#Struggling to rig X angles of horns partially hidden by hair

The positive X angle (3rd angle) is the best example of my problem. At this angle the hair would be behind the horn from the view of the camera. I tried using draw order, but the change doesn't occur until the full movement is already complete, which looks really sudden and awkward 😓 I was thinking that I could try splitting the horns horizontally in order to more smoothly rig the shift, but I have no idea if I could get that to work. Any ideas? D:

additional note that the positive X angle isn't done, I just noted the issue and want to figure out the solution just in case it changes the way I need to rig that angle

So what I do for that (don't know if its the proper way) if i remember correctly is that I find a number between 0 and 30 where that transition in draw order should occur and make a key on the artmesh of the horn there and move .2 off (i actually type the value in the box) and make another key form. on the keyform closer to the end change the draw order up (499). Then as the head turns it should show the horn on top of the hair

I cant remember if the ends need to be keyed. I think they might need to be? I will have to check my file.

I'll have to give that a shot

Hey Kat, I'm not sure if you've already sorted this but another solution would be to use masks. I've made this example one red to more easily show the effect, ideally you'll use it at opacity 0.

You'll want the horn + a duplicate of the horn asset to use as your mask.
I've exaggerated the effect on this model, but I hope it shows it well enough for you. The bangs have an inverted mask for the Horn Mask

Like this

#

all assets are draw order 500 on this super quick test rig

#

Using this you can animate the mask to stop the popping in without needing extra cuts on the mesh

☝️ this method is probably less jank than what i mentioned

Your method is better if the bangs already have active clipping masks for things like dynamic lineart, so both work in a case by case basis

the horn asset copy you're using for masking, it's not morphing the same was as the actual horn, right? it's just being moved

just tried it and it works pretty well! I'm just worried about my face being at an angle where you can see one of the inbetweens
