I would say that it's the best proof of concept, perhaps outside of the super boomer stuff from before most our times (if only in their rudementary systems rather than gameplay). Certainly within the past like 15 years in mmo's anyways.

If I had to rate the quality of the product, I would say like... 4/10? Maybe 5/10? But the concept and everything about it was to be loved and was good enough to keep (some) people loving for it for a decade and to keep most players nostalgic about it for the same period of time, even if they stopped playing. The concept and it being basically the only good version of that concept to exist (at least within this and the previous decade) carries it.

But the fact that even a low quality product taking the route could be so loved, is in and of itself what shows how much potential there is for a successor

What is a sandbox title?

A sandbox title is a themepark without any of the rides that pretends that two specific themepark systems are enough to carry a game (Fighting for world bosses and doing sieges).

Effectively every feature of a sandbox exists within themeparks, the only real thing that themeparks are missing that they usually (but not always) lack the world boss pvp and sieges.

The only unique feature to sandboxes of the past 20 years has been archeage (and some other games like albion and now ashes) having trade runs in some capacity. Every other feature of a sandbox is just larping that having less is somehow having more and the end result being minimal pvp and dogshit pve.

But if you only have themepark systems, there are no fights that matter and most people will eventually want something more consequential / feel like something is missing.

I've lead a buncha planned Node Wars like that. We never had any set rules ahead of time in any of them. WE lsot one one time that we won EVERY SINGLE major engagement, by a land slide. WHy? Because the other side had people literally camping Embers and killing lowbies. That was before Emberspring protection was put in.

In planned wars, to be quite frank you gottta have a lowbie killing/defense squad in each Node ZOI. That is the Meta for the planned wars. Just the way it is.

Guy came back under the name Rokuthe but nothin they did mattered, no guild would take em and they quit a few days into a new character.
