The thing is, I'm gay, yes, that's why I love scamming people out of money. This MMORPG was never supposed to be released. The Steam launch is only needed to raise even more money before it shuts down. My husband and I want to go on a year-long vacation to the Maldives and indulge ourselves in every luxury.

Respectfully, with it trading hands to Private Equity and with Steven/core stepping away - the game has unfortunately sunsetted. It is likely, that after some very quiet time for things to blow over, they'll attempt to make money back on it and you'll see some form of it appear in the future - but without those core visions - it is not nor will be the game you originally were enthralled with.

You can easily get a horse from the starting town it has you go to, there’s some quests you can do that’ll lead to it and give you the mount once you finish the short quest line, can do it as soon as you start. The other options is to either raise one or buy one off the market

Eh, SWG imo doesn't belong on list of 'WoW Clone'. Technically, I'm pretty sure SWG even launched a few months prior to WoW's official launch.

WoW didn't actually do much that was new at the time, either. Anarchy Online, DAoC, Ultima Online, and variety of others all had lots of market-firsts that WoW duped. WoW won because of its marketing and accessibility.

There is one FACT. Steam locked sales of the game. There is going something really bad about this game. Call it scam or not. This wouldnt happend if something wasnt bad. U can all try to defend it but this is ONE BIG JOKE.

I am all for subscription based models, played WOW for about 12 years. However selling gold in game will go against a lot of players attitudes to playing an MMO. It is nice when everyone in game has to earn the gear they have. The game is an escape for a lot of people from the real world where money and power prevail, not necessarily gaming skills. If you really want to make a gold shop please make the cost so high that only the most affluent in society can afford. 100g for $1000 should limit it to a very small group IMO.

Steam will refund any customer base if the backlash is strong enough. They've got insane amounts of money, and refunding $2 Million is nothing to them if it means they won't be reputationally harmed (platforming a literal scam). There has to be no ''wrongdoing'' on that end, just enough backlash. I just got refund for $120 from buying Alpha 2 that I bought over a year ago. My credit card company is refunding me after opening fraud investigation and detailing situation.

This what I said to credit card company

“Reporting product as not delivered”

“As of February 1, 2026, it has been officially confirmed by major news outlets (Insider Gaming, PCGamesN) that Intrepid Studios has effectively collapsed. Founder Steven Sharif has resigned in protest, and mass layoffs have been issued under the WARN Act. The product I purchased is no longer functional as intended, development has ceased, and the studio is no longer able to support the game. This is a clear case of "abandonware" and an exit-scam occurring immediately after the Steam launch. Holding my funds for a product that has been permanently abandoned by its developers is a violation of fair consumer practices. The product has not been delivered, and will not be delivered due to the owner and senior staff resigning and the rest of the staff being mass laid off.”

If they ask if you have tried to reach out to company say yes once you called and they didn’t pick up which they won’t (their phone info is online ).

There is likely nobody left at the company to respond to these inquiries from the credit card companies and banks. This will become a default customer decision. Most likely if Intrepid tried to fight it they would lose that case but who is there to even try. It’s over

I worked at a company that dealt with these product not delivered inquiries from credit card companies and it was difficult for a company to win these cases against customer even when the company was 100% in the right. The credit card companies and banks want to side with customer as they are beholden to them not the companies their customers have disputes with. So use your customer rights!

Ok for people saying you can't get a refund on steam is a lie. If it gets declined just ask again explaining the situation. You just need to get to a human to ask for it. I have dozens of hours in the game and got it on steam when it first launched. I received my refund after 2 attempts though and about 4 messages back and forth.

In further digging discovered Steam has frozen most if not all funds of the game so they can give refunds out.

Sadly this also means Devs won't get paid as there is no money.

I am requesting a refund for Ashes of Creation due to extraordinary circumstances related to the sudden collapse of the developer, Intrepid Studios, as of February 1, 2026.

This is not a standard refund request based on gameplay preference or dissatisfaction, but a report of a broken promise and an effectively abandoned Early Access product.

Reason for this request:

Studio Closure
It has been widely reported that Intrepid Studios has ceased operations. Senior leadership has resigned, and the development team has been laid off, with WARN Act notices issued.

Abandoned Early Access Product
Ashes of Creation was sold as an Early Access title with the explicit promise of continued development and future delivery of core features. With the studio dissolving, development has permanently halted, and the advertised product will never be completed.

I got a full refund from Steam. Make sure you do the following:

In the steam app
-> Help
-> Support
-> select Ashes of Creation
-> Select View Reciept
-> Select "I have a question about this purchase"
-> Now you have a text box where an agent will manually look at.

Make sure to include the following subjects when you explain that ashes of creation is a broken product&promise:
"Broken product and Abandoned early access process"
"Studio closure" (include date),
"Abandoned Early access product"
"Loss of Product Viability"

.... also if you live in EU you can refer to the EU consumer protection law, that digital content that is not delivered as agreed, or that becomes non-functional due to discontinued development, is considered defective and should be eligible for refund.

Also make sure to mention that If this matter cannot be resolved through customer support, you will proceed through the EU Online Dispute Resolution platform.

Building a legacy on a deserted game that is being hacked (its all over reddit). Like even if half of what you said was true; dont you think the backlash and the huge amount of refunds currently processing kinda incidates the game is collapsing? I mean even if the controversy wasnt happening the game has countless bugs and so much of it was disproportionately accomodated; monster spawns, quests, etc. All of the mmo influencers have nothing good to say about it besides the graphics. To anyone asking about the staff that has been left unpaid: it’s worse than you think. Some staff and contractors haven’t been paid since before Christmas from what I’m finding out.

On the plus side, Alderon Games is apparently hiring any of them that reach out to them, and fast tracking the onboarding process to help get them paid and try to help them out in this situation. If you are ex-staff, or know someone who was, please let them know to reach out to Alderon-Games!

There is likely nobody left at the company to respond to these inquiries from the credit card companies and banks. This will become a default customer decision. Most likely if Intrepid tried to fight it they would lose that case but who is there to even try. It’s over

I worked at a company that dealt with these product not delivered inquiries from credit card companies and it was difficult for a company to win these cases against customer even when the company was 100% in the right. The credit card companies and banks want to side with customer as they are beholden to them not the companies their customers have disputes with. So use your customer rights!
