Wurm Online. For people that want a game to play with their partner its a good option. Has plenty of non-combat options like building, crafting, horse/animal breeding. Also has world combat events (goblin camps, rifts, world bosses). Entire servers for pvp with no corruption system, fight anyone anywhere and full loot. Its slow paced and shows its age at times but still top tier sandbox mmo in my opinion.

Unfortunately, the gaming industry has degraded into session-based games where any idiot can succeed thanks to endless catch-up mechanics and artificial buffs, while truly smart, cunning, resourceful, and skillful players are not rewarded in any meaningful way.

Ashes of Creation gave me hope that a game truly made for adults could finally be created — a game where your actual skills are rewarded, not just the amount of time you spend logged in.

Of course, the modern business model is about selling as cheaply as possible to as many players as possible, but that has nothing to do with quality. That’s the logic of low-effort mobile games.

I firmly believe that quality should be paid for. Quality is not for the majority — it is for the best.

Full release was 2 years out still. This isn't about him just giving up.. this was 100% a finance issue with an investor calling in their debt and Intrepid unable to pay it. Paying the debt would force mass layoffs... the investor pursued it which turned everything upside down immediately. The whole project gone... this is why I hate non-gamers being involved as investors in games. It is like Sony back in the day with StarWars Galaxies.... massively popular game (arguably one of the best all time).. .ruined almost over night by a group of people that didn't understand the players. Too many potentially great games have been ruined by Greed of those that don't even understand the gaming industry. They are just investing to get more money.

Anyone who's clowning on this event today, or saying "they knew it all along" or something to that effect is doing so with the benefit of hindsight. There may have been signs looking back, but there wasn't any way of telling for sure before this happened. Yes people bought access to an alpha, I'm pretty sure just about anyone who paid for this understood that and viewed the money as expendable for that purpose. If you didn't, well, sucks I guess.

It's not about getting a refund, it's about collective action against whoever is responsible for the lie, as this breach is one that is clearly against the WARN act, along with one that happened with no form of communication until it had already happened. That is the wrong that must be righted, not to get a payout or to "revive the game" because both of those realities are far and away from being possible, the purpose is to set an example of whoever is responsible. Not only to punish that party, but also to deter any future projects, developers, companies, etc from behaving in this manner again. Sure it will happen at some point, you can't fix that, but you still ought to do what is right for the customer--as if whoever is responsible for this can get away from it cleanly whilst violating these codes and agreements--it does the opposite to show that other people can get away with it...and so then it would happen more.

With the current direction the game industry is going, I'd really prefer that second alternative to not reoccur several times before people wisen up to what is the right course of action.

I'm struggling to believe this tale about this imaginary board to be honest. I see the articles of association for the board at incorporation, and it's made up of two officers and one director. Steven and John are both listed as officers, and Steven is listed as the sole board of directors (those that actually make the important decisions that affect a company).

However, CA corporate law typically mandates that you have a minimum of three BOD's, though there is an exception to that if the equity is not diluted so far; i.e, a sole equity holder can thus remain a sole board of director, which (on paper) appears to be the case with Intrepid Studios.

So unless there's some Jekyll and Hyde nonsense at play, either the statement in discord is a lie, or the articles of association and reportings to the state of California is a lie.

It's not a board. Steven remains (still) the only board of director. What has changed according to Kira is the shareholder.

Why that doesn't fit in with Steven's earlier statement about his protest: he was implying that the "board" wanted him to do something different, but he is the board. Now the new shareholder could certainly want him to do something different, and if he didn't want to do it he could have just refused, and then the shareholder would have to arrange a vote to remove him and put in someone else.
But this whole story about protesting over something he is currently in control of doesn't make sense.

Really I think Steven has just cashed in and dropped out, and is using this protest story as a means to back out of it all while he finishes off sorting out the last arrangements (such as removing himself from board of director so he fully cuts ties with the company and its legal responsibilities) - and that's probably the "public filing" he was referring to earlier in his cryptic messages.

I have felt so bad for the Intrepid team since the launch of Alpha 2. People have been calling their hard work a scam and so much worse. People have whined and screamed that the team wasn't responsive enough. They weren't fixing it the right way or the way they envisioned. Youtubers make video after doomer video farming for clicks and views.
One of the biggest mistakes imo was what could've been AoC biggest strength. Being an open development game while also building it's community. Having to constantly hear a loud minority basically tear their creativity, passion, dedication and labor apart everyday. Many of whom never understood the difference between constructive criticism and performative negativity. How horrible to put the process out their only to be met with such vitriol daily. Most games you see some concept art, maybe a video and then years later maybe a demo video with little actual news of anything that's happening. But, we got to be a part of their process. With monthly livestreams, chatting in discord, doing interviews with creators to eventually getting to be hands on in a developing world with them. Very different from the industry standard.
Many said Ashes would never release. They're right it seems. Now that so many of the dev team who spent hours putting their time and creativity into something that'll never be. Are you proud of the videos you made? Things you've said? I hope that bitterness and lack of hope never finds me. I've watched games I hoped for be canceled, reworked or released as something different. SWTOR, Wildstar and others only to watch them have a rough launch, slowly die. I still had hope and I still will in games. Because it's okay to believe in people's dreams. It takes hours to plan & build a beautiful sandcastle. It takes no time to kick it down without a second of thought. Whatever we learn about this mess. I had fun in Verra. I'll mourn the loss of potential. Ok so the board of directors does exist, but its different setup than normal which is why its hard to find the info,

steven was apparently selling shares to keep the game development afloat, and eventually he lost majority as steven was basically voted out of decisions,

then they sold the company to private equity firm, said they were going to move the company overseas for cheaper labor, downsizing the team from around 250 usa workers to a smaller overseas team to finish the game due to the high cost issues.

