Players can build their characters with the active skills they want on their action bar (hotbar).
The maximum number of skills a player can have on their action bar will be around 15-20. Each archetype will have roughly 35-40 skills to choose from on average.

Yes, but the dungeons and raids in Ashes are approximately 80% open-world to 20% instanced. The instanced ones are focused on telling a story or delivering a narrative experience

Does Corruption have a timer like will it wear off after a set time?

Corruption cannot wear off on its own. It can only be removed by gaining EXP (small reduction) or by dying (significant reduction).
There's also PK count. The higher your PK count, the higher the Corruption score you will receive when killing the next non-combatant. This can be reduced by going some sort of questlines in the game. No details about that yet.
Also, remember that Corruption score scales according to the level disparity as well.

It's quite simple really. When you're making something, regardless of the product, you don't throw dates around that you're not sure you'll be able to meet. Every time you throw a date out and something comes up, there will be less and less people that will say "oh, that's fine don't worry about it."
MMOs are long term projects. They will give updates on dates when they are sure they can meet them. Considering the amount of transparency they're already giving and what has already been shown. I'd say there isn't as much need to be cautiously optimistic and you can just be optimistic.
Pretty sure this has all been said 1,000,000 times already so apologies to anyone who has already seen these frequenly asked questions but:||
- Those are visual in-game assets. They even describe the setting those assets will be used in. They are not just an outfit for you for purchase lol the are resources being made for use in the world. They can do that until the end of time and its just more things to find in the world...

No updates regarding Alpha-2 date since the last Alpha-1 test, yes.
No updates of the game itself, no. We get lots of big updates every month after Alpha-1 has finished. Important updates seem to be slowing down though, unfortunately. Steven did say we're getting two big updates in the next two months, so fingers crossed.

I feel im with tons of other people who have been patiently waiting for more news on the game. where they have been very good with updates, posts, etc. I feel a big majority of people are now starting to look at this as another Roberts industries. (start citizen).

They'll give one when they're ready. Alpha 2 is the biggest phase before launch. It's not something they can rush out before it's ready as it could literally kill the game

But we don't know what their minimum goal is for starting A2 since they haven't said anything recently
They might want 90% of systems ready before A2 starts so A2 doesn't end up running for 2 years before release, or they might do the opposite and start A2 as soon as they have the bare minimum

I don't believe there has been a video about that as of yet, but there have been forum threads on that topic, asking for players' opinions. The direction seems to be "yes, tanks in PvP will be valid, but it's not an easy thing to balance".
Any information about large POI spanning across multiple nodes being so large that they're reflected and shown within areas of the underrealm? seems like a really cool idea to me. Take for example the tower of Carphin. Given that it's meant to be a huge location and likely near one of the "Choke points" that act as entrance to the underrealm, will you be able to see these important places extend down into the underrealm? like a hidden basement section of the tower that is only accessible after you reach a certain level of growth within the nodes?
Because I was a tank in new world. It was usable but you had a hard time getting slotted. Because a mele dps could just do a better job.

Hey all, I haven't seen much out in the wild about AoC since the world boss tests so I wanted to check in. I see a dev stream will be Friday so good timing I guess lol. So with my intentional span of absence, I'm curious if anyone has addressed player population yet and how it affects progression?
That's been my personal point of contention ever since the siege example. Between node management, gathering & processing, exploration, and of course city/boss fights, it seems like the biggest crux for the game to function is minimum population. Obviously once things are WoW or Xiv numbers it clearly is a non-issue but it seems like if a city only has a few thousand citizens everyone's progress around that node would be a snails pace. Obviously from the dev's side you don't want the players to change the world too rapidly, so I get not wanting to churn out The Big Boat or a whole guild of top equipment soldiers in the matter of a day or a week.
More over I'm sure that dedicated full time players won't find any issue but how much could the 'few hours a week' player actually see get finished? Is there going to be a bonus for not logging in to make up the difference essentially? (And I do want to be clear, I'm not looking at paid skips. But something akin to xiv's rested xp bonus or in regard to boss drops like raid gear lockouts. Not that I think of AoC there should need to be lockouts, but as an example of catch-up mechanics.)
not a perfect answer, but to some of your concerns, there's population-based scaling at NPCs (https://ashesofcreation.wiki/NPCs#Population_based_scaling) as well as rested experience in taverns (https://ashesofcreation.wiki/Rested_experience)
also server merges are a thing, but I'm also curious about areas in a mildly populated server with a low population (some further towns/nodes) or world bosses/dungeons with a low level. think the answer to that is just that's ther tradeoff when choosing to go somewhere/do an event that isnt popular
Definitely; iirc it was said that each server's map is to be independent as well. Especially as developed nodes may differ, so should a merge occur I wonder how that might look. I'd imagine the 'fair' way would be a fresh map that everyone has x days to migrate to, but I'm sure that's a problem for another day. Though I wonder if that rested xp will be useful to professions in regard to the actual processing of things. Like if being higher level will make crafting lower level things faster and thereby keeping endgame stuff to the +8-hour/day players but quicker for providing routine necessities.
I guess in the same vein too is what a smaller group could get done. Clearly the idea is to make mega-guilds but most clans I see in any game tend to be either 10-20pop or 50-100 if it is especially large and not an 'invite everyone' type.
if you will go cleric and summoner as 2nd class is the summons are temporary or permanent

