Alright. So each tile is composed of four corners. These four corners track their level individually.
When you dig you are subtracting from these corners depending on where you're standing.
So in this case lets say you have an evenly flat tile. We'll say its a 0 plane.

When you dig in one of the corners it lowers only that corner.
-1 --- 0
| |
| |
0 --- 0
Now for rocks it is essentially forcing you to make the flat plane equal to whatever level the rock is jutting out at.
So you got to drop dirt to come up to the level of the rock.
I'm experimenting with mining out the rock to make a flat plane, but I haven't quite gotten to that with all this lock work I've been tasked to do.
Does that make sense?
Probably not. Game is weird. Sometimes its 2D, sometimes its 2.5D
I really do recommend reading the wiki on flattening, levelling, digging, and flatraising.

You can snipe from 20 tiles away with a long bow though.

the minimap mod shows the cave layer very nicely. It shows veins and all tunnels in the area so you can know if you're about to connect 2 tunnels.

question for miners. I have this awful mine setup right now that I don't know how to fix. I have a hole punched into the side of the mountain that - at the time - worked great; but, as I levelled the land it made the slope something tough to get to and sometimes hurts me when I leave.
When I try to tunnel or mine into the area just below my initial spot it tells me it'll either collapse the tunnel or that I don't have enough skill.
Do I just need to grind mining for a bit?

Fishing is one way. Crafted items also can be sold as their QL gets better, if the merchant is oyt of money you can make a trade run to the starter town and offload on those ones. Alchamy items also sell well... i try to keep the tier 4/5 and liquidate the rest
Not certain but think i saw a coin mold... so we may even be able to print money.

Also figured out what inspired while adding to large item crafting does. If the attempt doesnt fail it massively boosts the QL gain for that item attach. (Side by side slash piles with same materials. One got inspired and was almost 6QL better)

the exp is pretty good though, they set you up with farms, trees, mining, clay and sand (plus a fountain). so i've been catching up on mining and farming

well, the deed is paid up for 34 days so keep playing or not. I had fun, I enjoy wurm but it's not very enjoyable with no people to play along side with. I might migrate to Wurm Online someday and I'll invite you guys to join me if that happens

I might be talking right out of my ass here, but I feel like we might benefit from a little direction? When I hopped on at first and asked we needed to have done I was told to just do what I wanted, so I spent 3 days building a house because I didn't know what else to do. I just started pottery last night since I found out we apparently didn't have anyone doing that. Do we actually need pottery? I don't know. What do we actually need done? I have no idea. I can see how someone can loose interest quickly if they don't know what to do or feel like they don't have any direction to work towards

Things would have been massively different if there were any real threats, other players or survival or environment. I think we picked the PvP server in hope there would have been some sort of opposition, I think that's why it became a real "do what you want," fest.
Like, the only real gearing up, is what Springy mentioned. We would have needed one unfortunate soul to grind lock picking to get into more PvE content setup on this server.

update shot: Yes, I am being a mad man and solo up-keeping the town funds just so i can finish off the actual fortress concept (been enjoying it, oddly good therapeutic depression escapism watching it slowly all come to life)
double portcullis on the front gate, making guard towers in the corners of the wall perimeter. Bottom wall roughly.... 2/3 done overall now (including digging, leveling, paving, building)

I have since learned the secrets of how to mine surface level to flatten (not just level to flat, but corner by corner , one at a time painful method for OCD perfection)
it was clear all dirt to expose the corners as rock so the mine option appears XD
