Interesting quirk I found! And yes, that is the red light failure background with an upright dwarf.
So, gunner can leave the drop pod after the game removes your controls with some shenanigans. Though I'm alive and was in the pod - playing in singleplayer has actually failed the mission for me, which I find both frustrating and hilarious.

Answer from GSG Mark:

Gunner isn't intended to have a color trim on the Dark Future armor. We don't think it fits him with a large part of him being neon green.
We can potentially try out giving him a dark, subtle green, but as it is this is not a bug.

but really i just kited while bosco mined the aquarq, i only used the m1000 for some normal grunts with charged shot to go through all of them, and to kill a few tri jaws/spitters
