you could try a total war game, the older ones are really cheap, so you can get a feel for the gameplay and to see if you like the concept before switching to a newer one with more polish

- they always run, 2d platforming game with an emphasis on momentum, but easily mastered
- gunpoint, puzzle-like infiltration 2d game
- steamworld dig, mining game with a little story and the kind of 2d "dig a hole game"
- Tactical Breach Wizard, puzzle game, with Spec Ops, but with magic guns. Really witty dialogues and fun story
