So what happened. Sharif mismanaged the company to the ground, with a crippling debt he transferred his private assets (his house) and sold interpid to Karen bayenko which he refers as "the board" in his last statement.
The statement is mostly PR damage that is half truth half lies. There was never any board up until recently when bayenko took over. He made bunch of debts and ran away pretty much.
All this information is publicly available online if you know how to look it up

Biggest red flag is what someone just pointed out.. Steven Sharif was involved in a major pyramid scheme business before starting Ashes of Creation. Much like Jeromy Walsh and his scammy business practices prior to start Chronicles of Elyria, I think this game is gonna go down the drain. At least Steven is a cocky, arrogant guy that is super overly confident in the game. Jeromy Walsh on the other hand was always so quiet and reserved with CoE and he barely gave us any information on the game at all.

Sharif: Marketing genius but still a cocky, arrogant douche that probably won't succeed.
Walsh: Scumbag liar that intentionally paid himself and his family well while firing all but 1 employee right before Christmas 2020

It's rather amusing, really. People panicking because their endless money sink is flopping and going "how do i get a refund for my 15k$ I gave them in good faith!".

I already got death threats in #questions for saying the game hasn't shut down officially and Steam won't be happily refunding everyone just because several high profiles stepped down.

Meanwhile I'm here like... bro I bought in for 40€ and spent a good 40h, so I'm satisfied.

Also since I left the server like a week after the Steam release, I came back and something's broken because I can't post in alpha channels. Does anyone know what you have to do to verify again as a player? tried re-linking discord to game account but it says my password is incorrect and I don't want to break the launcher login by changing it because I'm pretty sure it's the correct password.

The game is doomed, while yes investors with money can easily replace lower tier workers they cannot so easily replace the creative director and senior developers. If they do its gonna be a disaster whatever art direction, styles theme and design,as well as gameplay will be changed drastcially. The original idea and concept is gonna be ruined or torn apart because the suits wont care about gameplay they'll care about money so they'll start catering to the casuals and Majority pve crowd who never wanted open world hardcore PvP full loot systems in the game, expect MTX out the ass and p2w system implementations and the game to go full f2p with alot of scummy and shitty systems that will be devoid if anything that peolle who invested or played the alpha wanted originally. The thing that sickens me is the pve crowd trying to be smug and use this as a point saying "see pvp focused games dont work look how ashes died!" But the game fell apart not because of pvp not being able to retain a player base but because of poor management decisions. Steven didnt pay attenion either he lost control of his project supposedly because someone invested more money into his project and bought the company via buying more stocks making it so they owned the company more and became in charge of the decisions. I see alot of people screaming scam and rugpull because they only see two guys on the board and the names havent been changed yet, however that js not how being on a board or business works there are very likely outside influences and companies who were investing money into the idea and making financial decisions. I sincerely its just a rugscam because it took 10+ years of development and a bunch of other people working.

The Steam launch is only needed to raise even more money before it shuts down. My husband and I want to go on a year-long vacation to the Maldives and indulge ourselves in every luxury.

As you can see, the situation is very complicated. I'm glad you spent all your money. Of course, Steam won't give you any refunds. I feel very sorry for you, I apologize.

The news about the board of directors was true. My husband (the second director of this company besides me) really wanted to take a vacation, so I had to quit.

To be real, the biggest scam was that 250 people were employed by Intrepid. That's not a boot strap indie studio, that is an attempt to be AAA without any revenue except expectant fans.

250 employees in California is likely a minimum of $500k a month in payroll

This project should have been 10 dudes in a basement. They likely made $2mil from Steam sales, which would be WAY more then enough to fund an Indie size studio another 2 or 3 years

It took me 4 months to be able to buy AoC. I worked overtime and paid my rent early just to afford the box price. It took a lot of extra hours and had to skimp on my daughters baby formula a little, but im finally in game! Well boys it was fun while it lasted I had 799 hours in but the game is now dead in the water and every other mmorpg out right now is boring trash we all know it. For whatever reason we are in 2026 and no one can give us a decent lasting mmo.

