Originally, I had planned on keeping this under wraps until I had more to show, but since Cities Skylines 2 is coming out in a just under two weeks as of this post, I figured that further waiting carried no benefit. Hence, thus begins the official public thread of a project that I've teased only intermittently for nearly three years now. Committing at this point means that I will likely not use CS2 until this project has been completed.

**Short Introduction **
As the project is primarily a blend of Japanese, Taiwanese, and Hong Kong architecture, the name was chosen to reflect values from both Chinese and Japanese culture. From most of the teaser shots, it should also be abundantly clear that this project is primarily focused on rail, particularly high speed rail (HSR).

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project has had... an interesting development history.

Visuals and detailing aside, this project seeks to retain as much operational realism as possible. From the start, Nakayama had been designed with a full shinkansen build in mind. The full-length N700A and 500 series trainsets presented here not only travel sufficient distance to realistically accelerate to and maintain their full speed, they actually carry commuting cims instead of just tourists.

Given the constraints of the game in terms of logistics and mapsize, most HSR builds are mostly just glorified tourist shuttles. This setup comes with two drawbacks: 1) it does not reflect real-world HSR ridership patterns (which often involve "supercommuters" who travel between cities for work and business), and 2) the distance between the urban core and map edge is often too short for bullet trains to reach their full speed, and, even if they do, they likely can only maintain it for a few seconds before they have to stop. This project, designed from the ground up to specifically address these issues, has been the product of at least two years' worth of research, development, and refinement.

I love your project bro! I don't know how possible this is due to technical stuff, but i'd definently be interested in a first person / passenger ride video on the trains!

hot basalt
#

cabride / POV videos are definitely planned in the future.
barring a few exceptions, most rail lines were designed to feature cabrides
the biggest issue right now is a matter of scale. Some of these lines run over 200km long, with trains taking over an hour to complete a full loop. With the level of detail present, there's literally quite a bit of ground to cover.

#

Even the Shinkansen network, which is the shortest, takes around 20min one way (45+ min for a round trip)

hot basalt
#

More pictures coming soon 😉

hot basalt

I didn't even know that 1 hour long train trips were possible with the cs1 map size, but i'd happily watch a video on it with the level of detail you're going for!

hot basalt
# smoky drum Is there a pc on the market that can handle that amount work to calculate

CS1 isn't too taxing on the CPU and GPU. I'm running on an i9-9990k and an RTX 2070, and they max out around 45-50%, but my framerate tanks pretty hard as the game is old and has some optimization issues.
What really matters, on the other hand, are RAM and disk read/write speeds. CSL does max out on 64GB when loading, and used to take an hour to load when running on an HDD.

Well I missunderstanded ok I will save that requirements for pc that you have to compare with it in the future

Please Skyve profile or mods + asset pack I’m begging you

hot basalt
hot basalt
# sharp wolf Please Skyve profile or mods + asset pack I’m begging you

I have received multiple requests for this; however, I'm a bit hesitant to release it as is because:

  1. Outdated mods.
Due to Nakayama's long development history (circa 2021), quite a few of the mods I use are outdated. While some have specific features (i.e. First Person Camera Mod supports Reshade SSR, while ACME does not), others had been dependencies that later became discontinued (such as the EML suite of mods). These mods are being kept because my save relies on them, but they are not recommended for new saves.
  2. Stability issues.
While my build has been stable for myself, that is as far as I can say. I'm sure some incompatibilities must exist between the 130+ mods I use, as I encountered problems while porting over to a clean install and was only able to get it to work by copying over my old root folder. To this day I get occasional error messages (though fortunately these have not broken my saves), but my current philosophy is "If it ain't broke, dont' fix it".

Same thing goes for assets. I have so many that sometimes I'm not sure what I'm subscribed to. 😄

All this means I'd have to go through and reorganize my entire list, as to publish such an unvetted list to new users would be highly irresponsible. I will definitely try, as with everything I am doing with this project, but I can't make any promises as to when I can get it done.

Hey @hot basalt Do you have any custom shinkansen stops in the city? Like completely built by you

fair plover
#

I am having problems with connecting pedestrian paths to ronxy's shinkansen stationtracks. How did you manage to make your shinkansen stations functional?

hot basalt
#

@fair plover What problems are you having exactly with the shinkansen station tracks? There's not a lot of info for me to work with. Can you describe what you are trying to do, or perhaps the layout you currently have?

