Alright, so speaking of Game Boy stuff I got a question, and I feel like I've talked about this before but I did a search and came up with squat so I apologize if any of this y'all have heard before:

I've made a bunch of 4-color palettes for use with Game Boy or GB-esque projects and I think I'm at the point that I want to package them up and release them, but.... what do?

I need a good way to show them off, but I can't make a custom image for every single palette (25 total atm). I've got this sample file that I've been using to test the palettes as I go, but I feel weird using screens from existing games? Or am I overthinking that?

What would be the best way to entice you to download these and give them a try? Both in presentation/sell but also deliverability (all as one giant pack? packs of 5 by them? individually?)?

#

Also IDK am I even thinking straight in doing this at all would anyone actually want this or get use out of it?

I like the idea of it but personally can't imagine myself buying a palette

#

maybe that's a thing and I'm just not familiar with it

#

would it work to make a smaller pool of sample images that each get reused a few times? like for 25 palettes, maybe have 5 samples?

#

also what is that game in the top-right I need to know

not for purchase, to be clear! sorry I should have specified that. I just want to put them out there in a pleasing way. If I host them on itch or something I would do a "free but PWYW" sort of scenario just in case folks wanted to do donations but I know this isn't the sort of thing folks would pay for (nor should they, in my case at least)

great aesthetic but horribly obtuse

Think I may have figured out my five samples actually lol

#

Not showing everything just yet but in case anybody needed/wanted a more visual example of what I'm looking at so far

when it comes to trying palettes, i am pretty indiscriminately grabby (i will probably grab these as well) & often don't even look at samples too closely
but that's just me! i think they're definitely helpful to have anyway

One time I wanted to make a program that can display your palette in an image

#

Saw it once for 4 colour palettes, but I couldn't find that site since

#

Would need to involve making a set of images with particular number of colors and then just swapping them

round rune
#

That would be extremely cool to play around with

I’m intrigued by these palette names, I can’t wait to see what they look like 👀

i guess this is slightly off-topic & more of just a fun toy, but pixage FX has this palette quantization thing that works pretty nicely

round rune
#

oooo yeah that's a nice lookin tool

#

such a great portrait too

blazing coral
#

ah thanks! ❤️
there was another bird art challenge last month, but i didn't really have the energy for it this year. so i just made the goldfinch for Day 1

Pixage is a nice little hidden gem. it has some really nice pixel conversion tools as well, even for whole gifs! i think i have an example somewhere i can dig out;;

#

ah found one, so this someone's turtle character that i did a model of:

#

and then i ran it through Pixage:

#

(although typically i have to do a bit of cleanup myself)

#

(oh & here's the actual size: )

Seems like a great thing to mimic stuff like the Donkey Kong Country pipeline

blazing coral
#

yeah it definitely has that vibe, haha
kinda looks like that gameboy color port of DKC

Making some stained-glass frames to use for my previews. The part with the gradient is going to house the fake game screenshots.

Which do y'all like?
White or color-matched text?
And text within the frame? or outside of it?

tropic turret
#

I think I like white text better; is that for the palette name? The stained glass approach is beautiful

blazing coral
#

hmmm i think the left two? for text outside
color i am undecided on, it kinda depends what the screenshot looks like i guess kitten_think
but they're looking good!! 💯

round rune
#

and in a different palette just to help with potential differences

blazing coral
#

oh no worries! ❤️
hmm tricky
aesthetically, i like the colored text
but i assume the white would end up being better for readability? kitten_think
i personally have no trouble reading the colored text, but everyone's different

round rune
#

yeah I think that's what I'm going to eventually bank on is just max contrast so might as well do the white

round rune
#

alright I think this might be the final structure for the product page

#

thanks again to everyone for the help so far!

round rune
#

Was gonna change the title of this but I can't figure out how lol

#

anyways here are the first three mock-ups I'll be using for my palettes. Please let me know any feedback you might have! That’s feedback for both pixel art but also architecture and gameplay too!

also... you know I wanna play all of these now right

#

you've brought sadness upon me

that sounds rad

#

and also a lot more complex to keep track of lol

round rune
#

that's why, in theory (obviously, I haven't coded this, much less playtested anything), it would be simplified poker rules based on just suits, not numbers

#

but that would still mean this is probably a "match 3 for poker players" rather than a "poker for match 3 players" type of game I guess?