If u'r cleric on the main class and u choice summons but u don't like the gameplay u can swap the 2nd class with a quests maybe ( we don't have more info for that) but u can change the 2nd archetype

but i think if u want to have heal is more interessing to take cleric on the 2nd archetype
For me (and only for me), the cleric is the only healer of the game (maybe with the bard) but it remains the default heal class so take a heal class to transform it into a dps, as well as take a dps and play the cleric in 2nd to be able to heal
reason i am asking is mainly holy aesthetic to make holy champion with 2h sword heavy armor with possible summons etc ๐

Idk if u can summons with the cleric 1st class and summons 2nd but yes u can play u'r cleric with heavy armor and 2H sword
if u play necromancer ( cleric and summons ) u don't gonna have the same gameplay as a chaman ( cleric + summons )
The secondary archetype does not change your job in a party. The cleric will alwyas be a healer.
y for me if u want to have some summs and lifesteal being a cleric on the 2nd archetype is more interessing then the other side

idk for the voice but the interaction with NPC change with u'r race and maybe u'r action ๐

You can hire NPCs to take care of your Freeholds, stalls and so on. There will be mercenary NPCs as well. Not sure if there will be NPC companions that follows you on an adventure all the time though.
It's to save costs on things they don't need to run the game for now. They said it can be a thing for post launch depending on how well received the game is.
voice work is exceptionally expensive on any scale but one of the worst is MMOs. voices arent a priority for a sandbox mmo with a limited budget.

Well, they can lower costs by making voice over contest for players or wanna be voice actors to apply, this has happened on previous games. Of course that would still require an editor, someone to implement them and someone to evaluate those voice over file applications. Just a suggestion.
I'm sure that has been suggested before. But knowing Steven, he really loves immersion. If he's going to do it, he will want to do it properly. He's willing to spend money to have Bear McCreary compose the music for Ashes, so I'm sure he already have a plan for voice acting. Only that now is not the time yet.

Alpha Two will be a persistent test. You'll need Alpha Two access to log into Alpha Two servers. We'll continue to add content to that server, during the course of that test.
AFTER we launch, the plan is for Alpha Two servers to become our public test servers. We haven't shared specific information about what people will need to have access to the test servers, after the game launches.

I would love if they used a family naming system like BDO that way all your characters fall under a family name allowing you the ability have many popular first name options. My character name means alot to me when playing and it just feels bad when I cant have a certain name because someone got there first.

Any word on when this is going to be changed? The way Steven worded the test plan was confusion. I interpreted his statements to mean that spot testing would start late this year and be done by internal testers, then PI, then A1 players, then A2 players. Once spot testing of all the systems by all these players was done, there would be an official Alpha 2 launch in less than 2 years. It could be interpreted that all of this spot testing is part of the Alpha 2 phase, but the persistent Alpha 2 launch is a different thing.
Well, yes, the statement is still true but not as useful as it could be with a little bit of added info.
Otherwise, we'll have people manually answering the question every time with the added info.

Joining a guild is important. However the big question in regards to timing is when do you plan to play. If you have a Alpha 2 key it may be worth dabbling to speak with the communities... then actually play with them in alpha and beta to see if they are a good match for you at launch. If your goal is just to play at launch it would not benefit as much to join one immediately. Just my 2 cents

Could be worth taking into consideration that a certain population of players only have steam as a means of paying for games. For example children whose parents give them steam credit instead of a credit card, certain countries whose cards don't work well internationally etc.

