Making a bit of progress on the downtown area of my city, adding some details and filling blank spaces

@feral herald

#

Pog you doing a new city on MOnterey?

patent coral
#

yeah

lapis moat
# patent coral yeah

What vibe you trying to go for? Like SF type city, LA type, Bakersfield Type, or some other California type or something else

patent coral
#

Taking inspiration from SF mostly, for the waterfront especially. But I'm also looking at Baltimore, for the waterfront as well. I'm also trying for some LA vibes with the mountains in the background, and the size of the downtown in proportion with the rest of the (future) city

#

I wanted something a bit like this, in some ways

#

but obviously the downtown core is pretty much right on the waterfront, unlike LA

#

I like nice views

lapis moat
#

Like how SF’s is

patent coral
#

yeah I guess

fierce ocean
#

LOVE it

main sedge
#

@lapis moat what do you use for video quality

#

i have everything on max and my game still looks like poo

lapis moat
#

Cuz if not I use a ton of mods

#

But this is their thread

main sedge
#

@patent coral

#

yea i just press tab cause it used to just auto select the thread owner

#

idk why discord removed that

patent coral
#

I use Render It, Relight, Dynamic Resolution ( boosting to 150-200% resolution), and Theme Mixer 2
My graphic settings are all at max (except for Anti Aliasing, which is disabled). I'm using FXAA anti aliasing in Render It!, and I have it set to Extreme Quality, or maybe one level lower, I don't remember exactly

#

If you want to have a look at my Relight settings, check my map's workshop page (search for Monterey, you should find it easily), there's a screenshot of it there. Last image

#

In general tho, a good LUT will do like 75% of the work, a good map theme or theme mix will also improve the look of the game quite drastically, the rest is mostly minor improvements in comparison

#

Oh and Cubemap Replacer to replace the look of the skybox

main sedge
patent coral
#

Yeah, a good LUT will help a lot

#

I personally almost always use Relight Neutral. Comes with the Relight mod

#

I've tried many many different LUTs but I always go back to relight neutral

main sedge
#

is that through the color correction menu?

new new road because the previous one wasn't working as intended

fierce ocean
#

palms growing out of concrete

#

👍

patent coral
fierce ocean
#

did you use custom road builder for that road

patent coral
#

Yes

#

It's really nice to use but unfortunately I'm having some issues with the roads generated... My FPS is taking a big hit from the IMT fillers and lines, which never really happened before afaik

#

But going from 38FPS to 29FPS when using just a couple of the roads I've generated

#

So I'm probably gonna just use workshop roads for now

patent coral
patent coral
#

new tram road once again. I'll probably settle with this one

#

when I toggle problem notifications on 🥴

sand raft
patent coral
#

😔

#

it's not too bad right now. I lowered the render distance and LOD distance settings in IMT's options and I'm getting around 30-35 FPS with this view, which should be my most detailed area so far

sand raft
#

It lags so much with 100 percent speed camera and the cam jumps everywhere

#

Unplayable without Play It

patent coral
#

oh god kek

#

good luck

patent coral
#

LOL YES, I was looking for a tram asset with doors on the correct side but couldn't find any that I liked as much as this one so I'm just rolling with it for now 😂

patent coral
#

thanks, this one looks quite nice

patent coral
#

Little custom tram stop

lapis moat
patent coral
lapis moat
#

Also the LUT and theme for Monterey matches it soooooo well

patent coral
#

I'll look into adding bollards

lapis moat
#

nah, use a lane marker and bollards, or like me in some portions of the city I havent started working on in, follow Vancouver and use Traffic Cones

patent coral
#

not the bollards I'm gonna use but yeah I think this could look nice

patent coral
#

I think this looks quite nice. Thanks for the tip @lapis moat

#

Quite happy with how these roads turned out, only bummer is IMT having such a big impact on my FPS now. Also gotta find some nicer planters for the palms now

patent coral
fierce ocean
#

those roads just look so nice too

fierce ocean
#

thanks

patent coral
#

New bus + tram roads

patent coral
#

sprawl

fierce ocean
#

respectfully those houses r not it for me

#

but it looks nice

patent coral
#

They were pretty much the only low density houses I had at the time kek

#

I'm probably gonna keep those houses to just one or two neighborhoods tho

#

they're quite colorful...