#

in addition, have you tried using other station tracks?

fair plover
#

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgdmeBEzXGw

I am using the method mentioned in that video. A oath placed to the middle of the station track and it automaticly connects to station track. This method works with the regular ronxy's station tracks, but doesnt on the shinkansens for me. Are you using the same method to make stations accessible or you use a different one maybe?

Tutorial on how to build a custom public transport station to perfectly fit your cities. Make custom shaped station tracks and connect them however you want for people to enter them. Use existing station buildings for any public transport types.

hot basalt
#

I see. A few questions:

  1. how high is the shinkansen station track elevated above the ground? If it is more than 8m high, you might need to manually shift the path node up using Move It until it snaps to the track (you should be able to tell if the terrain begins to spike and the path node has a "jagged" edge to it)
  2. Using Move It and dragging the node around sometimes can get it to connect. When designing the Nakayama Main Station building, I actually was having the opposite problem: nodes would snap to the station track even if I didn't want them to.
  3. You might want to check your Network Anarchy or Move It settings, as there are options to "snap" nodes.
  4. In reality, Shinkansen stations do not use "J-slab" track (which the Ronyx's shinkansen emulates); using traditional concrete track is more realistic. I actually do not plan on using Shinkansen tracks for the actual station areas.

trade secrets

Jokes aside, the main idea was to create secondary "backstage cities" from which trains would launch / terminate. Over time, some of these "staging grounds" became actualized cities of their own (this is where I bemoan getting carried away)—in effect, the Nakayama project isn't just one city, but actually an entire transit corridor between three different cities, including everything in-between. The challenge trade secret was finding a way to pack all of this into a single CSL map.

In total, the HSR line has a full circuit length of +200km, with over seven unique stations; the old main trunk line is even longer, at more than 250km and over 50 stops.

As for a "cat island", unfortunately, while there are no plans for a cat island (nor is there space), there are plans for a Nekoyama mountain railway (貓山森林鐵路). Are there any cat prop assets on the workshop though?

I think my freight network is quite barebones and is the most utilitarian of the three, while the Old Mainline clearly draws reference from the Tokaido Mainline and Taiwan's West Trunk Line.

#

the Shinkansen network references both older and newer lines, emulating the newer "J-slab" ballastless track while using more traditional catenaries. While most of the IMT presets favor prefabricated concrete viaducts, there are a few sections that are designed to look older.

9 MINUTE SHOWCASE REEL

Anya to Matsunoizumi (安亞~松泉)

Recently finished @surreal yew 's railway competition. This is the fixed version of my video submission (contains around a dozen extra shots)
https://youtu.be/hmS8jE-d-F0

The Akiza Line (秋莎線) is a 15-kilometer, single-track branch line that runs from the coastal town of Akiza (秋莎) to the village of Matsunoizumi (松泉), with a connecting spur to the old town of Anya (安亞). It is this latter section, between Kepu, Anya, and Matsunoizumi, that is the focus of this video.

The Akiza Line was original...

@hot basalt How did you make functional stations for the long shinkansens? I've spent hours experimenting and googling but I just cant figure it out. Single station track segments have a limit and past it trains cannot find a path to them. If i try using multiple segments or having a segment inbetween two station segments then it functions in theory, but for some reason when getting off a train all the cims get off of the last carriages and walk to the station at the front which causes them to walk on the tracks like in the picture (Where I tried to use two station track segments back to back). Is there a mod im missing or am I doing something wrong?

Multiple station track segments are one way, but the station length is unfortunately a hard-coded limitation of the game, and a bit of creativity is needed; even I don't have a single solution to this problem.

On some of my stations, I've set traffic signals via TMPE to prevent the train from leaving too early (this hides cims that have wandered onto the tracks and makes it look like they're just still on board the train)

Another solution is to use single-track stations, as I don't notice this issue as much—though this just might be just an overlap with the above—at the very least it prevents cims from wandering across to the other platform. You might also want to consider placing a path connection closer to the end of the main station segment (the segment the game recognizes the stop is on), as this might allow cims to beeline for it in rare situations (I'm not too sure of this, but it's worth double checking)

The last solution I've been experimenting with is using Lane Controller, but I have to caution that this is unstable and can break the stop and cause cims to become stuck on the platform: I'm still testing this and perhaps I'll create a guide in the future.

