The board forced an early access launch, then told Steven in December to terminate 50 employees with no pay or PTO. Steven refused to comply. They argued for two weeks into January, after which the board forced him to terminate only 10 people and still refused to pay PTO. Steven is now paying that PTO out of his own pocket.

The board then voted to terminate 100 more employees and outsource a large portion of the game’s development to the Philippines. Steven again refused. He resigned in an attempt to force the board to reconsider.

After that, the board brought in a cutthroat CEO to replace him. In response, the rest of the leadership team resigned in solidarity. Instead of trying to save the project, the board then decided to terminate the entire team and hand the codebase to fully external teams at a lower cost, paying the original staff no wages or PTO.

Steven is preparing to file a major lawsuit against the board. The board consists of four people from a private equity group, not gamers.

The above information comes from an unverified source and cannot currently be confirmed. However, if it turns out to be true, then I think we owe @idle siren a serious apology for everything we directed at him. At worst, this would point to gross mismanagement, not necessarily malicious intent.

" I am requesting supervisor review of my refund denial for Ashes of Creation. I have submitted two refund requests that were auto-rejected due to playtime, but this situation is exceptional and does not fit standard refund policy parameters.

I have been a Steam customer since 10 years ago and own over 200 games on the platform. This is not a pattern of refund abuse - this is a legitimate exceptional circumstance.

Intrepid Studios issued WARN Act notices on February 1, 2026 stating inability to make payroll. The founder resigned, mass layoffs occurred February 2, 2026, and the game may shut down permanently at any time. The product I purchased - a functioning early access game with ongoing development - no longer exists and may become completely unplayable.

Multiple users are reporting that Steam HAS granted refunds for Ashes of Creation despite playtime over 2 hours, which demonstrates Steam recognizes this as an exceptional circumstance. However, my requests continue to be auto-rejected. I am requesting consistent application of the exception policy that is already being granted to other purchasers."

We dont deserve what we got only because we knew the risk of investing in a game in an Alpha. It wasn't about 'testing' the game for many of us. Its up to the developer to determine when they are ready to 'release'. You should be aware that some teams will be unable to 'finish' their game. So you should only buy an Early Access game if you are excited about playing it in its current state.

Control of the company shifted away from me, and the Board began directing actions that I could not ethically agree with or carry out. As a result, I chose to resign in protest rather than lend my name or authority to decisions I could not ethically support. Following my resignation, much of the senior leadership team resigned. Following those departures, the Board made the decision to issue WARN Act notices and proceed with a mass layoff.
