On i686 systems, there are 4 modes of paging. Many other systems also support paging
In PAE paging, you have a table that maps logical addresses to physical addresses. Each segment of this map is called a "page"
Within the page map, the OS will allocate pages for both the OS and application to use
When swapping between applications (threading is done by a ton of context swaps), we can do this:
Save the memory referenced by one of the application A's pages to disk
Load one of application B's pages from the disk
Now the page that previously pointed to Application A's memory points to Application B's memory (:
