For the Steam purchasers, this is what I put as my rationale for the refund:

The studio behind Ashes of Creation, Intrepid Studios, will be closing and servers will be going offline. I paid for early access to a videogame that was slated for full release in the near future. It was advertised to me as a game that would continue to receive support and improvements until its full release. With the studio being closed and all employees being laid off, I will undoubtedly not receive the product that was advertised to me. Therefore, this is an instance of false advertising and I would kindly request a refund.

I am requesting a full refund for Ashes of Creation regardless of playtime. This project has effectively become a "pump and dump" scheme. One month after launching an "alpha" product on Steam and taking consumer money, the studio has reportedly laid off its entire staff, as confirmed by numerous employees on LinkedIn and internal Discord communications.

The developers sold this product under the guise of an active, long-term development cycle. Instead, they extracted capital from the community and immediately shuttered operations, leaving supporters with a dead, abandoned "alpha" that will never see completion. This is a textbook case of selling a product with no intention of fulfilling the roadmap.

Ok this is seriously disheartening. I bought the game in the alpha (for my wife and friends) and on steam at the EA launch too. I really wanted to believe in this project and bought every cosmetic to support the developers too.
Now the news have seriously impacted my mental health and wellbeing. Any way I can ask for a refund from steam? And what about the alpha keys that I bought? I heard people are trying to dispute the charge because they game never released. I mean we’re talking 1500 dollars here in total..

Basically in short, with official statements, Steven resigned from his position due to board's decisions that didn't align with his vision, and Mag as well all other lead quit, and the board fired everyone else.

There has been many EA games that got fully refunded that way. We just have to flood them with it. The automated refund system will not work. We have to write tickets manually, so a human sees them, and can report to higher ups.

His absolute biggest mistake was being quiet about needing funding. Rather then being open and honest and saying "look we need some capital, we're going to release on steam, which will also give us a chance to stress test better come and play if you want to support and test the game" instead he went and got backing from private equity firms who have 0 interest in games, just making money, these wankers then flipped the studio on its head.

Frustrating, i bought into the game because i liked the fact it wasn't backed by triple A game studios or private equity with 0 interest in games just making money.

However, it was up to me as an adult to take that risk. I only did it because i could afford too.

It was fun peeps, met some funny fuckers in here, and not so funny fuckers, but will miss you all to say the least. Peace out people ❤️

Steven founded Intrepid Studios in 2015 and for years claimed to be the sole owner with no board and no investors. State filings confirm he was CEO, Director, and Secretary. His words: "I am the sole share owner in the company. I don't have to answer to a board." Layoffs began. On January 31, Sharif resigned via Discord blaming "the board" for unethical decisions. WARN Act notices followed. The studio couldn't make payroll.

The answer is simple, Steven had no idea what it takes to make an MMO of this size and scope. He blew through a large portion of his money and ours and found himself needing to take loans or bring on investors. I honestly don’t get why steam bases refunds on “time played” when that time was counted in the launcher. At launch, hundreds of players were stuck there for 5–6 hours just waiting to get into the game, instantly hitting the 2-hour limit without actually playing. It’s absurd. The servers are going to be shut down anyway, so nobody will be able to play regardless and yet the game is still being sold on steam 🤣 . Make it make sense.

It wasnt a 'scam' I do think they intended for the game to launch, I think the 'scam' part comes from the release onto Steam, the fact developers weren't (as it seems) kept in the loop. I think where the scam started was with 'Steam launch' cause as it appears the writing was on the wall. A Cash Grab, Updates being pushed back, and what we know about certain laws regarding layoffs for California a lot of this was known going into the Steam Launch making Refunds very difficult ect., since Steams refund policy is harder then what intrepids was.

I've met Steven and you can tell he's a good guy and passionate about this game. Always a risk with investors. I'm glad he said something early to let us know and if these guys are so bad that Seven left makes sense to stir the pot.
