• Somehow, despite claiming 100k+ testers have bought access, their servers could only ever support 3-6k each
• Added cosmetics to a game that isn't released and missing major features/having barebones systems for crafting, artisan professions, freeholds etc...how could that ever be a reasonable priority. And claiming that players had been asking for their skins..like bruh
• Released on Steam when it was clearly not ready for EA, then had queues that negated 2h refund policy
• Throughout all this, they continued telling us that "Steven was carrying the load of the funding on his shoulders" and had invested 60m along with his husband John (Margaret literally said this like 2 livestreams ago), that there were no publishers or investors or anyone to answer to..which is obviously straight up lies

He funded a team to sell cosmetic packages on an empty promise of a game taht was never going to come out.

It was never profitable and it never would have been because its scope was gigantic.

He has blamed the board despite saying that theres "no board or corporate overlords" in order to try to garner support from the gaming community who was sick of it. He knew there was a vulnerability of desperate MMO players who wanted an MMO to finally come out.

When the funds started running out he launched on Steam for "more testers." But that was to get a little bit more money and launch yet another COSMETIC shop.

Ashes launched on Steam in order to not have to pay back kick starter donations because its an "actual launch".

He has all the signs of a gigantic scam artist. Steven should be blacklisted from the gaming community. He should be sued in to oblivion by anyone who bought the kick starter in a class action law suit.

It is sad to see what is happening to Interpid Studios and all the developers that have spent so many years working on this game! In the end, Interpid is still a company, and for companies to do business they need to be profitable and have enough funding to pay all the employees. I am surprised they lasted this long with 250 employees! The steam sales would only have netted 1.5-2.5 Million. With an average salary of 80k, 250 employees would cost $20,000 a year. Steam sales were not even enough to cover paychecks for 1 month.

   Courts often recognize that a creditor with a golden share or veto rights can exert “actual control” over key decisions (e.g., bankruptcy), even with <50% ownership.

3. Golden Share or Veto Rights?

Legal documents suggest Ya-Ya may have had special contractual rights (e.g., veto over major decisions). These aren’t voting rights per se, but contractual controls that can override normal governance.
4. "Control" Doesn’t Mean Full Ownership

A controlling minority shareholder (or creditor) can dominate specific decisions—like asset sales or bankruptcy—without owning 51%.

Damn, what a way to return from a vacation.
This is a real kick in the gut, talk about kicking a downed dog and then beating it. 5 years of play testing for this game, 10 years of supporting them, all gone. I understand that due to operational costs, I am unlikely to ever see any of my money back. I understood that when I bought from the website. I do hope that Kickstart follows through on the promised refunds, but I won't hold my breath.
This was sudden to alot of us, myself included so as much as the 'doomers', and 'i told you so' peeps will say, no i did not see the so called writing on the wall, I did not see the skeletons in the closet, or any other signs, this was one of the first games where I had deep testing and not just the surface or semi glossy build bug funds.

Steven founded Intrepid Studios in 2015 and for years claimed to be the sole owner with no board and no investors. State filings confirm he was CEO, Director, and Secretary. The 2017 Kickstarter raised $3.27M from nearly a 20k backers with an explicit promise: "In the case that Ashes of Creation does NOT launch, we promise to refund all backers in full." Despite claiming full funding, lawsuits piled up. Sada Systems sued for $850k in unpaid cloud fees. Aetna filed a debt collection suit. Streamline Media sued over unpaid battle royale assets. California EDD filed ~$50k in payroll tax liens starting in 2020. The Ya-Ya Legacy Trust, a 9.7% shareholder, sued in 2024 after being denied access to financial books and bank statements. Sharif's other entity, Trek Holdings LLC, was suspended by the state.

In November 2025, Sharif transferred his home to his spouse — asset protection before creditors arrived. On December 11, Intrepid rushed an unfinished Alpha 2 onto Steam Early Access, technically "launching" the game and voiding the Kickstarter refund promise. I started playing ($100 alpha key) 10 days before Phase 2.5. I was on Lyneth i believe, whichever the NA server was, and those 10 days were some of my favorite gaming ive had in the last few years. Had other favorites but I really enjoyed Phase 2.0 towards the end.

Grinding gave levels AND gear drops(multiples), there was enough 'room' where fighting for spots only rly happened at peak hours and even then most ppl were cordial.
This allowed levling 'quickly' and still being able to explore and keep up with the gear curve.

Then 2.5 came, they dropped the econ changed and i uninstalled never to play again. To the point of not linking my intrepid and steam accounts.

Its a shame that the vision for this game was close to appealing, but was far too old school to be successful. You cant take the bad from failures and implement it expecting it to not be bad.