patent coral
#

Replaced two buildings. One of them I felt was a biiiiit too iconic to LA. The other (the orange-ish building) is just to fill a bit more space

patent coral
#

what's MCM? 😟

sand raft
#

Mid Century Modern CCP

patent coral

I hadn't started downloading low density assets, probably downloaded like 100 low density residential and commercial a few hours ago 🥴

#

I love Monterey

patent coral
#

I have once again changed one of defining buildings of the downtown

#

I thought the one I chose was too wide and fat. Chose something slimmer. Still has a nice angle on the roof. I think I prefer that

sand raft
lapis moat
patent coral
#

Doing some detailing along the little creek, heavily inspired by the mission creek channel area near Oracle Park

patent coral

probably going to work on the waterfront soon

this area looks gentrified as hell

This has already turned into my screenshot dump so I'll keep that going, don't mind me

Also they all look great

#

Love the bridge and the rather flowing concrete. Highway looks like a river

patent coral

Thanks!

patent coral

You get so much more space just by removing the hills in the starting square 😄

right now

#

I'll reload my save

mint veldt
#

Same Map as well but I messed around with the terrain and added some hills

#

it was an old city i abandoned. I switched over to working on Revelstoke which is also an awesome map

patent coral
#

Not bad. A bit shorter but it's cute. Should look better on the curves

#

has a little bell sound when it arrives and departs, that's cute

#

yes please, I scrolled a bunch of the workshop but couldn't find any as nice as those two I'm using. The pesa fokstrot one isn't even american at all 😄

#

no right now it's more decorative lmao

mint veldt
#

I havent experiemented with trams/streetcars yet. would it be realistic for an pittsburgh style city to have one?

patent coral
#

Has doors on the left side too so that's cool

patent coral
patent coral
mint veldt
#

Yes it is

patent coral
#

I was building on bay of plenty before. Great map

mint veldt
#

This is the current downtown, not sure if trams will fit well here

patent coral
#

building on my Monterey map now tho, doing a california-type city

patent coral
mint veldt
#

mhm i can see. although i'd use Marble Mountain

mint veldt
patent coral
#

Marble mountain is nice but the original map is imo too different from what $2.20 ended up creating during his marble mountain series 😄

#

oh!

mint veldt
patent coral
#

it looks nice but it's a bit low detail blobpleading

mint veldt
#

Dundee downtown is hard to recreate as he terraformed a lot. Marble Mountain too

patent coral
mint veldt
#

1st episode for Oceania i see like an cut where land got extended to the point it was nearly unrecognizable

patent coral
#

I was sticking with this one because it has really great details 😄

#

this one isn't too far behind

#

well that's my fault kek

#

I made a road with boarding on the right side as well but it was a tiny little bit too wide

#

I think this was the first one I made

#

so the pesa fokstrot tram would have worked there

#

thanks for these!

mint veldt
#

Trams for me

#

Dont mind the stairs to death

#

so are those good trams or not?

patent coral
#

They're loooong but they look nice

#

What are those trams?

#

I might look into adding an old-school tram in another area of the city at some point. I know SF still has a couple

#

yeah I figured they were probably french kek

#

Le bourget

#

oh yeah thanks!

#

yep yep, found it linked in the description 😄

thank you. Probably a bit too long for my city, but I do see a door on both sides 😳

fierce surge
#

it just looks better when the downtown area has railway network for me

#

never mind , i forgot you are building america city💀

patent coral
#

I might still add a small-ish train station close-ish to the downtown

mellow latch
#

SF has Salesforce Plaza now, which very well could host California HSR once it starts service

#

It’s a giant bus terminal now

mint veldt
#

wth is with america and buses. y'all american cities irl cant even have more than 2kmh at rush hour

#

why not invest in some metro that isnt crap and trains

mellow latch
#

Busses are far cheaper than tunneling a new metro tunnel or building train stations and rail

mint veldt
#

I mean yes that is true but tons of money is wasted on maintaining those damn roads and not investing in alternative forms of transport

mellow latch
#

many americans are extremely against any form of transit besides cars, don't ask me why because I have no idea

#

They will do anything to block public transit from being built, take Elon Musk's boring tunnel for example

#

it's sole purpose, combined with his hyperloop, was to derail California HSR

#

he has no actual plans to put either into the real world

mint veldt
#

I mean 203 billion spent on road maintainance is an real hog of tax money wasted

patent coral
#

I have once again changed the road. I think this might make a bit more sense

mellow latch
#

what LUT and render it settings are you running?

patent coral
#

So now the door on these trams is on the correct side lol, and the trams keep going straight even when there's a 3rd lane

patent coral
mellow latch
#

ah thanks

patent coral
#

these might also help @mellow latch

#

using FXAA anti aliasing in Render It

#

the Citadis one was a biiit too long. I tried a couple of others but I still preferred the ones I'm using right now 😄

#

that's the one I tried I think

#

the one I'm using is like 2.5 cars kek

mint veldt
#

i run these citadis trams, their 4 cars which is somewhat short for me

patent coral
#

Although I think I'll try it again because I'm kind of not a huge fan of vehicles that use the line colors...

