(Metro)Platforms in the old game "secretly" were networks. It makes sense. What doesn't make sense is that you still cannot change anything about them. Have them be either drawable or as an upgrade to a train/metro track, preferably the latter.
Im thinking several variants. Island platform, side platform, Spanish solution and side platform with bypass. An option to only have a platform on one side of a track would also be nice although that's kind of a weird concept, maybe for termini. Also, bay platforms for termini as well.
To simplify things a little, the pedestrian tunnels connecting the platforms and entrances could and probably should be automatically generated, that can't be too hard to accomplish, it's just a straight line connection, overlap doesn't really matter if you can't see it now does it? Those that want to go more in depth, a mod could then provide the ability or requirement to draw your own tunnels as well.
This way, you can easily have several platforms going in the direction you need and at a depth/height that makes sense. and as mentioned in the original suggestion: it would also allow for multiple entrances.
Implementing this for overground stations is probably a bit too complex since that would essentially entail an entirely procedural building which, let's face it, would be great, but probably not worth the effort.
Of course the different styles of platforms would indirectly effect the efficiency of a given station for things like changing trains, providing depth (no pun intended) to a very important aspect of city planning that mysteriously is missing entirely from the game.
Honestly. This is a city builder. How come public transport is so incredibly lacking?