It's OK if people loose interest. As stated by Steven before, the development process is not for everyone. They will all cone back and want to play once the game releases. Until then they can focus on different things. Improving the animations and the combat is not happening until they have a solid foundation of the basics and know exactly where they are going. And some of it is still subject to testing. After that it will be optimized. They are aware of everything and of course won't leave the combat as is. But I think it's too early to do what you are asking.

I would of paid the 75 bucks to play the game and test things out. However, if paying 75$ gets you just a beta test 1-2 times a year and the game gets released in 2-3 years, then it's not worth it imo.
Buying a package would not "get you a beta test 1-2 times a year" It would be part of that package that allows access to the beta testing. Which will come after Alpha 2. Alpha 2 from previous statements will be a longer test, that is meant to eventually be up 24/7 and persistent, of course all testing will be wiped before launch. The betas, from Intrepids previous statements will be much shorter affairs just before launch for final bug squishing and polish. If you are looking to "play" the game, a package purchase may not be for you.
Had a couple questions about the player flagging system and couldn't find an answer on the wiki.
What's stopping somebody from just hitting another player and waiting for them to retaliate so you can kill them?
Also, are there any negatives to being a combatant 24/7? Besides Corrupted player not gaining corruption from killing you?
I can easily see a scenario where you know your damage numbers and know the HP range of low level players. You can then camp resource gathering spots, wait for them to gather, then attack them and get them to low HP. If they don't want to lose as many resources they'll attack you back but by them attacking you they become a combatant and now you're free to kill them and remain a combatant. And if they don't attack you, they're gambling that you won't kill them. Then all you do is hide for 90 seconds and repeat.
Is there something preventing this strategy?

The short answer, is the corruption system, and people weighing the risk vs reward of different PvP flagging states like combatant is what will discourage some of the less awesome behavior you mention here. Players will likely have their own strategy for how to get best value from PvP situations, or how to avoid PvP situations (based on what kind of player they are)

Ashes plans like many other mmos to have level cap increases that will make previous gear obsolete. Gear suffers from decay and damage, needing specific resources related to the original crafting of that gear to repair. It is not just run to some npc and pay gold. You will need to keep a crafter with the relevant skills available, have the required mats, and of course, shiny, shiny gold.

I have a question about armor design. Ive always liked high fantasy armor. Moderately big plates, good sized shoulder pads. Nothing crazy, but something moderate. Something like the picture below.
So far, in the gameplay previews, I found gear design, very boring and simplistic. There has been games that kept a more realistic design, like Kingdom come: Deliverence, where armor still looked bulkier, natural and visually impacting.
Will AoC keep to the existing design, shown in videos? Or is there meant to happen something, to make them look more visually appealing? (Subjective of course)

While from now, I havenโt seen any unique features nor artistic works that stands out from other games already existing.

They've never said it would be the best MMORPG of all time. They've actively said Ashes is not for everyone. Not everyone will enjoy Ashes

Also one of the reasons it's taking so long is because when they started development in 2017 they had next to no employees. 15-20 employees in 2017 whereas for an MMO this size you'd easily need 200+. At the start of 2020 they only had 50. Now they're at around 150
Takes a long tiem to hire the staff needed, especially when Steven is so picky with hiring (said last stream that they had between 2500 - 3000 applicants since the start of the year and they only hired 7)
Thatโs also my point, they are extremely picky and want the best devs from the industry, but for now, the video footage doesnโt reveal the best looking game in art nor tech.
And if they are not even at half way from the final product they should be crystal clear and let the community know

Blizzard wasn't a nobody studio when it started WoWs dev, it already had lots of talent. Also games back then were way easier and quicker to make. Square Enix (SquareSoft at the time), released FF7, FF8, FF9, and FF10 all within 4 years (1997-2001) now it takes them double that time to release a single FF game.

Exactly, games were easier and quicker to make back then because expectations were lower. For example, when WoW released it only really had to compete with Everquest. New MMOs have to compete with WoW which has 19 years of content and FF14 which has 10+ years.

