this is a kind of a misconception, tanks are primarily meant to engage soft targets - infantry, trucks, fortifications etc

Actually, not really. The rounds the tanks typically have are anti-armor though it is true that tanks also have anti-infantry muntions as well

In reality tanks rarely engage other tanks, hence why most tanks ammo loadout is majority HE-FS

or for older tanks just HE

Tanks have always been designed as breakthrough vehicles meant to engage infantry and fortifications, with the added abulity of being to engage other armored vehicles
