||I was listening to Sabaton, Primo Victoria, and as Joakim sings "D-DAY UPON US" it kinda occured to me, D-day was the largest from SEA invasion in history and it was what begun the liberation of western europe from the nazis.
Even if unintended by Oda, it connects. We will have a war between Pirates/Revs and WG/Marines, which when the Pirates win would begin the liberation of the One Piece world from the WG oppressive rule.||

It’s why caring monarchs get reinstated at the end of arcs and why Blackbeard is in the story to represent absolute anarchy. On one hand we have “one piece is not political” on another hand we have people thinking luffy is Blackbeard

like, the marines we as viewers usually see are often corrupt or similar, but we do know of several marines who are legitimately good people

many marines are propped up to us as viewers as antagonists solely because our protagonists are criminals

the marines as an organisation is fundementally a good organisation for the world of one piece, combating rampant piracy

most pirates in one piece are not as kind hearted as the straw hats, and will loot, kill, etc as they please

if the government is overthrown and the marines abolished, the entire world descends into madness from unchecked piracy as many individual nations likely dont have the manpower to save themselves

the revolutionary army doesnt have the manpower to replace the marines either

a better marine organisation would be one that isnt used as a tool by corrupt goverment officials to commit crimes as they currently are

There are plenty of films I like which have similar misogynist undertones, but it is necessary to be able to identify these and their corresponding critiques. Seeing the flaws in a work yet still loving it means that whatever strengths it holds can outweigh the critique

The main argument I would posit is that the series often relegates women to traditionally passive roles and reduces their autonomy. A majority of the main female characters have been placed in the position of victim in which a strong male is required to liberate them from their circumstance (Nami, Robin, Hancock, Bonney, any of the princess characters, etc.)

Oda explicitly writes One Piece for a young male audience. One Piece is the only old manga still in Jump (discounting HxH), and even for his time, Oda's themes and style were more antiquated. Issues like a lack of stronger female characters (in the sense of their ability to impact the battles) is more apparent among the current Jump lineup

technically speaking the symbol is not solely a nazi symbol, it was originally a religious symbol for divinity and peace in some older asian religions, and the one on whitebeard's old flag was in that original form
the nazi take on the symbol is rotated the opposite way, and well, we all know what that is used for

still, as the series debuted long after ww2 it was still a questionable choice of symbol to use

For Japan and certain other places it's a lot more acceptable given the religious significance. Pokemon had a swastika too on one of the cards they had to change for the US release

I had an indian boss and when they did zoom meetings they'd have wall scrolls behind them with the swastika. Would tell me all about what they did during the holidays cuz there'd be candles or other things surrounding it depending on the time of year

The ending to the east blue saga is underrated tbh