My understanding of it has been that they are fine with macros that do things like chat functionality and other simple text string things for emotes. Where you will get into trouble is if you try to macro skills or automate other functions from multiple press to single. How they plan to do their detection has not been revealed other than that they have a plan.
Interesting. In a way; this is how XIV does it. One can macro a DPS rotation to auto do skills for them but it's highly inefficient and leads to a massive dps loss so no one does.
but mostly we use it for chat macros
and/or crafting. but AoC will have mini games with crafting so crafting macros seems more difficult (but that's okay)

open world pvp outside of events like caravans have no system based rewards to not encourage players to grief
i beleive hou do get half of the gatherable resources, but the goal is to make open world pvp, where the person doesnt attack back, only really done in rare and emotional cases, doing it habbitually will be unsistainable
that and of course, various pvp events, and guilds your at war with wont have any detrament
will there be any sort of pvp cities you can always enter, no matter if corrupted or not? would highly enjoy a pirate island or something like that
Cities are not safe zones so you can PvP in them. That said I wouldn't expect cities to ever be safe for corrupted players as they are avoiding the corruption mechanic being encouraged.
Player to player trading, interacting with vendors or NPCs, and the ability to access storage is disabled for corrupted players.
so that would mean a no to pvp cities
yes but speaking about a pvp city, also to meet other pvp players for group "content" and stuff... the current version of the corruption system sounds a bit like, you kill players, call a friend to kill & loot you to reset the corruption and thats it

Has there been any discussion of whether they plan to do the monthly exclusive cosmetics all the way up until launch? I understand that it is what it is and that the cosmetics also populate the look of npcs and the world, but there're so many good ones that are staple aesthetics, it seems like by the time launch comes around they'll have used up all their good ideas with exclusive one offs! They haven't shared when/if they plan to stop the monthly cosmetics. Eventually there will be a proper cosmetic shop, that's pretty much all we know

Accounts will have name reservation tokens, that entitle its holder to reserve a name on a specific server when the reservation time comes.
how are you going to compete against free to play MMO`s like Blue Protocol and Throne and Liberty that will be great games?
Well think about it, an MMO has to make money. If it's Free to Play, how are they paying their devs? Throne and Liberty is said to have an "auto-battler", an "auto-pathing" system, and will likely have pay to win or pay to convenience. Blue Protocol will likely also have a pay to win / pay convenience thing about it. So the people who will enjoy those games and play them over Ashes, probably wouldn't like Ashes to begin with, because in Ashes you have to earn your rewards through hard work.

it is not a weapon players can use they will be used on ships and perhaps caravans
They have said that the potion launcher will NOT be a player weapon, but instead will most likely be a part of a naval weapon loadout.
Ships will utilize a larger form of potion launcher in place of canons.[5] These canons will be able to be equipped with different potions that have different effects.[6]

When duel weapons are used like sword/sword dagger/dagger with you get all the benifits from both weapons or will you have to mush them together to make a duel weapon. And if so will you have say 100 attk damage from both weapons applied to your stats or will the off hand go down some?
Dual wielding will be permitted for selected one handed weapons.
Dual weapons are treated as single items that when equipped will occupy both main and off-hand gear slots.
There is a limited selection of weapons that can be dual wielded.
Shields cannot be dual wielded.

I'm curious as to how mounted combat would work regarding flying/gliding mounts? I read on the wiki that there will be some abilities that are able to knock players off of mounts. Will this be included for flying mounts? Aka an AOE ability that will have a zone extending into the sky to knock players off of their mounts midair? or will it be only aimed/single target abilities that you have to hit in order to knock players off of these mounts?
I personally prefer the idea of using siege weaponry (such as ballista) to knock these players off during wars as i'm led to believe that they are only usable in certain PvP scenarios

Not quite. Flying mounts will be usable outside sieges, but they are very limited. Only a handful of people will have flying mounts at any given time on a server. Dragon flying mounts specifically will have large scale pvp abilities that are intended to be used in sieges.
Mounts are targetable just like a player, so any ability can hit a mount. Certain CC abilities will dismount the player

For reference, the mount system is based heavily on the mount system used in Archeage, so if you want an idea of how it'll likely feel I'd recommend looking up how it behaves in Archeage

there will only be about 20 flying mounts at any point per server and half of those are from world boss drops and the rest are from being leaders of metros and castles
I just find aerial combat via flying mounts to be an untapped goldmine when it comes to large battles. Could have some epic fantasy battles with two large guilds in a heavily developed server say an 8 flying mount guild vs a 12 flying mount guild, and how these actually play into the deciding factor of winning the war and their relevance in wars in general. Just scratching that theorycrafting itch! ๐