I see many people asking “where we all going now?”. Currently in OBT for a short time Free to play & download [ Shaiya Arnesta ] Google search it I can’t post link. But it’s a modified private server based off the original “Shaiya” launched in 2006 and basically dropped off in 2012 and moved to private servers mostly. I spent many years playing this amazing game and it always shocks me how few people have heard of it.

Largely focused on a faction based light vs dark 4 race 6 class hundreds of skills to learn and lvling stat/skill point system while also using 4 elements each countering each other.
Solo / party of 7 or single raid of 30. Form guilds within factions and create personal guild houses. Awesome mounts and many different maps to explore unlike fully open world.

Intense pvp & pve over borderlands/dungeons and boss hunts. Mob & quest lvling system from lv1-lv60. There is an item mall shop where you can donate and buy certain items and it may appear at first a pay2win but everything in game is droppable and farmable easily in comparison to what we just did in AoC lol. A drawback I admit is there is no “gathering/processing” system like in AoC but instead armor has various stats and slots to link lapis into and increase stats in a very customizable way.

Although I have no skin in the game since I’m not paid or have anything to do with the Adm/dev team I just wanted to bring awareness of this awesome game to a disenfranchised group of people wanting an awesome mmo to play.

Worst case you wasted an hour or 2 of your time giving it a try or maybe it’ll be the most fun game you’ve tried in a long time.
So come check it out while it’s in OBT a wipe is in a week anyway.

Steam will investigate and once that's done they'll issue refunds, it's been two days, don't expect steam to jump to conclusions. if they find that the game is truly dead they'll start refunding, thankfully steven has linked himself personally to the project with his own money, so corporate veil won't protect him if it was actually a scam.

first off , for anyone wondering , a normal refund request is honna get auto denied if you re over the 2 hour threshold. So the best way of going about it is opening an actual support ticket by going to “Purchases > Ashes of Creation> I have a question”. Then write in as much detail the game is a scam etc etc , some ppl had success with this. So far all i ve gotten back was “ We are investigating this issue” which to me tells me steam is trying to come to a decision as they have some special rules concerning early access titles. If they deny that , escalate untill they give you your momey back. With that money buy Elder scrolls online .

  2. Find someone to take over the development (which from rumours, sounds like what they wanted to do anyway)

All we can do in the meantime is report the Steam page so sales stop happening. But, the only truth is that whatever happens - it will never be the Ashes of Creation you wanted to play since the heart (the team) is gone.

Guys I have some really close inside information, on Feb 5th there will be a hearing, I have been told that steven and karen are trying to work out what to do with this situation as they did not expect such a high turnover rate once steven resigned in protest. His resignation isnt the end but could mark the beginning into this whole thing to push yhe investors out, all the payroll money for the employees has been froze so they are working out a plan to get that unstuck at the moment. I was informed that steven is putting his 5.5 million dollar house up as collateral to try to buy his company back and push investors out. It is said that the hearings could take awhile to go through meanwhile he is exploring every avenue to get his company back. This was never a money grab. This is just a prime example of what happens when you jump in a shark tank with a bunch of weasels they first push you out of your business and the. Take it over from the i side out. What the board inherited was a bunch of wasted space on a hard drive, they cant even break it down and try sell it. If steven gets the company back you can expect some big changes are made and they will no longer try to bring in shadow investers. 99% of this entire post is false and I have no idea what im talking about bit it sounded good.

They entered into early access under bad faith, false pretenses. This is in violation of Valve’s terms. Everyone that purchased on Steam should be eligible for a refund. No way you launch an MMORPG in EA on a major platform like that and then tank in less than 60 days in a manner like this without some serious lying going on behind the scenes. Steam will refund any customer base if the backlash is strong enough. They've got insane amounts of money, and refunding $2 Million is nothing to them if it means they won't be reputationally harmed (platforming a literal scam). There has to be no ''wrongdoing'' on that end, just enough backlash. However the people saying that the steam release happened to ''legally nullify'' the full refund promise in Kickstarter are braindead. The Kickstarter refund ''promise'' is a good faith promise, not legally binding. They released on Steam as a final cashgrab, not to cover their legal basis. If you donated on Kickstarter or their website, that money is gone and there will be no class action lawsuit to reverse those donations. Take the L and move on.
