#Minimillest Devilish Needs icons collection (v2.07)

You think that Devilish Needs icons are proper gauges, but they only display 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100%. Here, we display the 5 possible readings more cleanly, with no need to squint at a gauge or even see icons when all of our needs are met:

  1. No unmet need = no icon
  2. 25% on the gauge = mostly transparent icon
  3. 50% on the gauge = less transparent icon
  4. 75% on the gauge = opaque icon
  5. 100% on the gauge, soon to die = opaque icon with red alert circle

Opaque and circled icons are visual calls to action which really stand out until you address them. The incentives run the right way here -- meet your needs to keep your screen clean.

The exhaustion icon stands out and isn't intuitive, so probably this. The other ones seem fine.

stark tide
#

Well, here is what I thought. Temperature is a special meter, since it goes up and down, and the cure is always the opposite. We will leave it out for now.

Drink meter: drink icon showing up, better get drink

Exhaustion meter: foot icon showing up, better sleep```
So exhaustion is weird. But when the icon shows up, you need sleep. What is the icon for sleep that has no "Zzzz" in it? Well, night-time sky. Hey! MW has a moon-and-star logo already...

My other inspiration was to have two crescent moons to represent Masser and Secunda.
#

Oooh! What about crescent Masser and Secunda that wax larger as you become exhausted???

#

...instead of less transparent, like the others

stark tide
#

πŸ€”

spare kernel
stark tide
#

I think it is good that it be a different color, though, would you agree?

#

Maybe a sun that is gradually eclipsed, or something?

spare kernel
#

Masser and/or Secunda could work as well

stark tide
#

I have food and drink colored the same for design reasons

spare kernel
#

This fading icon trick works quite well

stark tide
stark tide
spare kernel
#

I remember that one.

#

Icons are better than text. DD had the right idea here.

stark tide
#

I was pretty excited when it came out. Excited to bring something similar to DN. I wouldn't care if DD took my work in wholesale, but I would wait for it to improve further, if I were him

stark tide
#

I would also add that, given the broad variety of UI skins available, these icons should be stylistically neutral in those terms. The hard bronze squareness of the prior DN icons rubbed me wrong

#

Some ideas for how to depict the exhaustion icon:

  • new moon(s) that gradually wax(es) to full
  • a stick figure that starts with a sprightly spring in his step and ends up drag-foot and hunched over (this would mean an icon when the need is met, have to scratch it)
  • a comfy pillow that fades in (Drarayne would approve!)
  • a pair of eyes that goes from bright to lidded (again, displays while need is met, booooo)
  • an abstract green (just for the color scheme) energy blob that grows or fades in over time, maybe something like ectoplasm
  • gas can that empties (just making sure you are awake! this would never work)
  • a tent icon that fades in
  • a starfield todd that fades in, with a bright moon at max need
Keeping in mind that it must be invisible when the need is met, I would love to hear more ideas.
#

I'm generally inclined to stick with fade-ins

vague trench
#

a red eye that fades in?

stark tide
#

Oksy...

  • an eye-shaped pattern of blootshot veins fading in
  • a "dozing" eye depiction that fades in, maybe the iris gets brighter near max need
  • like, we can't settle for some clipart of a bed, right???
  • what are we gunna dooooo??? ideas
#

Or, or, or, hear me out, invent some lore about like these gross creepy cockroach/bedbug things that eat your flesh if they can so you and everyone else in Morrowind always have these little cockbug/bedroach catcher-and-killer devices that are quite distinct-looking. So, your icon for needing sleep would be a depiction of that device, since all of the cockbugs and bedroaches must die every time. Plausible!

#

I just want all potential contributors to know that everything is on the table here

stark tide
stark tide
#

Maybe like some kind of Sauron flame eye orb

#

But...it just doesn't evoke sleep needs for me

stark tide
#

Seems like phases of Masser could be good for indicating exhaustion -- full moon, gotta sleep soon

#

@spare kernel what do you think?

spare kernel
stark tide
#

I think I will go forward with it. It's not going to fade in like the other indicators -- rather, it will wax into fullness

vague trench
#

yeah i like that, moon phases is probably the best way to go with it

stark tide
#

I am going to go SXHD (512x512) with this update, as well

#

I am cooking and tasting it right now, and I think it's going to be a lot better than moon-and-star

stark tide
stark tide
#

Masser will be

stark tide
#

I got permission from Jacey to use those fine vector icon assets, will make hi-def frost and fire icons look nice

stark tide
#

@spare kernel @vague trench Any feedback on the Masser implementation, guys?