They also forced the steam release to start making money against stevens wishes as he knew it was not ready

Steven then resigned and his team resigned because he did not agree with sending the project overseas for cheap labor and to make it another eastern pay to win mmo

In the end, this project financially ruined steven after he put his life savings and his own tens of millions into it.

The kickstarter 3.2 mil is NOTHING compared to what when in. In total after all years of development, salaries, etc, the project spent $200+ million dollars with Loans etc

Steven put his entire life into this dream of his. And he was so close. I feel for him and the workers. Very sad.

Steven, margaret, etc quit....so the equity owners said ok fine...everyone's fired. So, odd's are they can probably get the game coded quicker and cheaper over seas at this point if they sell it off somewhere. @tawdry shore also watch Kira's video, there has been a board for quite some time now, Kira said that will come out, so....the rest of the board is still around at this point as people know at this point. Even in a very unfinished state so many of us were really enjoying Ashes. We could see the vision and direction, and we trusted in that and everything we were led to believe over the years.

On top of losing the game we made so many friends and memories in, it really sucks that we likely will never see the huge potential of the game come to fruition. Secondary archetypes, content, polish.. so many things we were looking forward to and it felt like the foundations were finally reaching a good point and out of nowhere now it has all just been ripped away.

Regardless of the things we don't yet know about this situation, from what we have seen, it does feel like the players have really been betrayed, on many different levels. And it's only fair people have so many questions and feel the way that they do. As much as many of us have followed you and trusted in you and tried to be positive throughout the years, it's almost impossible to do that now.

When did this "board" even come into play and why was the community not notified of things changing in this way considering we were always led to believe you had full control which was one of the main attractors for this game for people who were sick of corporate greed killing other MMOs? This has completely blindsided everyone.

What of the screenshots that if real paint a fairly clear picture of favoritism, that we were told so many times did not exist like we were crazy? To the extend of "aiding RMT"?

All in all it really is just so saddening that something that genuinely had so much potential and passion behind it has just crumbled into nothing so fast and the players and devs who were so passionate and optimistic have just been left in the dust, or you could say left in the ashes. I honestly feel like the communication could have been handled better. In past dev talks they said they’d work on it, and for a while it did improve—but then it slipped back into long stretches of silence. That kind of stop-and-start transparency makes it really hard to trust Intrepid Studios, even if the intent isn’t bad.

Hindsight is 20/20, but I truly think if they had been more upfront about the “board,” what was at stake, and any financial pressure behind the scenes, a lot of the community would’ve been more understanding. Instead, it feels like we’re left piecing things together after the fact—and that’s frustrating.

I also can’t stop thinking about it. I’ve been replaying it in my head all day, watching YouTubers break everything down, and trying to process what it all means. That "garbage" as you call it gets updated every week or so with new content, balance etc and is the inspiration for almost every single MMO out there. Just cause it doesnt have the fancy colors and grind slop garbage to keep you entertained doesnt mean its garbage, graphics arent everyones taste sure but the Outlands people have done outstanding work art wise. Thousands of customizations for players with hundreds of hues and then even more house customizations, dozen or more dungeons with multiple levels and crazy good progression systems. Plus loot pools are awesome, better than farming glint all day or doing crates all day. And pvp is its own kinda cool too.

There are a LOT of really dumb people in this discord. no one has any real information aside from what was given to us by the devs and mods. BUT even a half braincelled POLAR loser could have deduced that things werent as smooth sailing as what we thought. what with the EA on steam being bulldozed into the plan and then the 9 layoffs, and then the Dev stream pushback with no reasoning (they have never done that in all the 6+ years ive been following them) it was clear that something was up and there was some sort of trouble.

• The entire Dev team has stepped down or is stepping down/being let go within the next 60 days
• Steven and Maggie have already stepped down.
• Steven was on the board of his company.

Apparently another party (Vemma) who bought part of Intrepid's debt saw that Intrepid was failing to pay off it's loans that Steven had put against t he company, and exercised their right to take over the IP and everything else, thus becoming the board.

I think a lot of people here don't have all the information and are quick to run to conclusions. We'll see / hear something soonish. There's alot of conflicting information about the "board" comment. From what it does seem is that he was pushed out. If it ends up being being shady af, then throw the shade. But still, we've all been having a good time playing the game and its sad to see it go.
