It's a catch-22. If you get in as a software engineer, you get access to higher pay / salary bands. It may be worth the wait. NEVER. EVER. go into the gaming industry. It's very cut-throat, pays shit, and it's extremely unstable.
Gaming is terrible – they take advantage of those that basically volunteer their time because it's "in the gaming industry".
Just find work in something boring – like enterprise applications.

I'll be honest again: if you want to be a software engineer you have to basically get the comp. sci degree or some sort of engineering. If you don't, your resume will just be tossed.
People will tell you that you can make it, but it simply makes an already difficult job hunt 10x more difficult.
