An easy one to make is about the possible futures. The "Sharif" MMO is dead as a door nail. IF whatever is left and whoever owns the IP chooses to continue developing the game (or recycle the IP for another project) what will come out is not "our" AoC. It will be something designed to extract the maximum return from it, likely some f2p monstrosity.

I may be out of place here but I DO think someone should be giving us some sort of response, regardless of having employees or not. Where did the passion from developers go? How about customs and courtesy’s? This is not a big ask, it’s just simply the thing that should morally be done.

We are testers of a game under development. Not that we’re on a payroll but we, as a community, have provided insight and data to help mold the game into what we see today regardless of how long we’ve have played. I’ve played for 2 years now and I have seen the improvements over this span of time. I know there’s wounds about how long the game has been developing, but regardless, there’s been change.

I think there may be some truths to all perspectives on what is or is not happening but we don’t know, and frankly…. we probably don’t need to know. Now, what I think we all rightly should know is if this game will truly die or if we can loosely count on this game to be around whether it be now, a few months from now, or in a year or so. Some of us have never played an MMORPG, some of us have never tested games before, some of us have built in this game what other games may not have had the capability of. This is a bad taste in mouths to these newer folks, and Ashes was, in my opinion, one of those games that had me glued (and I haven’t been this glued to a game in a long while) since I’ve started.

I just want some news, I don’t care if it’s good, bad or indifferent news. Am I the only one? Hell, it could even be as simple as “we’re still planning on 2/13 live update but instead of it being about the game, it’s going to be about the state of the company with a new host ____”

Gw2 all the way. A game that actually respects your time and effort. It’s f2p and the expansions are half the price of wow. Best mount system on any MMO. No p2w only cosmetics and convenience. A plethora of things to do from open world, pvp, raids, fractals and my personal favourite - World vs World. 3 servers fighting over keeps and towers to take control across 3 maps. And with the horizontal progression your gear will never be outdated so you can come and go as you please. Anyone who hasn’t given it a chance definitely should

Archeage Classic. Google it, download it. Free. Its what Steven played that inspired Ashes when the public servers shutdown. Its a private server and discord now with thousands of active players. High populated server. U can mix 3 diff classes, run crates with caravans or ships. Fast travel zeppelin from a few city to city, player housing, unique skins, no pay to win. All open pvp. Except starter zones. 3 entire continents. Sailable Ocean in-between. Its a rolled back version of the original ArcheAge before it went pay to win and eventually shut down. Its basically what Ashes was working towards being a newer version

Why would I want a refund. The game is still running and the chances are it will continue to keep running under new leadership and a new dev team. There are no other games quite like AOC out there. I am happy I invested in purchasing the game on Steam because I have had my money's worth a hundred times over. The game is far superior to all the other MMOS out there and It's a huge shame Steven had to leave the project like this after what, like 10 years of none stop hard work and investing his own hard earned cash in creating an MMO masterpiece that will surely live on. CK3 and CK2 1000+ hours each, Hell Let Loose 2000+ hours, Squad 500 hours. I can also go and play all of these games whenever I want. Ashes of Creation I played for 25 hours at more than 10x the cost of some of those games and it's about to be taken down completely.

This purchase directly from ashes website that links to steam stated if you buy now, you are buying not just alpha and beta keys, but the final official game and 1 month of subscription after launch. People did not just buy an alpha test. It was a whole package. If they can’t deliver what was bought, easy refund. Thats why steam is refunding people but the auto-refund method doesn’t work as it just auto scans if more than 2hrs of playtime and auto-denies. Have to contact manually for now until steam allows auto-refunds like they did for The Day Before when that went live and then shutdown in 5 weeks.

Steven kept spending all his savings, tens of millions developing until he was broke. Then he took loans out until he was broke again. The 3.2 mil from kickstart was nothing compared to the $200+ mil this entire development has costed so far. He fell behind and also had $850k in unpaid servers. He kept trying but kept getting more behind as the devs were taking too long to finish year after year. He did not understand how to streamline dev process properly since he did not have developer experience. But he tried to make his dream a reality.

