I waited until today to share this because I wanted to be sure I was communicating from a place of clarity.

Intrepid Studios has shut down in a way that I did not expect. What I can share is what I experienced.

On January 28, toward the end of the workday, I was informed that we would be laying off 100 developers. I was devastated - these are hardworking people who were going to lose their jobs. Still, I believed it was something we could face together and find a path forward from.

On January 29, I shared this information confidentially with my Game Services team. I told them that changes were coming, that I did not yet know who would be affected, and that I wished I had more certainty to offer. I could not live with myself if I did not give them advance notice - these are people who deserve to be treated like human beings. By the end of that day, I received confirmation of which people on my team would be impacted.

On January 30, I spoke individually with each of my team members to let them know whether they were affected, so they could begin planning and preparing. Those who were staying began working on ways to move forward. Even those who knew they would be leaving offered their support - showing the grace, professionalism, and strength that defined our Game Services team.

On January 31, we were all informed via a confusing email that we would be laid off, along with a WARN notice. It is still shocking. The entire studio gathered to try to understand what had happened and what it meant for our future.

In the end, none of us are receiving our final paychecks, the 60 days notice and pay outlined under the WARN Act, PTO payouts, or other compensation owed.

What matters most to me now are the people - both the players and developers.

To the players: the entire development team was working extremely hard, pulling long hours, and wishes with all our hearts that we could give you Ashes of Creation. There are no words that fully express how sorry we are that this journey ended this way. You should pursue a refund, you deserve it.

To my colleagues: this team is truly a family. The culture we built together is something I have never experienced anywhere else. In the midst of heartbreak and uncertainty, we have come together to review resumes, help with portfolios, share job leads, and support one another emotionally. That says everything about who we are as people.

For hiring managers and recruiters: we will be hosting a job fair for former Intrepid Studios employees. These are extraordinary professionals who would be amazing assets to any team. If you are interested in participating, we would be deeply grateful if you would fill out the participation form, so that we can coordinate with you.

I wish I had better news. I wish our story had ended differently.

Alright fellas, It's finally time! After 6 months of saving up, I finally bought the game on Steam! I had to work a ton of overtime at my job as a dishwasher at Arby's and I had to go dry on baby formula for my daughter for the month, but thats neither here nor there. I made it into game finally! I'm just thankfun to Steven that he got us this far. What a guy. I cannot wait to see the game with my own two eyes. I have never wanted anything more in my entire life. If you have over two hours in the game and choose "I want to request a refund" when you make a ticket, you will get automatically denied. You have to choose "I'd like to ask a question" and then write, in as much detail as possible, why you are requesting a refund. That way an actual person will get in contact with you.

I got a refund this morning from steam support (via ticket system). I opened the request yesterday so it worked faster than expected. I have to say that i only had 34 Minutes playtime, however i purchased the game in december so more than 14 days ago.

There won't be a refund I imagine since the game technically "launched".. Even if it was the worst launch for an Alpha 2 ever... Couldnt even keep the team alive past the steam release for a month. A lot of people were expecting something great to come of this... a lot of people poured their heart and soul into this game only for the decisions of a few to break it all down. Hopefully the IP can be given to someone who can hold the mantle and bring the game the life it deserves

He said ''the company is fine, we're launching on Steam to open up to more testers'' while in reality they were out of money and needed Steam sales to make payroll. That by definition is selling something under false pretenses and thus, a scam.

Intrepid has no money left, they have 14 creditors waiting in line to pick their bones, there was a board of directors since November last year, and Steam has frozen all funds that Intrepid was meant to receive since there's a 60 day escrow on sales made.

Because his whole salespitch relied on Ashes being a passion project, and Steven had one massive ego that probably kept him from telling the truth. I saw some data miner that highlighted the use of blueprints. There is essentially 0 reason to use any types of blueprints for logic if you are developing a serious game that is supposed to be maintainable. So I think they might have built themselves into a corner

This is not a standard refund request based on gameplay preference of dissatisfaction, but a report of a broken promise and an effectively abandoned Early Access Product.

Reason for this request:

Studio closure
It has been widely reported that Intrepid Studios has ceased operations. Senior leadership has resigned, and the development team has been laid off, with WARN Act notices issued.

Abandoned Early Access Product.
Ashes of Creation was sold as an Early Access title with the explicit promise of continued development and future delivery of core features. With the studio dissolving, development has permanently halted , and the advertised product will never be completed.

Loss of Product Viability

Without an active development team, the game's servers are expected to shut down or become non-functional, rendering the product completely unplayable.

I respectfully ask Valve to treat this case similarly to previous precedents, such as "The Day Before" Where refunds were issued due to the studio closure and false or unfulfilled advertising shortly after release.

Given these circumstances, I request a manual review of this purchase, as the product is now effectively defunct and no longer deliverable as sold.

Hello, just wanted to mention that I asked steam in a manual ticket ( Not the automatic refund tickets ) for a refund, they refunded me in full after 40 hours of playtime. I purchased the game in december.

This was their response and yes I did request them to refund to my wallet since I was planning on purchasing other games:

Resigning "in protest" when confronted by financial reality isn't a heroic act.

yall all wouldnt still be here if you werent here for:

  • the sliver of hope that they just say "hey were gonna make AOC still"
    which you're still gonna end up playing cause you did like the game. You might not support Stevens decisions but that doesn't mean you won't play the game if by miracle they choose to continue on.

OR

  • The drama of it, wanna be in the know of what will happen.

I just don't think continually hating on the game nor Steven will really do anything else atp. Everyones gonna have different opinions on how this all went down. Arguing with someone who feels differently about it won't magically bring the game back. Plus Stevens already been bashed all over the internet. Get it out of your system and move on to other games.

