my biggest issue is that in our tiny SAT choir i can't match resonance with the other tenor since i can't get warm/open enough

You’re just accidentally or maybe unconsciously focusing too much throat
basically especially since you said the head voice or even belting or high notes we don’t ever wanna squeeze or engage any neck muscles since it’s very unnecessary and like you mention in the post there’s so many different tensions so it can be anything unless you’re more specific on the where youre straining from but most of the time just keep a straight body posture and focus breathing quickly, deep but also quiet breaths and engage your stomach and make sure its 100%
Focus on the lower body and don’t rise your chest when you breathe.

#

Usually we don’t want to go over our vocal range limit but also don’t force it or muscle when we sing

#

That’s crucial

#

Also for the head voice and falsetto thing sure they’re interchangeable but I do have to disagree they’re def not the same especially in quality but they are under like the umbrella term and falsetto is a type of head voice, so they are related but def NOT the same

Head voice = not airy (breathy), fuller and powerful sounding, like opera

Falsetto = lighter and breathier and soft, think of Billie eillish

i don't even know when i'm belting tbh

#

i'm guessing that's the range where she asked me to "keep going" ? (2:57 as a time stamp)

abstract oyster
#

also, "(...) on the where you're straining from" is this about range or physicality?

#

because i think the strain is consistent throughout my whole range. physically, it's definitely the throat.

#

when i try to feel when my throat and neck muscles start to act up, it gets tense when i go down to b2 and at f4, and then even moreso at c5

#

and then from c5 and onwards it gets tenser and tenser with each note i go up lol

It’s similar to yelling but with technique and control and healthy (key word it’s not screaming)

#

So it’s not the same

#

But yeee

abstract oyster
#

pretty difficult to understand how that would apply to myself since everyone's voices are different so when i look up video/audio examples it's unique to them

abstract oyster
#

oh it's just projection

broken sinew
#

Exactly

#

Lmao

#

That’s belting

broken sinew
#

I’ll help out

abstract oyster
#

i've heard belting as some sort of mythical feat to achieve but that doesn't seem too hard?

#

are people just having trouble getting a good sounding tone?

broken sinew
#

That’s like saying you calling out for your mom outside your room is hard

#

That’s basically belting

#

Or that’s like saying speech is hard

#

Singing and speech is literally similar

#

You feel me

abstract oyster
broken sinew
#

It’s avoidable

#

But it’s just a lot of practice

#

Getting use to

abstract oyster
#

yeah i feel you to the point sometimes it feels like i'm not singing and it's just talk, which doesn't sound very musical

broken sinew
#

However we need to add sauce behind the talking

#

Which is why singing don’t sound exactly like talking from the untrained ear

#

But it is

abstract oyster
#

what sorts of practice by the way? my instructor has been trying to get me to yawn, pant, and do body exercises but it doesn't seem to lax my throat

#

maybe that's just for mouth cavity/resonance

broken sinew
#

Well it’s good and that’s great you’re doing them

#

But for you

#

I’d say we need to start basic

abstract oyster
#

such as?

broken sinew
#

That’s the first thing

abstract oyster
#

it's the muscle or such that you use while breathing deeply or when you inhale/exhale harshly

broken sinew
#

Yes but do you know how to engage it

#

If I said

#

Core

#

Use your diaphragm rn

#

Would you do it

abstract oyster
#

i would understand it as having to tense the muscles in my stomach lol

broken sinew
#

Yessss

#

Actually can you vc

#

I’ll like to talk rather than vc

#

If that’s ok
