this is common in most computer graphics applications especially 2D stuff

From what i've used:
Clip Studio Paint, Photoshop, Godot, Unity 2D... -Y is up

If you're doing 3D that's a different story, in that case yea -Y is down, like in Blender and 3ds Max

though idk about 3D in GMS2... is -Y down/up can anyone confirm

Having basically only used GM, -Y being up is normal and the other way is obscene

Any axis can be your up down axis in 3D, it depends how you set the camera up.
I use +z as up in my 3D projects

there's a reason for the way it is too:
your screen draws in the same order you read, left to right, top to bottom
so as the screen draws goes downwards, y increases (and it won't have to deal with negative numbers)

#

so it's just one of those "get used to the convention" kinda thing

when in rome do as the romans do

It's not a big problem but why don't they just add a option in settings to change -y from up to down

#

Not every country read and write like Americans

it's not just gamemaker. Godot does the same

#

it's just the standard. that's just how it is

#

you'll find alot of the time in life, someone at some point had to make a choice. and the choice stuck and now we just kinda live with it

#

as for why not an option

probably because since this is a standard in so many places, that option would have to fundamentally change too many things

Why do we make it like unity -y down and y I up and make it easyer for everyone even new people well like it because it's like unity and math in Schools

#

And why change y up and -y we'll make alot of problems

idk how to answer it for you more than what we've already said, other than that's just how it is and it's not gonna change any time soon

you just have to get used to it.

#

the same can be asked about math in school

why is y up in school and not y down?

#

because someone said so

#

(that guy's name is Descartes)

idk what grade you are, but sometimes it's convenient to have y point down too in physics
