I think the game has power crept to the point where something like that can exist. You can just suppress it, or there’s a million different ways in game to destroy it. Or you can just develop your board until it dies.

The rule of guard units not having smokescreen is there because it could lock down the game if you don't have a way to interact with the guard. The card I made has a way for you to get rid of it built into the card. Plus every deck has a way of getting around guard nowadays. When that rule was printed, there was no suppress, no fight, no convert, and like 60% of the removal options weren't in the game.
