So I'm like a horrible singer (as you'll learn while watching the video) but I'm really passionate about singing and I really want to try musical theater so I really want to get better at singing I just need time tips. I honestly have no idea what I'm doing so anything is helpful

here's my advice.

  1. You seem to be out of breath. Maybe it will improve if you sing only through your mouth. don't let any air out through your nose.
  2. when singing I've noticed that there are 2 types of breathing: using your lungs or your diaphragm (it's like taking in air through your belly idk how to explain it 😅). the second way allows you to sing longer on one exhale, and it makes me sing louder.
I wanted to give it a try but don't take it for granted 🙂 HEHAH

You’re on the right track @autumn violet. OH and also, RELAX! Relax your throat and body whilst you sing, trust me I struggle with this too but if you can be relaxed, you’ll get the best results

Hi @autumn violet , (I had to separate this into two parts)

Before I get into what I noticed, I want to start off by saying that I love musical theater and I think with more practice- you can definitely achieve it! I noticed one thing that’s amazing is your rhythm- you have a nice pacing for this song.

In particular, I noticed three things you were doing.

The first is that you struggle with breath support. I noticed these when you had to take breaths and you gasped, or at times when you struggle to sustain a note and fell flat. For breath support issues, one of my favorite exercises I use is the straw exercises and scales. If you have a coffee straw with you- or a thin straw- what you can do is practice scales (you can go from high to low or low to high) and you just sing into it as you go. I’ve also noticed that as you go up, you attack the note instead of sliding through it, I think a good practice for this would be to do sirens and practice sliding into those higher notes. This will help balance the air as it comes in and out and reduce risks of vocal cord impact.

Another thing I noticed when it came to your singing was your tone. While I’m not a professional, I’ve noticed that with your breath support issues- you seem to have a bit of hypernasality. When your vocal cords allow air in, they can either get too much or too little- hypernasality means that your vocal cords have too much. The best way to tell this is when you pinch your nose and you talk, that’s hypernasality and with it, it can affect your tone to be a bit airy (almost like early billie eillish). The best way to overcome hypernasality can be to record yourself and notice when you do it and also to practice yawning exercises. These exercises will allow you to notice the space within your mouth and practice those air flow in the nasal cavity. I’ll put down some links to it for you to practice.

Finally, I noticed you had a lot of pitch inaccuracies. When it comes to staying on key, I noticed you fell flat or sharp on several notes. My best suggestion to help stay on key would be use a backing track. You can pull one up on YouTube or use a karaoke version and simply practice the song with those in mind. You can also practice those scales from before that I mentioned as well, and practice staying on key - you can use certain apps from the App Store to see if you are matching the keys and such and correct yourself if you aren’t.
