Yes, that mountain range is a part of the alps but I forgot its name, cutting a railway through it would be about 70-89 miles of track in mountains, which very much exists, new york to Chicago track through appalacians is more like 50-60 miles of track, however due to the less dense nature of the appalacians the track would have to be like the german high speed rail through Hessen, lots of tunnels and bridges. However the kassel-wurzburg line is bigger than the appalacians yet it probably has more track of tunnel and bridges than appalacians size.

The appalacians is pretty much the only major mountain range track needs to be built through

The only other mountains are the ones east and north of LA, which steep tunneling would bring it to desert and valley like territory very soon, and also Rocky mountains, however high speed rail track there is not needed ATM

East Coast and West Coast tracks running across the coast don't need to worry about mountains
