How to do clothing cut outs?

vtuber artists I need your help 😭😭😭 I am trying to understand how vtuber clothing cutouts work, such as holes, or in this case a sock with a heart cutout! I want to draw the cutout in a way where only half of the heart hole is seen, but based on how the leg /rig moves the whole heart hole can be seen. I came up with a way where that can happen, but idk if this would work when it is rigged (thank you to anyone who helps❤️)

First is the example ref

1. I have a sock base the same color as the skin
2. I create a sock that is “unclipped” with the heart hole cutout
   3 & 4. I then “clip” the sock to the sock base, and based on how the leg moves will show less or more of the heart hole cutout! Is this the correct way to draw this? Thank you to anyone who helps!