#

I struggle some with matching the overall brightess and contrast of it, since the Vanilla textures are not consistent between phases

#

Also, I tried to make 512x512 icons, but they just scaled so horribly

vague trench
#

i like the design but it does stand out a bit next to the others

stark tide
#

I think I am just accepting that. Hunger/thirst vs. exhaustion vs. temperature are each a category of need, in my head-canon

vague trench
#

makes sense

stark tide
#

It's that or come up with a cutesy icon of a bed, but I am resisting that for aesthetic reasons

vague trench
#

haha yeah a bed is the most obvious but just doesnt feel right

spare kernel
#

the concept is ok

stark tide
#

Good feedback, thanks

spare kernel
stark tide
#

Aye, phasing in is distinct from fading in, to be sure. Thanks again

#

I suppose I could just fade it in, but I wanted to try the phases since it is a moon after all

spare kernel
#

phases are ok. Still, some amount of fading may help with making the icon more subtle

#

just make sure that slight exhaustion is still visible

spare kernel
#

food for thought

stark tide
spare kernel
#

these icons are abstract πŸ˜„

stark tide
#

Touche haha

stark tide
spare kernel
stark tide
#

I decided I like the non-temperature needs sharing a color scheme

stark tide
#

I am considering actually using it to play the game for once πŸ˜…

stark tide
#

I'm a little bit more than a little bit colorblind, and I suspect that the blue I used for cold is not as intense or as visible as the red I used for heat. Any feedback?

stark tide
#

Some discussion about the mod has taken place in #showcase message

peak perchBOT
stark tide
#

@haughty sable We are going to offer some stylistic options in subdirectories in this mod, and 1.0-style temperature icons will be brought into the HD (64x64) age

haughty sable
#

Neat

stark tide
#

...maybe haha

#

It really needs to just be done correctly for the ages and have 00 Core and all that

#

There is room for imagining an icicle that turns into an iceberg, and a wee flame that turns into a bonfire. 4x the work but perhaps worth it?

#

I am overall pretty okay with the illustration style of the first 3 needs, though I note that the tent tint is a bit off from meat and grog. Maybe that's okay.

#

There is an inconsistency in the density of the three as well, but that I just chalk up to the limits of my sources for images. I think temperature needs something, but I'm not πŸ’― what it is

torn drum
#

And then have the amount of bars below the icon dictate the magnitude of the effect

stark tide
#

The thing for me is that is just so crisp and obtrusive

torn drum
#

This is what BOTW does

stark tide
#

They are organic needs, so I lean that way in the aesthestics

#

Could you please post the progression image you posted in #showcase?

torn drum
stark tide
#

I got it

#

I just think that when you are on hour 200 with these icons, you will want something subtler

#

Also, a major theme here is that met needs display 0% icon

stark tide
#

I also wish to recognize that I have a huge mouse cursor, for my breed, at least

#

Guess I lost ya, @torn drum

the flame-bonfire transitions
Just a brain-seed at this point, a lot of fiddling I wouldn't do unless there is interest or I want it myself. I'd be curious to see your choice of tent icons, though.

stark tide
#

Onkija (creator of Colored Icons for Devilish Needs, using this mod now) and I are corresponding via Nexus, and they sent over their temperature icons with a request to include them as an option, and I will do it. Any feedback on their approach?

#

I had actually been considering duo-tone for fire and frost

#

To me, the snowflake is a bit busy for my needs, and the flame borderline

vague trench
#

something like that could be interesting like the way ice actualy grows in microscope

#

and yeah my tent was gonna be pretty similar

stark tide
#

I think the "folder options" update might need to include a left-handed turkey leg and beer πŸ˜†

vague trench
#

heres a better example of what i mean

stark tide
#

I think I would also use transparency to ease it into indication

vague trench
#

oh yeh this has the layers and transparency if you like that feel free to take and edit, i could probably do it a bit cleaner if nesecary, not sure whats required, or how it would look ingame

stark tide
#

Make me a fire one 😁

#

I will credit you and include it as an option

vague trench
#

lol yeah ill give it a go. no promise on the outcome though because fire is hard..

stark tide
#

There is also the consideration of how the icons will look at 64x64

#

^ This one looks pretty good IMO

vague trench
stark tide
#

I think that blue-toward-white and red-toward-red-and-yellow might be good for temperature icons

vague trench
#

whew! that was an intense rabbit hole. fire is indeed hardπŸ˜… . i think i came up with something that im actually happy with though. i might just have been staring at the pixels too long so feedback is welcome

stark tide
#

Aw, dude, you are too good for doing it!

#

On first glance, I think the sizes are not different enough, but with fading-in, the small one(s) won't pop too hard. This can probably be what I end up using for my own play

#

You surely topped my chops with this effort. Get ready to be a star in the credits of this icon replacer mod for a niche survival mod for a niche game engine πŸ˜‰

#

I think also that the massive contrast between fire and ice, specifically in the shapes and manners of indication-growth are fucking datchim

#

It is πŸ’― appropos that the smaller fire is redder, and the smaller snowflake is bluer ❀️ πŸ«‚ πŸŽ‰

#

I just wish we had "inflection" or "tangent" indicators to depict when indicators are rapidly rising or falling

#

I also appreciate the attention you paid to the relative visual coverage

#

It's all just super CHIM and I am so grateful

vague trench
#

haha sweet now we just need to wait for the cheques and groupies to start flooding in

#

no worries dude, im glad to be of help and ive been needing get the rust off with photoshop. its awesome that you dig it

stark tide
vague trench
#

you're too kind sejro

stark tide
#

its awesome that you dig it
If we are going to do something trivial, we certainly aren't going to half-ass it!!

vague trench
#

damn straight haha

stark tide
#

Build it for the future, and let the future generations wonder

stark tide
#

*you're

kind jetty
#

The scripts in this overwrite the latest update of devilish needs which removed the updateAll() btw

stark tide
#

Oh shit TY will fix

stark tide
#

Okay, yeah, so I dug out and dusted off my Alphasmart Neo, and stole a printer cable from the neighbor. So here is an update.