Thing is, they aren't just a late game item, they're limited to people who are mayors or leaders of guilds that control castles, as well as some lucky people who get them as limited time world boss drops that only last a month
Ahhh yes i forgot about the time limit on them.. would they be just as easy to obtain for a small guild as a large guild? and if mayors and leaders of castles also get them then wouldn't that make aerial combat between two castle owning guilds an inevitability?
it's likely each side of a siege would have 1 at least, just single guilds having 10 is unlikely
Right thats good to know, a 1v1 situation with aerial combat is just as interesting to me! A well placed gliding mount could even disrupt or knock off one of these flying mounts allowing your own to wreak havoc via the dragon ability. Thanks guys that cleared up alot
well its not a 100% that both sides will have it since first the node side would have to be a metro and the other side would have to own a time limited mount since you cant bring a a metro or castle flying mount into a siege

See this makes me even more adamant that ways to counter them via siege equipment is necessary, given that mounts have their own speed values making hitting them with an ability even more difficult than usual, which is where my AoE question came from hah! But to maintain balance i would say that having other options to counter them without owning one yourself would be crucial ๐

@night crater Every Class can use every weapon, but not every weapon will be the best option for every class.
That said, u could use swords (not samurai swords exactly) on ur Assa but that doesnt mean u could use ur full potential with these like u could with daggers f.e... and even if there isnt a samurai swords category, but usally since IS is going for a more realism style, this type of sword would be a 2-handed weapontype...

the mounts in the shop are skins that change over each month and won't be sold again. there will be similar mount and pet skins in the game, but not exactly the same

Freeholds yes they are specific, we don't know what building each one goes on yet.
Costumes no. Costumes override your entire appearance.
Accessories override a certain slot.

Freehold buildings that can be placed on a freehold plot serve three main purposes.
Homesteads.
Processing stations.
Workstations (Workshops/Crafting stations). Freehold buildings require blueprints and materials to construct.

To my knowledge you cannot enter the Alpha/Beta test for free, it requires the purchase of a pack containing a key located on the website's shop section! There are cosmetic packs also available with the keys and the Alpha 2 testing has not started yet so you cannot immediately enter the Alpha right now even if you purchase a key. If you want to know what went wrong, Steven simply knew nothing about game design and thought the game could be completed much quicker than actually possible.
He also thought he'd be able to hire staff much quicker seeing as he wanted 100 employees by the end of 2018 but didn't hit that until 2021.

The specific color variation of the cosmetic sold during the monthly cosmetic sale is unique. Recolors and reskins will be assets used in the game, some of which may be obtainable.

You do need to buy a package to get Alpha or Beta access but you cannot get it early. You will get it at the same time as everyone who have access.
Right now, there are no testing going on. It won't be until at least a couple of years in the future.
My suggestion is to wait until Alpha-2 really starts. You can decide then.
Alpha-2 won't have NDA so everyone will be streaming or showing the game to the public.
Not sure if they will stop selling keys before it launches or not, so do keep an eye out for any announcements regarding that if you're planning on waiting

How exactly does a node transition into its next stage when it levels up? Is there some form of animation? Does it just automatically turn?
I remember seeing a clip of a building being mid construction but I'm unsure if that was apart of the node leveling, does anyone have that clip?
That was just a construction animation as the structure was completed. Last info given was that node transition won't be "jarring" and that those who are in areas that would be in conflict with the node settlement "pop" would be teleported to a "safe area" outside the transition.

They're supposed to be the 3rd shortest race, only taller than the Dwarves, so it makes sense for them not to be tall

yo i gotta question, Lets say you buy a Voyager Plus Pre-Order Pack is the Cosmetic (Clothes in this case) an entire set or is it Parts, e.g I buy this months Voyager Plus Pre-Order set and i like the boots will i be able to Tmog the boots from this set with say the chest piece of another set
The voyager plus costumes are a whole set that cover the paper doll of your character. You'll be able to toggle off hoods and cloaks though.
Accessories from cosmetic packs (this month is a backpack) go into special accessories slots individually.
There is also a gear tmog system where you can transmog individual items to look like others. But doing this means you won't be able to use costumes. (as the costume covers everything on the doll)

How do you tell the difference between a T1 and T2 mount?
Tier1 is 'walking/running' only while Tier2 is '+ gliding'...so if it could glide (wings etc) it might be a Tier2 Mountskin
