I purchased this as Early Access to help test and develop the game. The purchase included Beta 1 & 2 access and one month of game time after release, which is now not possible. I am not seeing a lot of hate toward devs, mostly Steven's bad decisions that led to others taking some control .

How can we bash a 'board of karens' when we do not even have the details on what is actually taking place? Steven had an LLC, not a corporation filing so he did not need to list a board and the only officers listed was him and John ,and he is the only Director listed.

However, we know that Steven was doing some stuff behind the scenes with promissory notes/loans that were converting into shares and even tweaks of these contracts over the years that later resulted in common shares being converted to preferred shares for some of these entities like yaya.

If you want to know who was likely taking some of that control Steven mentioned, you will need to look for those that Steven provided these contracts/loans/promissory notes to, especially those that resulted in shares of the company.

The only real entities we are aware of was Yaya (going way back 9 years), Robert Dawson, and the more recent secured party listing for Karen Boreyko that was just added on Jan 14.

At this point given the sequence of events, either Karen Boreyko has been backing Steven financially behind the scenes and saw the shit getting ready to hit the fan and stepped forward to file as a secured party to protect her financial interest, or maybe, just maybe, this is a move on Steven’s part where he is attempting to work with someone he trusts (like previous employer connection and friend) to quickly get them listed as a secured party to try and supersede Yaya’s claims/actions/control.

I have no idea how many shares Yaya now owns (was a little under 10% last reliable filing I saw) or how many Karen Boreyko might have or who else might be involved. Yaya filed as a secured party years ago but their current status was showing as expired the other day. It is likely they still have protection, but perhaps this was a legal play with Karen Boreyko to try to supersede Yaya’s expired secured party status which is an entity that appears to have been a thorn in Steven’s side for close to a decade including a lawsuit (settled) demanding access to Steven’s books/records.

i think steven funded it a long time when it was small, but scaling up to finish and launch ended up being too long and he took money to fund it. it ended up not being enough, and ended up selling more and more equity until they got enough power to force him to downsize and outsource, likely change game fundamentals too to be a bigger blue bob market they could monetize gaajin style and make some money - thats what investors want. they arent gamers. they dont care about a niche community. at the end of the day the shareholders elect the board - once they have enough equity they can fire steven, replace him, do whatever they want. the board is beholden to shareholders. if he was unwilling to change his dream baby, he could either quit or be fired.

Just my honest take on everything—and yeah, I know hindsight makes this easier to say—but if they never moved to UE5, we probably would’ve had some form of early access years ago.

They could’ve launched earlier, sold cosmetics/skins, leaned into a subscription model, added freeholds, expanded ship content, and let the game support itself through cosmetics and live service content. That steady income could’ve kept things moving.

I also think they could’ve delayed the UE5 move, launched on what they had, and then transitioned to UE5 later on as a major update or even tied it to an expansion. I’m pretty sure most people would’ve understood something like: “Hey, we can’t add certain features right now, but we’ll do our best—and if we can’t, we’ll be upfront about it.”

I get that game development isn’t simple, and I’m not pretending it is. But a few things still feel clear:
the move to UE5 caused major delays, and they weren’t transparent about running low on money. Those decisions had real consequences, and we’re seeing the fallout now.

10 years, on average $2M/month in wages (lower at start, but $4M/month over the last few years). That's on the order of ~$200M just in staff costs, never mind everything else (offices, utilities, software, servers etc...).

A project of this size does not simply collapse from one day to another. Clearly there have been financial issues for a while now, and clearly there appears to be a difference between the true state of the project and what was communicated to us, the real investors in the project. It seems no effort was made to arrange for an orderly exit or perhaps for a way to continue it in some other manner. Some people joined recently, on the back of steam. I'd say to them it feels like a scam.

Some people joined back at the start, that first video they showed, an amazing game potentially - seen Steven's passion. You don't run a 9 year scam, pump it full of your own money then cut and run. I'd wager he's in pieces right now, as much of the leadership team is.

I hope they find some way of moving forward. I hope that they manage to return control of the project to themselves.

For the good of MMO's I hope this sees resolution in a positive way. I couldn't care less about the money I spent - I've drank/ordered takeout and made poor life choices and got a tiny fraction of the pleasure than I did from Ashes.
