Every update, every additional feature creates opportunity for code to talk to each other and break. that's why it gets tested so heavily, with each little change their is an opportunity for things to break. so testing before no matter how stringent can mean nothing entirely. in this case everything prior to steam release was tested through the launcher. adding steam alone could cause the issues.
