I have followed plenty of guides online on what dependecies to download and such but have yet to get gamemaker to run on steam
everytime it just gives me this message and doesnt let me proceed
Im sure this is a pretty common issue so my bad if thats the case
Im on a debian 12 machine if thats relevant( therefore need to install the beta version from my understanding)
#Cant get gamemaker to work
201 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Steam would only use the Windows binaries
Which may or may not work
I’d suggest installing the beta instead
Could I use proton or would that be too scuffed
What do you think proton does
It's just a windows api layer from Valve
So, it'll be using Windows binaries from whatever app you're running on Steam
When I get to the game maker page on steam it does allow me to install it natively so I'd imagine it was installing specifically for linux
Guess not
This is why I am telling you to use the beta version
And linked the release above
They HAVE .deb packages
Which... Isn't great if you're on non-debian
But there are ways around that even then
☝️
You will also have to follow this guide
It says "Ubuntu"
But the dependencies and such do apply to all distros
this link doesnt work
ill try and find it anyway
found it
cant get it to work
followed the guide to the letter but still nothing
Unfortunately “this doesn’t work” is so non descriptive that not even I could help with that
You gotta get into detail mate
Tell me exactly what’s happening
I mean the gamemaker command is even recognized
downloaded the package from the link u sent
followed the guide
think I have done everything
it doesnt get recognized at all
Im really sorry Im not being that helpful so u can help me but I really dont know how else I would describe it
Did you install the package
yes
Do you have any notable errors
Does your computer explode
Does it implode
Like, literally tell me like I cannot see your computer screen
outside of gamemaker?
(Cause I cannot)
Any, all
If you want help, you need to provide as much detail as possible
theres one module thats completelly unrelated that doesnt load on boot but apart from that no
its from an adapter
K
not related to the system
I cant open it at all
it doesnt even show up in apps
thats what I mean with it doesnt get recognized at all
its like I have done absolutly nothing
You see how descriptive and helpful that is? Keep that up!
ok sure
what do u want me to tell u abt anything then?
gonna cd there and look for it one sec
not here
notinstalled correctly I would imagine then
Did you install the deb package?
I installed it from here
the exact link u sent
the ubuntu link
only gave me this
Yeah so
That shouldn't happen on debian systems
You should just be able to install it like it's an installer of some kind
mine is though
Im really at a loss here
thats what I saw it was too
“Mine is though” and it not letting you install it
Doesn’t mean much
Whatever the case is, the installer isn’t kicking up
(If you even have a system for that on your install)
is the fact that its a stable release and not a tester/beta version of debian relevant
Don’t know
I don’t use Debian
I only really touch on Ubuntu, Pop!_OS, Arch Linux (Steam Deck) and Rasbian
So you, as a Debian user, need to wield and master your own distro too
But that being said
If you right click on the package itself and goto “open with”
Do you have something like eddy show up on the list?
Or similar?
ANy kind of installer-like program?
the folder that it gave me or smth inside it?
Just the .deb
Directly the .deb
Not inside
If not
You could try a few different things
- Opening it up with the Software Store
- Via the terminal,
sudo apt install ./name.deb
this is literally what the isntall game me when I unziped it with ark
there isnt any .deb package
isnt what it should be giving if it was downloading the package correctly? the .deb package
ok realized its a .deb package
the act of me unziping it is the issue here
I think
one sec

Yeah don't unzip it...
(There is a way to install it that way, but lets not do that if we can best avoid it)
Okie
One of these two should do
ill test one sec
the .deb is inside the downloads directory
should it be like this to install it
didnt really get how I should be inputting the command
skipped...
Would be nice to try all options in order 🙂
Excellent!
I am going to now jolt that down inside of my lil notes here
I keep a list of "Linux issues" with GameMaker fwiw
really grateful
the "issue" was just going on auto pilot and not really an issue with the system but sure
Id imagine the list covers those kinds of "situations" hahaha
thx a lot though
really grateful
Going on "auto pilot" is more of a end user problem
And less of a Linux issue
I can't fix that
guess I also didnt download a package correctly
This may be in relation to ffmpeg not being setup
time to go back and check it all
Ill just search how to set it up
Mkay
pulseaudio too?
yeah
I've got that on my own Pop!_OS install too so I'll have to ask around and double check
Ill try and be active in the server to see if u post it and get a response
All that error means in GameMaker is that you can't preview audio via the IDE
Ah I sort of keep a Linux-specific place elsewhere, so I'll be mostly checking around there
I'll let you know if there's anything needed to be done on your end
would I be able to test sound related issues through other ways then?
thx a lot
You have a video player or mp3 player or something on your system surely
If you can play audio through that
Then it's a non issue for you really
oh so I can just make the audio when Im testing smth play through an audio player externally
is that like a setting inside gamemaker?
myb Im getting it wrong
Well you can make a audio asset in GameMaker and do stuff with it, it just means hearing it won't apply until you build and run the game (most likely)
If you already have the sounds on your system
You are probably going to want to play them outside of gamemaker anyway just to listen to them
fine enough
I prob wont be able to test a game of mine for a while though
only have an idea
and some html and css experince which I realize are completly unrelated and wont help me at all lmao
lmao
Well, if it's anything
GML is similar style to Javascript in a lot of ways
So if you are wanting to learn Javascript and want to later on do some GameMaker
You can transfer some of your existing knowledge of Javascript
(The only thing we lack is things like optional chaining and proper closures in that ballpark)
not really
web dev related learning is not on my sight currently
Fair enough
I wish I knew what that means 🙂
Not important!
Ill learn it hopefully eventually
but gml is my priority rn
just seemed like an easy way to implement my idea
No worries 🫡
gl with ur things too
cheers
