If i was born as an peasant i wanna have largest wooden maul, not tactics, no experience, just weigh of wood in my hands. Likely will die to most basic spear or arrow from range

Since blunt weapons are bad at blocking melee hits. People with good armor or an nice shield can wield an mace. Otherwise an humble sword is both your offense and defense combined in your one hand

Since swords can hold at one hand. You can pick whatever you want in your offhand to asist you aproaching or distracting your opponent, an dagger, buckler, spear, axe, anything could work including even claws. Enemy weapon block your sword? Punch their face or stab their weapon wielding arm with an claw

(I didn't meant to sound violent or graphic, in medieval ages everyone has an weapon called "fists", your hands. People do punch people while fighting in melee. Its an thing that happens)
