, or by manually installing them or using the Dockerfile in the repo if you prefer), and then doing pip install build into a virtual env, and then running python -m build --wheel .
That'll pop out a dist/*.whl file. A wheel is just a zip file in a particular format, so you can check what files are in it using zipinfo dist/*.whl - you'd want to build a wheel, list its contents, apply the fix, build a new wheel, list its contents, and then compare the two lists. The only differences should be that the .pyx file and the memray/_memray directory are dropped, and everything else is kept
if you bump into any problems with it, feel free to shoot me a DM - though I'll be camping this weekend and might not have a ton of availability to help, but I'll try if I can! 🙂
ooo that's fantastic info 🤩 thank you! This is exactly why the sprints have been such a great time for me. and can do, no worries if you're busy camping, I hope you have a fun time!
Micro Python and circuit python can access hardware interrupts?
Like say the hardware interrupt that would fire when the adc reads. Or when a hardware timer goes off?
Basically the ISRs for various peripherals
Is it actually an interpreter?
... yes...
I was more getting at, are these things themselves the RTOS with some custom version of python running on it .
But doesn't seem it
micropython isn't an RTOS, no. It's not an OS at all, in the sense that it doesn't have a userland at all. There's only one process running on the machine, and it is the interpreter, and it's interpreting whatever script you told it to interpret
You have to flash the script to run with micro Python each time?
Or is there a way change what script its running, say over uart or i2c?
depends on the device. Most of Adafruit's CircuitPython devices appear as USB mass storage devices if you connect them to a Windows/Mac/Linux machine, and you just drag and drop your script there, and then reboot the device by pushing a button
I'm probably gonna buy one. All my experience is on MSPs and stm boards
CircuitPython is a nicely polished fork of MicroPython maintained by the Adafruit folks, and specifically set up with the goal of user-friendliness. MicroPython supports a wider range of hardware, but CircuitPython is more likely to Just Work
and the folks in the Adafruit discord server are incredibly helpful 🙂
are we excluding all *.pyx or just the directory plus _memray.pyx?
Ah, all the .pyx
@signal condor Dinner at the hotel bar for me too tonight. Safe travels!
same wishes for you!
Now that the talks days are behind us, which talk or talks did you enjoy the most? What did you learn that you want tosm share? Which talks should we watch once they're released on YouTube?
I found the gpu gotcha talk and the follow up by nvidia to be very informative
Well, the keynote about burnout is a good thing to watch if you're currently experiencing that. (This was Lynn Root's.)
Peter Sobot's Working with Audio in Python (a long plug for the package pedalboard) was so slickly presented I would recommend it even if you aren't particularly interested in audio processing.
Hyneks talk was very entertaining, dealing with development pressure
several more talks just got uploaded: https://www.youtube.com/@PyConUS/videos
