Any chance of more expensive version? I have enough spell book mods now that I can replace the spell barter menu ingame 😅 Id prefer if they were closer to vanilla pricing. If your not bothered I'll probably figure it out myself soon, just haven't had a good look yet

hey, just reporting on my end this mod's causing plants in TR to switch to its picked graphic herbalism mesh when I change cells. if the plant's picked mesh happens to be empty, the plant disappears
no error logs that I can see

steps to repro on my end:

  • coc "Sadri Ancestral Tomb" (in mainland)
  • get out, walk up to comberry patch directly to the east
  • reenter tomb, then leave again
  • comberry bushes has its picked herbalism mesh, but could still be harvested

Ehhh, something along the lines of what I've mentioned, probably

  • Owned by an NPC -> biased toeards their highest or major/minor magic skills
  • MG/Telvanni faction-owned -> random
  • Temple/Cult -> biased towards their favored magic schools (destruction magic might not make much sense for them to have)
  • Vendor-owned -> random
  • Unowned -> random or biased to any non-hostile NPC in the cell if there are any

Yeah that’s in the update, I created spell tomes for those so that the player could relearn them if they were deleted but that can just be a quest/vampire check

There was also one interesting concept from Skyrim - learning spells from spell tomes takes time. There it doesn't really affect anything significantly, but with all current MW mods it might make it for an interesting feature 🧐

Yeah I’ll be hardcoding a list of the books that can be replaced by spell tomes and possibly limiting them to only replace books that the player has activated before, definitely will be excluding rare TR books and OAAB books

Just finished distributing the spell tomes to booksellers and magic-ish classes with lua, last thing before the update is creating an API for other modders to create spell tomes from their new custom spells

Although all the spell tomes are in an esp and have a line of code in each of the toddscripts that can be adjusted for an intelligence level requirement, it’s like 2 right now or something

It’s possible to create all the spell tomes in lua but I want other esp mods to be able to see them in case they want to add spell tomes as quest rewards or something

Makes a lot of sense, I guess toddscripts are ‘compile time’ only maybe? So any skill gating there would be hardcoded.

Can’t say I’ve made the effort yet to fully understand the ecosystem beyond some AI assisted hacking

Yeah, mwscript is very different from lua haha. It’s very limited in what it can do but a script like this serves its purpose. It’s also easy for other lua mods to detect them, so they can add features or exclude them like shelf control does I think 🧐

And yeah you would have to hardcode the skill requirements. You could come up with formulas if you wanted but that’s not something I want to touch in toddscript haha

In case it is interesting, this is my hacky patch.
IIRC it adds the skill gating to the esp records with fun flavour text, plus the 'rarity-based' spawning (though I can't say I ever really tested it).

Example 'lore text':
Skill gate (player->GetMysticism >= 25):
"There is a spell to be learned here, but you cannot decipher it. The arcane threads speak a language only partially decipherable to the untrained -- one would need at least a foot in the door of the Mysterium to begin."

Skill gate( player->GetDestruction >= 50):
"There is a spell to be learned here, but you cannot decipher it. The power here is that of a seasoned battle-mage -- one who has faced real opponents and come away with a deeper understanding of Destruction."

Skill gate(player->GetConjuration >= 75):
"There is a spell to be learned here, but you cannot decipher it. The Daedric forces encoded here would only answer to one whose name the lesser planes already know -- a mage of considerable standing in the conjuring arts."

I think there's one for each school/combo and each of the tiers: Novice -> Master

I quite enjoy the vagueness vs "Need Destruction 50 to learn".
Fits into that alien feeling of Morrowind

Okay, fixed all the bugs, added spelltomes for TR spells, hardcoded a list of books to replace (all are common, none are quest items), hardcoded list of the quest spells so they only have a 1% chance to spawn if the setting is enabled, gave spell tomes to booksellers, NPCs with a class somewhat related to magic have a chance to carry a spell tome, TR and OAAB classes are covered, and added an API for modders to register their own spell tomes that are distributed

Spell Tomes v2.0

Features

  • Booksellers now sell spell tomes alongside Enchanters
  • 50+ magic or magically-aligned classes from vanilla, TD, and OAAB have a chance (configurable) of carrying a spell tome
  • If you already know a spell, its corresponding spell tome will skip being distributed so that you won't get copies in the world of spells you already know
  • A separate spawn chance now exists for rare spells which by default do not spawn. These include Vampire Touch, Aryon's Cure Blight, Call Bear, Call Wolf, Passwall, and Radiant Shield.
  • Tamriel Data/Tamriel Rebuilt spells added. TR spells have a higher weight to them and have a higher chance of spawning than other spells. Be sure to grab Unofficial TR Spells if you haven't already, not required but highly recommended.

Interop

  • Unofficial TR Spells - Aside from giving the spells actual gameplay and an alternative way to learn the spells other than traveling from Narsis to Firewatch, if Insight spell effect is active you will find better spell tomes.
  • Utility Spells - Adds spell tomes to all spells from this mod
  • Merits of Service - Receive spell tomes as rewards from completing appropriate faction quests
  • Follower Detection Util - Companion behavior shifted to this mod
  • Inventory Extender - tooltips to show if a spell is known/unlearned

Fixes

  • No more quest books being replaced even if they don't have a script on them
  • Organic containers will no longer bug out with this mod installed
  • No more clipping and floating books

Modder API

  • If you want to create spell tomes for custom spells, you can register those with this mod's API which has both global and player registration
  • The ST_api.lua and ST_example.lua show the registration system and how to use it. Other mods can drop a .lua file under the scripts/SpellTomes/ VFS for both global and player access, or call I.SpellTomes.registerTome{} from your own player script. Each def can specify learn spell trigger, custom message and sound, draw weight, distribution flags, vendor skill/level requirements, an onLearned callback, and several other params.
  • The .esp included in this mod relies entirely on the existing mwscripts, so there's nothing in place to teach spells on the lua side. The new player script has teachSpellTome, fired on a UiModeChanged to 'Book' or 'Scroll', which adds the spell to the player, plays a configurable sound, and shows a configurable message. Books added by load or in an esp (and probably generated books, I just didn't test those) can work without attaching toddscripts to them. If you need learning a spell in a player script, this is what you'd want to use
  • Books can also teach on activation if using a global script. A registered tome can set learnTrigger = "activate", and the global script will teach the spell the moment the player activates the book in the world, though this will fire before the UI mode changes. Useful for tomes and spells if you don't want a player script.
  • If you need additional help feel free to ask or you can look at the Utility Spells update I'll upload later today

The textures can be overridden with vanilla textures if you want, the mesh is the same as m/Text_Octavo_08.nif/. Not sure if using the same textures as vanilla would be good though since it’d be impossible to distinguish them at a glance

Really nice mod! Would it be possible that with Inventory Extender installed tome tooltips would also show spell effects? For those of us who had not memorised all the spells by name yet.