#

Anyway, wanted to post this lol

mint veldt
#

nice

patent coral
#

that one the teal+yellow livery is nice but I don't think it would fit here. And vehicles using line colors I don't really like 😄

#

This one?

#

that's the one I was referring to

#

yeah but I don't really like the colors 😄
And I don't want the trams to have line colors either 😟

#

I'm not a fan of having 5 differently colored trams personally, and then I take too long making sure the line color looks good on the tram, and then my line colors themselves look a bit messed up lol

Not much work the past few days. Well, actually a lot of work but I scrapped all of it kek
So here are some pictures of trams

patent coral
#

This is the area I worked on today. It's kinda under developed but I guess that's the idea. Not sure if I really like it but it'll do for now at least 😄

#

Probably gonna work on this next. Will mostly be an area that was redeveloped into a park I think

like NYC wants to make parks that work as flood walls?

sand raft
patent coral

I don't know if I'll have the patience and motivation to design something like that 😂
But I'll keep it in mind, maybe I'll find something to make that work somewhere

#

I think the ferry building needs to be closer to the water no?

patent coral
#

yes if I wanted it to make sense, probably kek

crude mountain
#

also for between it and the parking lot to the left I'd say perhaps a small building

#

perhaps a newer one

patent coral
#

I might rework the quays there a little bit

patent coral
#

thanks

#

I designed the waterfront and the quays before there were any buildings so the scale is a bit off 😄

patent coral
#

reduced the size of the quays or whatever and replaced some of the buildings

patent coral
#

reduced the length of the pier warehouses as well. I think it's a bit better proportioned relative the the downtown now

sand raft

@patent coral no for real get jet bridges and place a cruise ship downsized as a ferry along the building so its boarding :)

Looking good so far mate. I'm also playing on the Monterey map but I think I've taken a totally different direction to you haha

#

How exactly did you make the quays on the waterfront? I learnt about these "terraforming" quays yesterday that you can draw a wall/fence against, is that how you did this? Or did you just put a terraforming road on the sea floor then draw the wall?

patent coral
patent coral
# scarlet nacelle How exactly did you make the quays on the waterfront? I learnt about these "terr...

I made them using dock wall props, and ploppable asphalt surfaces. Takes a lot of patience to align them all properly. Before that tho I just used the basic road to design the layout. Once I had something I liked I went and finished it with the wall props and asphalt surfaces. You could probably use retaining wall networks instead of wall props too, would be much easier.
Also used some terraforming networks to make terraforming between and along the quays a bit easier

Damn does that look delicious

Ya know I only just really took notice of this but I think its part of why I like this city as much as I do - the way you have this Canal or river, whatever it is separate the outer left side of the skyline from the rest, sort of making it its own small skyline, is really cool

Np, I use quays a lot because I'm lazy haha. Tbh my usual go-to is to just draw them all normally then use node controller to get a 90 corner instead of rounded. I set the node type to custom then drag them all the way over. It does leave a very small gap though if you zoom in. A bit quicker than dragging the nodes over each other in Move It! and adjusting the heights. Some quays you gotta mess with the offsets too much tho so it's better to just do the latter. Your marina looks wicked btw.

I like what I've made here but I don't think I'm going to continue working on Monterey. There were some issues where cims would gather and wait forever at inexistent tram stops that I tried to fix for many hours but I wasn't able to. So that kinda made me lose motivation to work on this.

I've always kinda wanted to make more of a european-styled city, but with some american/modern influences too. Something like Frankfurt for example, with some skyscrapers, and looking at road networks (historical and modern) of Europe, train lines and train stations, etc.
I've never really played with more than buses and one or two metro/tram lines before so I think that would be cool.

Would also give me an opportunity to start fresh with mods and assets as well 😄
