Hi guys! I’m currently on my second level of mandarin and I’m worried. We’re at point where my teacher is telling me and my classmates that we need to learn hanzi and not be so dependent to pinyin. But my last teachers didn’t give too much focus to hanzi. So now I’m with this new teacher because I don’t recognize much characters.

ANY TIPS PLS?

Practice using the Hanzi more.

use it in place of where you used to use pinyin

if you practice writing it will help get you more familiar with the characters

hi! i realize it's been a while but i'd like to suggest something! tbh it's really hard to let go of pinyin but just cut yourself off cold turkey. stop using pinyin unless it's as a pronunciation tool/typing tool. i realize that sounds really hard (and it is) but that's the best way to ensure efficient future language learning. i'd recommend consuming some form of children's media (like cartoons and/or books) and using a chinese dictionary to learn the meanings. it'll be slow and hard at first but soooo worth it later on i promise. sorry this is super random and sudden haha

It gets easier the more you practise it 🙂

Downloading Chinese IME helps. So when you type in “ni hao”, it’ll convert to 你好, and the more you do this, the more your brain will (hopefully) make the association.
