On one hand, the almost comedic levels of bad for the goblin camp kind of disgusted me—like, you didn’t have to show me they’re cooking a dead dwarf to eat.
On the other hand, I was kind of grateful. I like having a clear and obvious enemy to fight as a good guy and there’s been like a decade of dnd players going “🥺 but what my goblin was good” and wizards of the coast bending to their whims to the point it made having any villains hard. Orc, drow, gnoll, troll, and so on. Everyone had to be redeemable despite books and series and tons of lore otherwise.
So I liked being able to clear the entire camp with no guilt.

And on Baron von Evil's end, he LOVES grilled dwarf and it gives him a motivation boost

I also was a fan of the incurable tadpole. It’s a great, TTRPG reasoning for the party to stay together. You’re all looking for a cure. If they give it to you in Act 1, there’s no reason for your group to stay together at all

funnily enough this game's story starting point is almost exactly the same as Divinity Original Sin 2's

you start off as a prisoner on a ship with a collar around your neck that will kill you if you take it off

there's also an elf rogue who has been tormented by someone for a long time and is looking for a way to finally be free of their tormentor

I've heard that kind of story pressure called the "ticking time bomb", very useful

Tyranny has an interesting spin on that mechanic too. You work as the evil guy who reads the edicts of the evil super overlord

and those will have disastrous consequences if not fulfilled

like, 'you will resolve the conflict between x and y before sunday or i will make it rain forever fire on that region'

okay so the main problem i have with this is that you seem to be misunderstanding what people actually want out of these changes. i don't think anyone has been calling out wotc for making villains or whatever, it's about the nature of the villainy. people have realised that actually it might not be a good thing to assign evil to an entire race of creatures, especially not when the evil being assigned so much resembles european stereotypes of indigenous people.

bg3 kinda? sidesteps the problem by having all the evil ppl be a part of one cult and sprinkling a not-evil member of each evil race around the world (i don't think i've met a good goblin though). still ain't great ofc but w/e.

your point abt redemption is bothering me but i can't come up with why. i think it's mostly just that it's two separate issues — the push for redemption arcs in media is unrelated to the push for anti-racism. people don't want goblins "redeemed", they want the racial evil itself excised from their story.

That’s… an interesting way of looking at it. Certainly not the inspiration of every single goblin player I’ve ever encountered—they’ve had racism far from the brain, I can assure you. Maybe the drow and orc ones? But I think you’re losing some strength of your point by overgeneralizing all people into your stance.

The inherent racist design definitely a problem, but not one on the mind of anyone I was referencing.

Aside from that, my point would still stand, no matter the flavor of monster. I’m glad there’s an obvious evil side to fight—I don’t care if they’re colonial white dudes or goblins.

I don’t think all writers intend goblins or orcs to be a racial allegory either—that’s a disservice to Tolkien and many stories I grew up with. And I do prefer having those monsters to fight because of those specific stories.

I'm inferring a bit here given that I know Sol irl and have for his whole life, but my guess is that he's tired of people trying to make evil more palatable. Let evil be actually evil and not “well they are secretly doing it all for a good reason, actually!” Like waving away and minimizing actual harmful, toxic behavior. He also maybe reacting to the rugpull some games do where they try to make you feel bad for engaging with the game on its own terms

It sounds like what Evey is feeling is more wanting representation of goodness. People who help others, who want to show kindness. People do this in real life too. It IS in the game, and the goblin camp is probably the strongest evil you encounter in the first act, so I’m not sure it’s the best example - there are nicer places, and people who are willing to help (the last light inn, the shrooms, some folks at the monastery, etc). Maybe a better example is the druid grove in act 1 because it’s a place where you should see less cynicism. Very few people wanted to help the refugees, and the one guy who did was off somewhere else. The other one druid who tries to help you basically attempts to kill you. The old lady who tries to help you is actually a horrible hag. I was thrown a bit because I thought the game was indicating the imprisoned goblin might be at least helpful, given that how cruel the grove was being to it, but turns out she was just a malevolent cultist too

So I do agree that on the whole the game leans more towards “everyone is selfish and looking out for their own interests" even with most of the good guys. Which is a cynicism that can be exhausting. And you can do both. You can write the evil faction as legit evil, with maybe one or two that aren't sure they like it, and you can have regular folks be the whole range, including really kind and helpful people. The game does have the latter, it just isn't as prevalent. You as the party can definitely be helpful, especially as the game continues and your party starts to gel

The refugee issue is specifically relevant at least in our country currently, and Sol I know your wife works (or has worked) with an organization that helps refugees. We’ve interacted with churches who are doing their darndest to keep ICE’s grubby hands off people. I think just having more of that kind of thing alongside the rest would keep it from being quite so cynical, maybe?

D&D kind of screwed itself over from the beginning with racial alignment. Tolkien did have some of the same issue with orcs (and he talks about this in his letters, he was always uncomfortable with them being an entirely irredeemable race and was constantly reworking them in his lore), but he was definitely still a lot more nuanced than D&D was to start. He has elves and humans who are bad news, and Sam thinks about how the Easterlings they encounter probably are just dudes, not actually evil.

D&D meanwhile has to wrestle with a much more difficult lineage (in addition to WotC being super sus anyway). Fae in the original folktale sense were definitely more evil horrors, and you kind of run into this odd issue where D&D has that leftover inherent “actual monster” alignment which made sense in folktale context, but then making those beings playable and humanlike causes a conflict. It's difficult to have both at the same time, and it’s really easy to end up being racist. I’m pretty sure Sol wasn’t asking for hard racial alignment like that, but more “let the villains be the villains” - can correct me if I’m wrong

I’m enjoying myself quite a lot. It doesn’t feel like a hopeless world to me like a lot of grimdark does, that dark nihilism sort of thing, because you can choose how you act in the game and refuse to be evil (unless you’re Baron Von Evil) and hope for a better solution, a good one. But I can see where Evey is coming from too, and I’ve had similar thoughts in some of the situations

You’re correct, I do not like the hard racial alignments. That was made unclear by my distaste of everyone trying to make the Drizzt character for every evil race, and that snuck in to my argument. That didn’t help.

I’ve triggered the older brother moderation mode—something I’m really sorry for, this has just been a mess of communication on my end.

Monks are actually pretty rough to build already - they’re dependent on STR, DEX, and WIS for their functionality. WIS might be able to be dropped in favor of CHA for some of the Bard abilities and spells? I’d have to play with it more.

monks get REALLY good gear bonuses for unarmored though, and some feats, that let you attack like 1000x times a turn lol

I just bought armor (hidden because it's ugly af) that adds my str mod ON TOP OF the other mods to attack that monk already gives

so that kind of offsets some of the raw stat weirdness imo

plus I'm not really minmaxing, just going with the flow

Mobile and Tavern Brawler yeah - TB (not tuberculosis) lets you use your str mod instead of dex and it does x2 str

so not the best for dex based, but one less stat to worry about
