Had this information been known or disclosed at the time of sale, I would not have purchased the game. The product no longer reflects the expectations set at launch regarding continued development and support.

He cut corners, hired the cheapest devs he could find, and the money just “disappeared”.

Recently Steven hid his home behind an LLC, likely several other assets. On paper the “big bad board” is literally just him and his husband.

I am requesting a full refund for Ashes of Creation regardless of playtime. This project has effectively become a "pump and dump" scheme. One month after launching an "alpha" product on Steam and taking consumer money, the studio has reportedly laid off its entire staff, as confirmed by numerous employees on LinkedIn and internal Discord communications.

The developers sold this product under the guise of an active, long-term development cycle. Instead, they extracted capital from the community and immediately shuttered operations, leaving supporters with a dead, abandoned "alpha" that will never see completion. This is a textbook case of selling a product with no intention of fulfilling the roadmap.

I expect Steam to protect its customers from this exit scam and issue a full refund to my original payment method.

This is all within the last few hours I doubt anyone has gotten anything back as this is also a weekend and their office is likely closed. This will likely take a few days to get an answer on. That said I already requested mine. I only paid 40 dollars so no big loss... wasn't going to pay more cause I was personally leery because the permanent development/early access model is skeevy as hell. 85% of the time there's never a final product.

I hope that this kills this whole concept. It won't, but I can hope.

Try contacting support first, but as soon as it's official that the game will no longer be developed, which I strongly believe will happen, Steam players will receive a 100% refund.

100 devs x 100k salary = 10 milion a year
10M * 9 years of developmnet = 90 milion
Lets say, some of it was preproduction with less people. So 65 % of devs worked on it on average
=> 58,5 milion just on dev time. Lets say 60 M with server costs, PCs, technologies, office lease, furniture. And i am probably being generous here

Steam peak is 27,8k players. Lets assume 100k copies sold with an average price of 100$ = 10 million

That would put the game at loss of 50 million. Even if you double the sales, it still bled money

Steven's been saying this whole time that he's the sole owner and decision maker of the company. State filings show him as CEO, director and secretary He is the board.

Steven ran the company into the ground financially. He took on debt from Karen Boreyko (his MLM connection). He couldn't pay it back. She exercised her security interest and took control and now Steven frames it as "the board made unethical decisions I couldn't support" to make himself look like the noble protester rather than the guy who lost his own company to a creditor. He sold his house to his spouse in November for asset protection because he knew creditors were coming and he didn't want to lose the house.

Edit 1: Their "Fix" was to flood the cavern so you couldnt stay at the chest without drowning, but if you had a water mount that negated their "fix"
Edit 2: You also got gold and territory rep for each "opening" of the chest, which came out to around 60g per hour
Edit 3: Theres also multiple locations of the chest, it used to show as "Mimic" on websites maps
Edit 4: all you had to do was block you inbound/outbound packets and then spam open the chest.
Edit 5: To all the ppl asking "where chest" learn to read you buffoons

I think the term scam is being thrown around rather liberally. That implies that this was the intention all along. I don't believe it was. It also implies that someone is walking away with money, which they aren't.

This whole situation came about because the studio wasn't able to meet its financial obligations. That is why they went to steam at this point. I suspect "The Board" was pushing for more heavy pay-to-win things as well. Steven ethically disagreed with this since he has been promising the whole time to not be pay-to-win and stepped away. Other team leadership believed this and Steven's vision and followed, crippling the games ability to continue.

While I am disappointed in the situation. I understand it wasn't a scam. I understand I gave money to an ambitious dream and that dream has seemingly failed (at least for the time being). It was a risk we all took by participating at this early stage of development, failure was always a possibility; nothing is ever guaranteed.

If they will proceed on the 2nd of February with the full layoff, it means that the warn act have been issued at least 60 days ago. Which mean prior to the Steam release. Therefore he was well aware of the situation
And yes you can technically pay the 60 days compensation to the employees so to avoid the 60 day notice and proceed with the layoff . BUT you still have to file the WARN act to the EDD prior to 60 days. If you don't you can be legally charged by the state

Literally just bought this game yesterday morning and now I’m hearing this. Steam rejected my refund and I put in another request basically stating that if they don’t refund me I will report it to my bank as fraud. You can’t continue selling a game that is not going to be playable within two months.