You might also want to get Vectorial's Better Train Boarding, as well as some of his other mods, as I've found them also helpful as well. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2773460744

@restive crypt
I could be wrong, but by analyzing the picture I think I see the following issues:

  • The pedestrian path on the left seems to have a second connection to the station itself. This might cause pathing issues.
  • The location of the right pathway feels odd. Assuming you are using left-hand drive (I am unsure), your cims would have to walk to the node of the main station segment before they can backtrack along the station track's internal ped path before they can exit (according to game logic: cims exiting the last cars of the station are not "on" a station platform, they must first walk/fly to the main station segment before they can move anywhere else.)

Thanks for the replies! Yes I am using left-hand drive and there is a path connected to the station on the right but I angled the camera to the left side to show the cims more clearly. It makes sense why cims would have to walk to the station segment at the front, but even after getting Vectorial's Better Train Boarding cims still insist on exiting the train from the last cars, walking to the main station segment and then turning back to use the pedestrian path in the direction they came from. (Even after adding another one on the node between the stations)

hot basalt
#

you might want to redraw your ped paths again then

#

my point is the cims will go the main station segment no matter what

restive crypt
#

I understand. I guess I'll just have to settle for imperfect boarding in exchange for the beautiful long Shinkansens. Thanks for the help though!

FYI I manually tried to gather information through various sources including but not limited to:

  1. Discord channel chat history
  2. Reddit & steam comment/tutorial pages
  3. Mod github issue pages
And yet I still managed to miss quite a few source about this issue (too long train) when I tried to use Chatgpt to give me answers (free version), basically it gave me all of my searched results apart from the github issue page results I found, and quite a few other ones. The solutions it gave me are also plausible & reasonable (as in referenced precisely)
Hence I would recommend to use Chat or whatever LLM available to you if you have encountered an issue, especially ones that maybe other people have encountered before. Chat is no longer the type you would expect back in 2021, they evolves at an almost terrifying speed

I do think LLMs can be useful as a starting point, but I'd be cautious of becoming too reliant on them. LLMs only give an approximation of the information that's out there, with little to no way of verifying the accuracy of its sources (there have been cases where references include incorrect information from ai-generated responses, which then becomes an accepted part of the official discourse). With what you've said, I'm actually more curious about what other methods are out there that haven't been mentioned here.

Lane controller
You can try offsetting the nodes for the pedestrian lane of the station segment, as shown, but I haven't had the chance to test everything in detail given how glacial my pace is. Perhaps someone can test this out for me and let me know how things fare. All I do know is that I must caution you do this on a backup save as this CAN break your stations and strand passengers on the platform if you drag things too far.

That is extremely true when the things we ask LLM are extremely detailed and we have almost no way of verifying them. HOwever chat did gave me hyperlinks to the sources and most of them are from Reddit & steam tutorial (random reddit pages & REV0 tutorial). I do agree that perhaps some reddit sources are not as credible as testing them out oneself, but again people put threads there because they have encountered the issue right? There has to be people who actually have some kind of solution to it (like you did in the thread previously).

#

Unfortunately, the methods of solving it does not involve bypassing the issue like what you said. It basically refered to REV0's tutorial and recommeded either to use multiple train station tracks, or subscribe shorter trains.

  1. on one of the Reddit page, one user said:
You could make the stop at the front most station track, and add cim attraction blocks along the platform to simulate people waiting (still not solving the walking on track issue though)
  2. REV0's tutorial:
Railway2's station tracks does not have the behavior where cims would cross the end node of a station track segment in order to get to the other side of the platform (This was also shown in your youtube video where cims were crossing on top of the railway to the other platform)
#

Let me find my chatgpt history so I can recall what exactly I did 3AM in the moring csLaugh

#

tbh it seems that chat just gave me a sum up on all its sources. I dont really use that sum up a lot I prefer going straight to the sources it found to judge on myself (👀