There will be folders with options, including community contributions, and updated to the non-updateAll scripts from newer Devilish Needs. This will happen after a real keyboard arrives.

spare kernel
# stark tide Oh shit TY will fix

I got a bug with your version, i.e. resting didn't lower tiredness. When I reverted to standard DD the problem didn't appear again. If it were only icons then that would have no effect but you also change scripts. Maybe there is an issue here.

stark tide
vague trench
#

Oh man I've been wrecking my head for two days trying to get the code working for Camping Gear.. I thought it was my fault the resting wasn't working..🀣 πŸ˜‚πŸ˜ πŸ˜…

stark tide
vague trench
stark tide
#

It makes DN read in the entire 64x64 icon, instead of just the top left quarter

#

It is necessary for "HD" icons

vague trench
#

Nah my icons are fine, I was trying to patch the mod Camping Gear to run smoothly with DN but my rest mechanics were bugged so I was going in circles lol it was just when Cybvep mentioned it I realized my mistake, no big deal

stark tide
#

I fixed the wrong problem, my bad

vague trench
#

All good, no worries. It's a relief to figure it out. Making progress again πŸ‘ŒπŸ˜ŽπŸ‘

stark tide
#

Version 2.0 beta (file removed, 2.0 is released)

  • tent color fix
  • new waxing Masser exhaustion icon (2 versions)
  • moon-and-star exhaustion icon updated to HD
  • new temperature icons contributed by Ojinka and Dubious
  • updated to latest (v1.5) Devilish Needs scripts to include ui.update fix
  • screenshots folder for preview images
#

If anyone is willing to give it a look-over or test it, I'd be grateful.

#

I note that I forgot the lefty victuals, will do that before release

stark tide
#

Lefty victuals are in

vague trench
#

congrats dude! im sorry to say i couldnt help but switch to Sun's Dusk so that could be why but its not working for me, i switched off all the devilish stuff and went and stood over lava, it was apearring and disapearing its probably dn conflicting rather than yours but idk. it looks good though! sorry not very helpfulπŸ˜… 🀷

stark tide
#

That's all good, I'm pretty sure it's good to go. Kinda hard to mess up even without testing every option

#

Looking at the velothi icons for SD, I am not too motivated to make my own icon set πŸ˜‰ daedric ones are sweet too

#

I haven't played for some time myself, but it will be with SD when I do again

vague trench
#

yeah its pretty smooth, maybe when they implement temp we can come back to it πŸ˜‚

stark tide
#

Oh, I will just use DN for temp still, with the other needs disabled

#

...so I am stoked to have your icons as an option for that

spare kernel
#

I'm on DD, def interested in those icons

stark tide
#

You have them above. That there beta is almost definitely the release

spare kernel
#

Will try these out

stark tide
#

The readme has info for how to modify DN scripts for 64x64 icons, or you can use the included scripts in 00 Core

spare kernel
#

Seems to be working in a quick dirty test πŸ‘πŸ»

stark tide
spare kernel
#

yeah, script changes probably did it

#

I will be keeping this one

stark tide
#

Noice, thank ya πŸ™‚

spare kernel
#

will give you a call if sth bad happens

#

but seems to be ok so far

stark tide
#

Love it buddy

spare kernel
#

don't want to change to SD mid-game tbh

#

DD is too big of a mod

#

will try SD next time

stark tide
#

I will honestly probably actually wait until SD is a little more cooked. I really like where it's going

spare kernel
#

yeah, there is time

stark tide

Would be a shame to make this and never use it haha

I use the "core" ones

#

everything working ok

stark tide
stark tide
stark tide
spare kernel
#

the only thing I noticed is that sometimes when the game is loading a cell or saving then the icon gets fully bright (no transparency). It is not a real issue, though. It's probably just some technical stuff.

stark tide
spare kernel
#

if we only had issues like that, it would be a perfect world πŸ˜„

stark tide
#

I hope it won't interfere with your enjoyment haha

spare kernel
stark tide
#

I hate it but someone has to do it

#

The background icons are quite um artistic or whatever. I just like to break up the grid a bit and have both shape and color to differentiate

stark tide
#

Seems that you are busy.
Ha! Those barter/equip/magic icons sat around for a month or so waiting for some attention to a few details before I just shipped them as-is because I wanted feedback. Pretty sure those are not for everyone, and probably not a permanent solution for me, either, but I liked where I was going with it, if I can say so myself πŸ˜‰