Then he had to sell shares of the game over and over to keep it afloat, and eventually an equity firm took control because the debts. Once he lost majority ownership, they pulled a fast one on him, saying it will move to asia and be a pay to win eastern mmo trash game and they are firing everyone in Americas or they can resign, and him and his team resigned because thats not the vision he had. This equity firm also forced steam release against his wishes when he knew it was not ready and would get steam bombed.

The info is out there. Dude lost all his life savings trying to get it done for us. Now in debt and lost his dream.

The game technology and assets now owned by this firm and they will either keep the name, rebrand, or sell it to another dev company to do what they want with the foundation built.

This is a very tragic story of a man with a dream, putting his entire soul and savings into starting a business and the business failing right before it was finally done and ready to thrive.

Migrating over to UE5 was a horrible decision. They shouldve kept the game in UE4 to at least get it released. You can go back and look at the pictured and videos of A1. That's a private server. You can still go play actual Lineage 2. All well and good on you. This was marketed as an actual game, an actual product/experience that will persist and be developed, and many millions of eager customer's dollars were harvested for a 2 month not even half-baked Alpha release on Steam (can't purchase the game anymore due to what's going on). We're all very happy you had such a wonderful experience as a mod and "you learned a lot", but I waited patiently after Voyager + Adventurer supporting for 5 years, helping with tests when I could justify the time, and have the complete opposite takeaway as you. I only played 25 hours of the Steam release.

Id like to share my experience with Ashes of Creation and why I was so looking forward to the game.

I bought into the Alpha around a year ago and prior to having been heavily watching the development of it.

I played a bard because that was the most interesting class for me at the time. (Was looking forward to the Summoner class)

I leveled my bard to around 10 and this was when they had just added the tropics zone.

I went exploring up there (way under leveled mind you) but I wanted to see what the zone had to offer.

During my trip up there along the coast line a boat rolled up on me with a team of about 5 to 6 max level folks.

Rogue killed me with one shot.

But their cleric rezed me, apologized for the rogue and they proceeded to allow me to hop on their ship and gave me a 2 hour site seeing trip around the tropics. Protected me, the whole shebang.

At the end of it they gave me a mount and gold and sent me on my way.

That was the game I was looking forward to. Big wow player and never have I expected something like that in an MMO that is why this is such a crushing blow.

It's not about the money. It's about what could have been.

Founder initial backer here. Just wanted to say while things ended like a total train wreck the journey here has been worth it in my opinion. I backed a project with the hope that what was dreamt up by like minded gamers could be realized. The project I backed has failed. I will hope for another to take its place one day though after 9 years of following this one I don't think there's much hope in the genre for new. Even if Ashes gets picked up by a new studio it will not be what we backed. It will be chasing investor returns. Lots of awesome people here in this community and I will miss them. Quinfall is weapon based roles like New World and has a lot of systems similar to ashes (except they have some more substance when it comes to fishing, taming, and animal husbandry). Combat is functional, but could use some work. PVP exists and you can bounce between PVE and PVP servers. PVP would benefit from a higher population count.

I don't disagree with those facts. However, the money recouped by Steam release was probably less than $7m. The cost of development is probably closer to $100m. The only route to solvency was by launching the game and then downsizing and riding on subscription fees. A rug pull makes no financial sense. That's why the other secret investors wanted to outsource the remaining development. I don't think anyone wanted this outcome, including Steven and his secret investors. It's the worst possible outcome for EVERYONE. To claim this is some mastermind scam I feel is therefore inaccurate because it benefits nobody. 52 days later. FIFTY TWO DAYS. Steven Sharif resigned "in protest" and abandoned the game. Senior leadership GONE. Mass layoffs. DEAD. He got his Kickstarter millions. He got 250,000+ copies sold at $49.99 each. Then he LEFT. The most insane part? California filings show the "Board of Directors" he blamed was just him and his husband. HE BLAMED HIMSELF. By definition, the game has not been released. A test client was released. A test client, is not considered "the game."
Many features promised on kickstarter's packages were not delivered, as such, the product released, was not complete either.