PS: do your best to get a refund if you can. It won't make up for all the wrong doings done by the company but you can spend that cash on other more long term games. 🫶

I got my money back too! So I have a theory. I think all the people whose purchase was after steam gave the devs the last check are getting refunds since steam still has the money. They aren t gonna refund out of their own pocket . If there s anyone who got a refund on the game and bought it in december , you can correct me .

In finality , I kindly appeal to Valve s commitment to fair treatment of customers in cases like abandoned or non viable Early Access titles. I issued a refund and was denied within 50 minutes but someone from this Discord told me to send a support ticket asking a question about my purchase and mention that I wish to get refund given the situation and in 24hrs Steam gave me my refund

Theres no shot Steam is going to insert themselves in between intrepid and their creditors. Thats a legal nightmare on its face, and it would destroy their reputation for any game dev. "Sell your product with us and well try to fuck you over by preventing your ability to pay back your creditors if your EA game fails even though all our customers know the risk of EA games" (double entendre pun intended)

If you bought this from Intrepid and NOT steam: Put in a ticket at the intrepid website demanding a refund, make sure you specifically reference this statement about refunds. Follow up with it after 2 days requesting an immediate response. Wait a week and call Visa/Mastercard and ask them to issue a chargeback.

Say specifically that Intrepid failed to deliver your products (cosmetics, 1 month game time, 15 dollars store credit, etc) and that it was fraud. Tell them you attempted to resolve this with them and they refused to respond. Offer to submit your correspondence attempting to resolve the issue that they refused to respond to. Explain that today (2/1/26) was the first day that it became clear that their acts were fraudulent. This sets the 120 day chargeback window to start from today instead of when you made the purchase.

This is by no means certain, but it's probably everyone's best bet.

People saying just give up and move on and go to one of the current mmo. Lets look at them. Everyone of them you need to buy the game and all expansions and some a monthly fee. For the people that is trying to get a refund. You need to place the request through the " I have a question about this purchase" option that you will find at the "help" lid. Explain the issue in detail, and you will be refunded 100% no matter the amount of hours invested in the game. Don't do it conventionally since in that case it is a bot which revises your request. That's why you are being automatically rejected. The other option sends you to a human assistant.

Sadly, I think development for this game is taking way too long and yeah, maybe another company buying it isn’t gonna be the worst thing in the world. The game already needed to implement monetization and because they’re bleeding out money. If you truly wanted to support the game, you should be OK with a subscription even during an alpha versus paying a box price. It’s not like you can’t cancel subscription at any time. Or at least a cash shop that has some decent cosmetics maybe even a holiday themed pack etc.

Because there’s a six hour timer, I’m just gonna type it here. I just mean this game has been met with so much hatred towards the monetization of anything in it. People had an issue with spending $40 on it but yet wanted the game to succeed? I don’t know it seems like people want everything for free, but aren’t giving the company any options to make the money back. Like I literally saw people complaining about an alpha having a cash shop.

OK while I understand Steven said that the game was funded to completion. They’ve also been spending about 3.4 million per month on this game. Like all the cost and everything. If at some point, he just came to you guys and was like hey guys actually I can’t fund this game completely would that be so wrong? It’s a major game. It’s not something small though. I do wish that they had just gave us the south didn’t give us a North, no sea content and then released it as expansions. Because it probably would’ve been more cost-efficient. I would still want to support a game if I knew the creator of it was not able to do what was originally promised because you can hate the creator, but you risk losing the game by not supporting it. So he can be a liar all he wants it just comes down to if you truly want the game finished or not.

With this level of feature creep you're going to inevitably run out of money. IF a new company buys the IP, the first thing they'll do is cut back on that feature list which will essentially mean they'll develop a game that isn't the one people paid for. Why jump back on a hypetrain that just ran over you and spat in your face after kicking you in the nuts when you can get behind a different IP/project?

I'll do the same. I think your perspective is definitely valid but that's all it is, a perspective. Many people grew up paying for a game, and it's finished and ready. Nowadays (and for years now) companies are taking on less and less risk. You're the consumer, you pay for development, we're not gonna bother finishing our game if you don't raise the capital. That's why many people don't like ''early access'' titles which are currently really just companies asking you to pay to be their QA team. On top of that, Steven constantly said he self funded the project to completion. To then ask money on top of that is going to be a decisive move, to not finish the game at all despite that promise + all the player funding, is borderline marketing fraud.

In a perfect world, sure. But in reality, you can't say ''So he can be a liar all he wants it just comes down to if you truly want the game finished or not.'' because he did lie about something major which blindsided everyone and that trust won't be regained. If he miraculously came out on top in all this and somehow rights the ship in terms of continueing development with his vision, then they still wouldn't get the funding. Because people wouldn't trust him to continue correctly this time, especially not with money. No money, no game. And I know that's what you're getting at, just keep supporting if you truly want the game, but you can't expect people to be that irrational with their finances en masse to make it plausible.

I just have to say; wow! Ashes of Creation has seriously come such a long way. From those early alpha days where we were all hyped about the node system and caravans, to now seeing how much polish has gone into the archetypes, the economy tweaks, crafting overhauls, and all the world-building that's making Verra feel truly alive. It's been amazing watching the team iterate and deliver on so many of those big ambitious promises over the years. I'm genuinely excited for everything still ahead: deeper naval combat, more dynamic events, the next phases of node sieges, beta milestones, and just getting to experience the full vision we've all been dreaming about since the Kickstarter. @gritty elk I don't know if you'll respond but I would like to at least understand where the board came from. My understanding is that the only "board" was you and your husband. If you could at least provide some clarity that with regards to this board that pushed the WARN to you.. where did they come from when you were not taking on investors and it was just you and your partner.

Forget all the hate, I am just confused as I was excited to finally see an old school MMO with modern technology brought to life.
