More simpler explanation: if you had an glove made of spikes on stick made of steel, you can just move the thing it clashes as if you grab by hand. And while doing so the other spikes will hit opponent arm or leg

to be fair, Hollywood kind of did Themberchaud dirty. while he is canonically a deeply unpleasant, and obese red dragon. He's not a complete idiot, and shouldn't have been that easy to trick.
Biggest fault in an otherwise good movie imo. they don't show that in D&D dragons are SMART. Neither Themberchaud or the black dragon in the flashback ever speak, so they just look like beasts.

Themberchaud btw is totally evil, but with a somewhat tragic backstory. His parents sold his egg to the Duergar (deep dwarves) for gold and he grew up as their prisoner, overfed to keep him quiet and forced to use his fire breath to power the deep dwarves' forges.
As a young dragon he had no choice but to accept this as he wasn't strong enough to fight them. He settled for biding his time, growing bigger and stronger over the years.
But by the time he got old enough and powerful enough to fight the Duergar he'd gotten so fat he couldn't fit through the entrance of the cave he was kept in!
